When I first started playing jazz from lead sheets I got confused by all the different symbols I saw next to the chord names. Triangles, dashes, circles and more!
Here are some common chord symbols you’ll find on lead sheets:
Lead Sheet Chord Symbols
Chord with just a 7 Dominant 7th
Chord with a circle with a line through it HalfDiminished
C79, C711, C7913
Chord with alt
Chord with numbers larger than 7 Dominant chord with natural extensions C9, C11, C13
Chord with numbers smaller than 7 Major chord with extra notes C6, C2, C4
Chord with a forward slash Slash chord D/C, Bb/F
Many of these symbols mean the same thing. Its up to the composer or engraver to determine which symbol they prefer to use.
What Does Dim Mean In Music
A diminished triad chord ) is a triad consisting of a minor third and a diminished fifth above the root – if built on C, a diminished chord would have a C, an E and a G. It resembles a minor triad with a lowered fifth.
In the common practice period, the diminished chord is considered dissonant, or unstable. It lacks tonal center or drive because the diminished fifth symmetrically divides the octave.
A diminished chord occurs in a major scale only on the seventh scale degree in the key of C, this is a B diminished chord . This also occurs in the seventh chord built on the fifth note in C, this is G dominant seventh .
In a twelvetone equal tempered tuning, a diminished chord has 3 semitones between the third and fifth, 3 between the root and third, and 6 between the root and fifth. It is represented by the integer notation 0, 3, 6.
In most sheet music books, Cdim or C° denotes a diminished seventh chord with root C, and Cm5 or Cmb5 denotes a diminished triad with root C. Howevever, in some modern jazz books and some Music Theory literature, Cdim or C° denotes a diminished triad, while Cdim7 or C°7 denotes a diminished seventh chord.
Where To Use Diminished Chords
To figure out where to use a passing diminished chord, find two chords a whole step apart. Next, build a diminished chord on the note between them. Lastly, put the passing chord between the two chords a whole step apart.
For example, lets use the progression C Am F G. The F major and G major chords are a whole step apart. The note between them is F#. Build a F#dim chord and put it between the F and G major chords. The new progression is C Am F F#dim G.

What Is Diminishing Marginal Utility
We briefly touched upon Diminishing Marginal Utility in the last section, so let us look at it more now.
Diminishing Marginal Utility is simply the theory that consumers tend to value a product or service less the more they consume. This concept can help us understand why some consumers behave in different ways.
Diminishing Marginal Utility is where the consumer values each additional unit less and less the more they consume.
Let us take mobile phones as an example. For instance, the new iPhone may have just come out and Jeffery goes straight to the store to pay $799 for it. Jeffery goes home, opens it up and starts using it straight away. His level of utility is extremely high. At the same time, the Marginal Utility he would receive from buying another is virtually zero there could be an argument that it would be negative.
Nevertheless, his utility is well and truly diminished. However, over time, Jeffery may start taking his phone for granted. His daily utility of using the phone starts to decrease. In turn, the utility of purchasing the next new iPhone starts to increase.

Constructing Scales Of The Diminished Type
These scales are developed mathematically using whole and half steps. We assign numeric value to each note, the scales will use the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. The full diminished scale will use 9 notes.
The diminished scale pattern is a whole half step repeating pattern. Initially one can look at it as diminishing the 3rd, 5th, 6th, a m7th, and 8th.
This is difficult to remember. Using enharmonic spellings the diminished scale will have a dim 5th and an aug 5th and is much easier to work with.
What Is The Point Of Diminishing Returns
The point of diminishing returns refers to a point after the optimal level of capacity is reached, where every added unit of production results in a smaller increase in output. It is a concept used in the field of microeconomics.
According to the law of diminishing marginal returns, increasing a factor of production does not always lead to increased marginal productivity. The point of diminishing returns can be identified by taking the second derivative of the production function.

Glossary Of Mathematical Symbols
A mathematical symbol is a figure or a combination of figures that is used to represent a mathematical object, an action on mathematical objects, a relation between mathematical objects, or for structuring the other symbols that occur in a formula. As formulas are entirely constituted with symbols of various types, many symbols are needed for expressing all mathematics.
The most basic symbols are the , and the letters of the Latin alphabet. The decimal digits are used for representing numbers through the HinduArabic numeral system. Historically, uppercase letters were used for representing points in geometry, and lowercase letters were used for variables and constants. Letters are used for representing many other sort of mathematical objects. As the number of these sorts has dramatically increased in modern mathematics, the Greek alphabet and some Hebrew letters are also used. In mathematical formulas, the standard typeface is italic type for Latin letters and lowercase Greek letters, and upright type for upper case Greek letters. For having more symbols, other typefaces are also used, mainly boldface a },\ldots } , German fraktur a _} .
The use of Latin and Greek letters as symbols for denoting mathematical objects is not described in this article. For such uses, see Variable and List of mathematical constants. However, some symbols that are described here have the same shape as the letter from which they are derived, such as } .
The Diminished Seventh Chord
The diminished seventh is a fournote chord that consists of a:
 Root Note
 Diminished 5th
 Diminished 7th
The diminished seventh adds a minorthird above a diminished triad. Meaning the seventh note is three semitones above the flattened fifth.
For example, the seventh note in a Ddim7 chord is Cb. Therefore, the complete Ddim7 chord has the notes D F Ab Cb.

