Memorization is; overall, a poor strategy that is resorted to when people havent planned ahead sufficiently and have to cram the night before an exam. There are; however, certain aspects of the course that require memorization like nomenclature terms, reagent names and acronyms, functional groups, and so on. While some students might get the hang of it after a few weeks of the course, others might have to resort to flash cards or other memory-centered devices in order to remember the course material. Theres nothing wrong with that, as long as its coupled with a dedication toward understanding the deeper concepts.

Backpack Shortcut For Reactions

If this makes sense when the mechanism is drawn out,how can you apply the backpack trick when working quickly through reactions?

As with any trick or shortcut:FIRST learn and understand the logic BEHIND the trick or shortcut. Then study the fast and simple method to save you time.

Lets follow the logic of this reaction.;In each scenario above:

  • Oxygen attaches to the more substituted carbon of the initial pi bond
  • The hydrogen atom is removed via a final proton transfer step
  • The backpack is attached to oxygen

Discover The Most Important Named Reactions

Today, named chemical reactions play a crucial role in organic chemistry, which continues to grow in its ability to construct ever more complex and diverse chemical molecules.

The first named reaction in organic synthesis, the Lieben Haloform Reaction, had its origin in 1822 when Serullas found that iodine crystals dissolved in a mixture of alkali and ethanol yielded a yellow precipitate which he called hydroiodide of carbon, today we know this as iodoform .

In 1870, A. Lieben studied the reaction of many carbonyl compounds with iodine and alkali, and postulated rules that formed the basis for the iodoform test. Before spectroscopic methods became widely available for structural identification, the iodoform test helped identify the structure of many organic molecules.

To this day, many new chemical reactions are being reported;and named after their discoverers in recognition of their valuable;contribution;to synthetic organic chemistry.;

  • Starting from basics, you should be aware of all the symbols of elements.
  • First understand the reaction, its reactants, and products formed from the given reactants. Then try to balance the atoms present on the reactant side with atoms present on the product side. Understand its mechanism.
  • Learn all the functional groups.
  • Learn the rules of IUPAC nomenclature thoroughly. This will help you in naming compounds accurately.
  • You need to be able to name a compound from its given formula.
  • For the conversion reactions;in;organic;chemistry.
  • Try to understand;the mechanism of the reactions.
  • There;are;specific mechanisms for the reactions;and;they;are;somehow related too.
  • For example, if one has understood the types of nucleophilic substitution reactions SN1;and;SN2 then any type of substitution with any reactant can be handled.
  • To get a good hold on the conversations, you must remember the main chemical reactions;and;the synthesis of compounds like carbonyls, acids, amines etc.
  • Do remember simple steps of preparations of compounds,;and;yes basic name reactions like aldol reaction help a lot.
  • Practice the equations by forming the product;and;then again;forming the reactants from products, one must learn both the conditions so that at any step of conversion you;are;able to attempt it easily.
  • You don’t need to learn equation by heart. You will never be able to remember it.

What Are Named Reactions

Important Organic Name Reactions | NEET Chemistry Cheat Codes #16 |NEET 2020 Preparation |Arvind sir

Name reaction is a chemical reaction which is named after the person who developed or discovered it. Hundreds of well known organic reactions have been named after people. This trend originated in the development of organic chemistry over the 20th Century when chemists started associating synthetically useful chemical reactions with the names of their discoverers/developers. Many of these reactions were associated with discoverer names to help chemists mnemonically remember the reaction.

For students of class 11th and 12th under the science stream looking to clear competitive exams, learning certain organic chemistry name reactions mentioned in the syllabus is quite crucial. To help you learn the important name reactions in organic chemistry class 11 and class 12, we have provided a list of organic name reactions which offer a quick schematic preview and have been linked to separate pages explaining their description, mechanism, variations, and applications.

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon and its chemical compounds. The topic can be vast and difficult to understand at first. Luckily, with persistence, it is comprehensible. Understanding organic chemistry is crucial to anyone interested in natural or man made chemicals, including those in foods, drinks, and even our own bodies.

Yup Nothing Changed Its Just The Oh Reacting With A Backpack

Now what if I turn that backpack into something else,

For example an ANY alkyl group represented by the letter R.

Same mechanism, but since the product has an OR instead of an OH the product is an ether instead of an alcohol.

Lets try another backpack using a methyl group:

And an isopropyl group:

Do you see how oxygen still reacts the same way?

Oxygen’s electrons still attack the carbocation, and the one hydrogen is still removed in the final deprotonation step. This happens regardless of the other group or backpack attached to the carbon atom.

Using This Logic Heres The Shortcut:

  • Identify your oxygen atom carrying a backpack
  • Cross out the hydrogen atom
  • Circle the backpack
  • Now for the reaction: Break the pi bond
  • Attach an oxygen atom to the more substituted carbon
  • Draw the backpack coming off the oxygen atom
  • Thats it, thats your final product.

Lets see how this works for acid catalyzed hydration with water:

Now the same reaction with an alcohol:

    Lets try this with oxymercuration-demercuration:

And now lets try alkoxymercuration which is the same reaction as above but with alcohol, ie: oxygen carrying a carbon chain backpack.

Q-1. How to start Name reaction of organic chemistry ?

Ans– The Name reaction of organic chemistry can be start once you understand the basics of organic chemistry. With proper knowledge of basics of organic chemistry like what is inducting effect, how to use resonance what are intermediates and few basic reactions after which you can start reading and understanding the Name reaction of organic chemistry.

Q-2. What is the right approach to read Name reaction of organic chemistry ?

    Ans– Organic compounds differ from inorganic compounds in the types of bond formation in the two classes of compounds. A clear concept in the electronic theory of bond formation will be helpful. One must have very clear concept about atomic structure and chemical bonding that atoms consist of central positively charged nuclei surrounded by a number of electrons. These electrons arrange themselves in different shells. The shells have different energies and different maximum capacities for electrons-two in the first shell , eight in the second shell , eight or eighteen in the third shell , etc. before start reading name reaction of organic chemistry one must have clear idea about bonding.;

    Build A Strong Foundation

Students tend to skip the beginning of the lecture and early chapters of material because its background or really easy and jump into the material they dont understand. This is a recipe for self-defeat! Organic chemistry is like a pyramid the top will collapse without a strong base. Even if you think you have no time, go back to the introduction and early chapters and spend some time reviewing this material. You will likely be surprised how much better you will grasp the hard material once you completely understand the easy bit!

    Melting And Boiling Properties

Organic compounds typically melt and many boil. In contrast, while inorganic materials generally can be melted, many do not boil, and instead tend to degrade. In earlier times, the melting point and boiling point provided crucial information on the purity and identity of organic compounds. The melting and boiling points correlate with the polarity of the molecules and their molecular weight. Some organic compounds, especially symmetrical ones, sublime. A well-known example of a sublimable organic compound is para-dichlorobenzene, the odiferous constituent of modern mothballs. Organic compounds are usually not very stable at temperatures above 300;°C, although some exceptions exist.
