Grade 1 Mathematics Module 5 Topic C

Eureka Math / EngageNY Grade 5 Module 3 Lesson 1 Problem Set

During Topic C, students build on their concrete work with composite shapes and begin naming equal parts of wholes, specifically halves and fourths . Students more closely analyze the same composite shapes created in Topic B, recognizing composite shapes made from equal, non-overlapping parts and identifying halves and quarters within rectangular and circular shapes. In Lesson 7, students explore composite shapes that have been made throughout the module and sort them into two categories of shapes, those made from equal parts and those made from non-equal parts. Students count the number of equal parts that form one whole. Lesson 8 introduces the terms half and quarter, or fourths, to name two equal parts of a whole and four equal parts of a whole, respectively. Students learn half-circle and quarter-circle as the names of shapes, and recognize that they are named for their size and shape in relation to a whole circle. Models of rectangular and circular pizzas are used for students to discuss equal parts of the whole. In Lesson 9, students explore halves and fourths more deeply as they identify these parts within circles and rectangles of varying size and dimension. Students recognize that as they partition, or decompose the whole into more equal shares, they create smaller units.

Algebra I Module 5 Topic A Overview

Topic A focuses on the skills inherent in the modeling process: representing graphs, data sets, or verbal descriptions using explicit expressions when presented in graphic form in Lesson 1, as data in Lesson 2, or as a verbal description of a contextual situation in Lesson 3. They recognize the function type associated with the problem and match to or create 1- and 2-variable equations to model a context presented graphically, as a data set, or as a description . Function types include linear, quadratic, exponential, square root, cube root, absolute value, and other piecewise functions. Students interpret features of a graph in order to write an equation that can be used to model it and the function and relate the domain to both representations . This topic focuses on the skills needed to complete the modeling cycle and sometimes uses purely mathematical models, sometimes real-world contexts.

Engageny Algebra I Curriculum

The Algebra 1 curriculum set is designed to help scholars develop fluency inwriting, interpreting, and solving linear equations, The 30 lessons in Module 1 are divided into four topics: An Introduction to Functions, the Structure of Expressions, Solving Equations and Inequalities, and Creating Equations to Solve Problems.Module 2 examines Shapes and Centers of Distributions, Describing Variability and Comparing Distributions, Categorical Data on Two Variables, and Numerical Data on Two Variables. Algebra 1, Module 3 focuses on linear and exponential functions. The module’s 26 lessons are divided into four topics: Linear and Exponential Sequences, Functions and Their Graphs, Transformations of Functions, and Using Functions and Graphs to Solve Problems. In Module 4, pupils learn how to use polynomial functions, as well as quadratic functions, square root functions, cube root functions, and graph and interpret functions. The final module in the course centers on elements of modeling and completing the modeling cycle. Copy-ready assessments, exit tickets, and fluency exercises are included in each module.
