Core Math Concepts Every Ninth Grader Should Graduate Knowing
Regardless of which education track students enroll in, all graduating ninth graders will be tested on and expected to demonstrate an understanding of several core concepts related to advaned mathematics including those in the fields of number identification, measurements, geometry, algebra and patterning, and probability.
For number identification, students should be able to reason, order, compare and solve multi-step problems with rational and irrational numbers as well as understand the complex number system, be able to investigate and solve a number of problems, and use the coordinate system with both negative and positive integers.
In terms of measurements, ninth grade graduates are expected to apply measurement knowledge to two- and three-dimensional figures accurately including distances and angles and a more complex plane while also being able to solve a variety of word problems involving capacity, mass and time using the Pythagorean theorem and other similar math concepts.
Students are also expected to understand the basics of geometry including the ability to apply trigonometry to problem situations involving triangles and transformations, coordinates, and vectors to solve other geometric problems they will also be tested on deriving the equation of a circle, ellipse, parabolas, and hyperbolas and identifying their properties, especially of quadratic and conic sections.
Is Algebra 2 A Required Class
Five years ago, only a few states mandated that students take Algebra II to graduate from high school. As a result, many students never made it as far as Algebra II, although they satisfied state graduation requirements. Now, 20 states and Washington, D.C. require Algebra II for high school graduation.
What Math Comes After Algebra 2
In our school, a student can take PreCalculus after Algebra 2 or two separate semester classes called Finite Math and Probability and Statistics. Some schools have an entire class on Trigonometry after Algebra 2, but thats part of PreCalculus at our school. Those are the three most common options after Algebra 2.

One reason that it is so important to take math classes is to be ready for college and for job training. Jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics help people solve problems and do things they care about. Standard High School Math Curriculum

Forty-five states have agreed to follow Common Core standards for math, which aim to create a more standardized math curriculum across the country. The Common Core standards state that six content categories should be covered in high school math classes:
- Algebra
- Pre-Calculus
- Calculus
However, this order is definitely not set in stone. Some schools teach algebra 1 and 2 back-to-back then move on to geometry, some schools include trigonometry with geometry or pre-calculus instead of algebra 2, and some students take pre-algebra or a similar course if they need to strengthen their math skills before taking algebra 1. However, most high schools follow a course order similar to the one above for their math classes.
The math class you take freshman year will be chosen based on your previous math classes and any placement tests you may have taken before starting high school. So, if you already took algebra 1 in 8th grade, you may be able to start with geometry as a freshman and continue down the list from there. Also, not every high school student takes pre-calculus or calculus.

How Can You Exceed Expectations
Because high schools offer many math classes at varying levels of depth, speed, and difficulty, the math classes you take and the grades you receive in them will be looked at closely by colleges to help determine your academic ability and how good a fit you would be at the school.