Understanding The Point Of Diminishing Returns
Since adding extra units of a production factor is not always as efficient as it is initially, an optimal production level can be determined. It is the point where the marginal return starts to diminish, and it becomes more difficult to increase the output. It is known as the point of diminishing returns.
At such a point, the is maximized but will decrease if the units of a production factor continue to increase. As the diagram above shows, the point of diminishing return is at L2. Before reaching an L2 number of laborers, putting additional laborers into the production process can efficiently increase the output.
With an L2 number of laborers, the production line achieves its highest efficiency. It is the optimal level of production, as well as the point of diminishing return. Beyond that point, the marginal output starts to decrease, and each additional unit of added labor will result in a smaller increase in output.
In such a case, in order to efficiently allocate its capital after reaching the point of diminishing return, the company should not invest in extra labor but improve other production factors instead for example, by increasing capacity through adding more machines or building another factory.

How Do You Write Twice A Number
Twice a quantity usually indicates to take two of the things in question usually this indicates to multiply by 2. Thus twice a number x can be written symbolically as 2x. If this is part of a problem, say twice a number x is 6, then we can rewrite algebraically as 2x=6 dividing both sides by 2 yields x=3.
What Is A Diminished Chord
A diminished chord is a triad built from the root note, minor third, and a diminished fifth. Its a chord with two minor thirds above the root. Meaning three semitones separate the third and fifth notes of the chord.
For example, a C major triad has the notes C , E , and G . Therefore, a diminished C triad has the notes C, Eb, and Gb.
Diminished chords inject a sense of drama, tension, and suspense into music. They also have a distinct timbre that sounds dark, dissonant, and eerie. Their oddness makes them unique!
However, the flattened fifth makes diminished chords sound unstable and creates a desire for tonal resolution. They leave the listener hanging, which makes the resolve back to consonant chords more impactful. This sense of tension makes them interesting chords to use in your progressions.

n2 – 3n – 108 = 0
n – 12 = 0 or n + 9 = 0
n = 12 or n = 9
Symbols That Do Not Belong To Formulas
In this section, the symbols that are listed are used as some sorts of punctuation marks in mathematical reasoning, or as abbreviations of English phrases. They are generally not used inside a formula. Some were used in classical logic for indicating the logical dependence between sentences written in plain English. Except for the first two, they are normally not used in printed mathematical texts since, for readability, it is generally recommended to have at least one word between two formulas. However, they are still used on a black board for indicating relationships between formulas.
 ,
Used for marking the end of a proof and separating it from the current text. The initialismQ.E.D. or QED is often used for the same purpose, either in its uppercase form or in lower case.
Bourbaki dangerous bend symbol: Sometimes used in the margin to forewarn readers against serious errors, where they risk falling, or to mark a passage that is tricky on a first reading because of an especially subtle argument.
Abbreviation of “therefore”. Placed between two assertions, it means that the first one implies the second one. For example: “All humans are mortal, and Socrates is a human. Socrates is mortal.”
Abbreviation of “because” or “since”. Placed between two assertions, it means that the first one is implied by the second one. For example: “11 is prime it has no positive integer factors other than itself and one.”

How To Use Diminished Chords In Your Progressions
Diminished chords often function as passing chords in a progression. Passing chords spice up standard progressions and create tension between chords with a stronger relationship to the key.
A passing chord acts as a transition that sits inbetween the primary chords of a progression. Typically, a passing chord is not in the same key as the song. As a result, it creates a dissonant sound that needs to resolve to a chord harmonically related to the songs key.
The most common passing chord is the diminished seventh. Try adding a diminished chord in the middle section of your chord sequence. Then resolve it to a major or minor chord one halfstep higher. This technique adds tension and intrigue to a chord progression while remaining melodic.
For example, try replacing the V chord in a standard chord progression with a Dim7 or m7b5 chord. If you have a common I V vi IV chord progression, the diminished chord will play second.
However, diminished chords are not limited to replacing the V chord. You can use them anywhere within a chord progression. But, because diminished chords sound unstable, they rarely play on the first or last bar. You wont find a sequence of diminished chords in a progression, either. They typically occur once for a beat or two within a chord progression. Theyre passing chords, so they pass by quickly.
