How Does Apa Style Work
When working with APA there are two things to keep in mind: in-text citations and the reference page. In-text citations will use the author’s name and the date within your research paper. These citations will refer back to the reference page at the end, which lists all the sources that you may have used in your research paper.
Note: If you are assigned a research paper in APA style for one of your courses, it’s a good idea to ask your instructor the questions below. He or she will be able to explain details about the requirements for the paper. For now, we will go over the basic instructions of how to use in-text citations and how to set up the reference page.
The Beginnings Of Psychology As A Discipline
In the early days of psychology there were two dominant theoretical perspectives regarding how the brain worked, structuralism and functionalism.
Structuralism was the name given to the approach pioneered by Wilhelm Wundt , which focused on breaking down mental processes intro the most basic components.
The term originated from Edward Titchener, an American psychologist who had been trained by Wundt. Wundt was important because he separated psychology from philosophy by analyzing the workings of the mind in a more structured way, with the emphasis being on objective measurement and control.
Structuralism relied on trained introspection, a research method whereby subjects related what was going on in their minds while performing a certain task.
However, introspection proved to be an unreliable method because there was too much individual variation in the experiences and reports of research subjects.
Despite the failure of introspection Wundt is an important figure in the history of psychology as he opened the first laboratory dedicated to psychology in 1879, and its opening is usually thought of as the beginning of modern experimental psychology.
An American psychologist named William James developed an approach which came to be known as functionalism, that disagreed with the focus of Structuralism.

A forensic psychologist must hold a Ph.D. and complete a supervised internship to receive licensure. These professionals can qualify for other positions without earning additional certifications or degrees. Common careers for forensic psychologists looking to advance include:
Behavioral health directors lead behavioral health organizations. They typically work for healthcare facilities, coordinating behavioral health-related patient care. Some forensic psychologists become behavioral health directors, who make an average salary of $84,530 a year, more than $10,000 above the average salary for individuals in forensic psychology.
Typical forensic psychologist duties include some clinical psychology work. Clinical psychologists assess, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. PayScale reports that clinical psychologists earn an average annual salary of $81,510, significantly higher than the average forensic psychologist.

The exact format of each individual reference may vary somewhat depending on whether you are referencing an , a book or journal article, or an electronic source.
It pays to spend some time looking at the specific requirements for each type of reference before formatting your source list. Here are some useful tips for incorporating reference pages into your document.
- Start a new page for your references.
- Title the new page “References.”
- Center the title text at the top of the page.
- Put all entries in alphabetical order.
- Align the first line of a reference flush with the left margin.
- Indent each additional line .
- Make sure the reference section is double-spaced.
- Use italics for titles of books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.
- Include all sources cited both in the text and on the reference page.
Any reference that appears in the text of your report or article must be cited on the reference page, and any item appearing on your reference page must be also included somewhere in the body of your text.

No, not necessarily. Dr. Sadler, a professor in the psychology department at IUP, states that you can cite articles that will agree or disagree with your ideas. He goes on to say:
- The agreement or disagreement should be conveyed by your wording. For example, âThis interpretation is consistent with findings by Smith and Jones . . . .â Or, you might say, âIf my prediction is confirmed, it would falsify the theory of episodic memory proposed by Tulving â Or, âA number of researchers do not agree with this view .â
So, not only can you use journal articles to support your ideas, but you can also use them to show that some authors do not agree with your ideas or have ideas different from yours.

On August 3-6, some 10,000-15,000 of the approximately 70,000 members of the American Psychological Association will descend upon the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in downtown Washington, DC. There, they will attend talks, colloquia, and meetings on all matters psychological and will commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of their association. As a professional body, they have much to celebrate. But the road to APA Convention 2017 was not a straightforward march of like-minded professionals towards a common goal.

It began humbly enough. In 1892, Granville Stanley Hall, professor of psychology and president of Clark University, invited 26 American psychologists to join him in forming a psychological association. A dozen invitees attended the first organizational meeting, in Halls office, on July 8, 1892. There, they founded the American Psychological Association. The participants learned that many psychologists who could not attend the meeting, such as John Dewey and Lightner Witmer, had agreed to join, and they selected two psychologists who had not been originally invited, Hugo Münsterberg of Harvard and Edward Titchener of Cornell. They elected Hall as the first president and scheduled their first meeting, at the University of Pennsylvania, for December of that year.
The Perspectives Of Psychology
Structuralism and functionalism have since been replaced by several dominant and influential approaches to psychology, each one underpinned by a shared set of assumptions of what people are like, what is important to study and how to study it.
Psychoanalysis, founded by Sigmund Freud was the dominant paradigm in psychology during the early twentieth century.Freud believed that people could be cured by making conscious their unconscious thoughts and motivations, thus gaining insight.

What Is The References Page And How Is It Put Together
The References page lists all the sources you have cited in your paper. The entry for a journal article should look like this:

As you can see in the example above, the authors’ names appear first . Then the year of publication is given in parentheses. Then the title is listed . Then the name of the journal is listed, the volume number, and finally, the pages of the article.
For a book, the entry looks like this:

In the example above, the author’s name is listed , then the date, followed by the title with only the first word capitalized, the city of publication, and then the name of the publisher.

Membership And Title Of Psychologist
APA policy on the use of the title psychologist is contained in the Model Act for State Licensure of Psychologists: psychologists have earned a doctoral degree in psychology and may not use the title “psychologist” and/or deliver psychological services to the public, unless the psychologist is licensed or specifically exempted from licensure under the law. State licensing laws specify state specific requirements for the education and training of psychologists leading to licensure. Psychologists who are exempted from licensure could include researchers, educators, or general applied psychologists who provide services outside the health and mental health field.
Full membership with the APA in United States and Canada requires doctoral training whereas associate membership requires at least two years of postgraduate studies in psychology or approved related discipline. The minimal requirement of a doctoral dissertation related to psychology for full membership can be waived in certain circumstances where there is evidence that significant contribution or performance in the field of psychology has been made.

Apa Internship Crisis For Graduate Students
The APA is the main accrediting body for U.S. clinical and counseling psychology doctoral training programs and internship sites. APA-accredited clinical psychology PhD and PsyD programs typically require students to complete a one-year full-time clinical internship in order to graduate . However, there is currently an “internship crisis” as defined by the American Psychological Association, in that approximately 25% of clinical psychology doctoral students do not match for internship each year. This crisis has led many students to re-apply for internship, thus delaying graduation, or to complete an unaccredited internship, and often has many emotional and financial consequences. Students who do not complete an APA-accredited internship in the U.S. are barred from certain employment settings, including VA hospitals, the military, and cannot get licensed in some states, such as Utah and Mississippi. Additionally, some postdoctoral fellowships and other employment settings require or prefer an APA-accredited internship.
