High School AP Biology – The Immune System Cram Course: Complement System

Get ready because a new school year has begun! Hopefully, things are slowly going back to normal in your area and in-person classes are back .

Many students say that AP Biology is one of the most challenging advanced classes in high school so if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the new information and vocabulary in the class, youre not alone. This list of tips will help you succeed in school and prepare well for the AP exam in the spring. If you feel like you need more hands-on help in the class, you can also check out our Classes and Resources sections!

As you may already know, AP Biology is a college-level course that covers four major ideas:

 • Idea 1: Evolution

 • Idea 3: Information Storage and Transmission

 • Idea 4: System Interactions

Is The Ap Biology Content Difficult

There’s no question that the breadth of content covered in AP Biology is extensive. It requires memorization of complex processes, along with a deep understanding of how biological concepts and themes connect with one another. There are also many lab assignments that teachers have to schedule around lectures, so it ends up being a pretty heavy workload overall.

The AP Biology exam could also be considered more challenging than other AP tests because of its format. The free-response section consists of six questions , which is on the higher end for AP exams. The Bio test requires extensive knowledge of many different topics as well as a lot of stamina.

Factor 3: Content Difficulty

The complexity of the curriculum is one of the most important factors that goes into determining the difficulty of an AP class. This essentially boils down to the amount of material the course covers and how advanced that material is. Some courses have high 5 and passing rates because their content is extremely challenging and only very driven students will take them, not because they are easy classes.

Ap Chemistry Vs Ap Biology

Our son took physics 1 honors as a freshman and is currently taking chemistry honors.

He is debating what science class he has to take next year between AP Chemistry vs AP Biology.

He wants to take AP bio in junior and AP chemistry in senior year. I feel that taking AP Chemistry makes more sense since it is sequential as he is taking chemistry honors now.

However, our son thinks taking AP bio in junior year makes more sense since AP biology tends to be relatively ‘easier’than AP chemistry for most kids and his next year classes are rigorous.

His classes for next year are as following:

AP Engligh

AP Chemistry or AP Biology.

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts or inputs on this!

Test Content: Section Ii

Louisville High School: Biology Class at LHS!

Like many of the questions on the Multiple Choice section, to answer the Free Response questions, you will need to read and analyze data. Thats why you have your 10-minute reading period. Use it well; mark up your test and make comments in the margins. Organizing your thoughts during this important time will save you later as the minutes begin to tick away.

Unlike the AP English Literature Exam, the writing section on the AP Biology Exam doesnt ask you to produce different types of writing. For example, think back to your English classes. The difference between short answer and essay is more than just the number of words. Essays have introductions, conclusions, and transition sentences. Fortunately, you do not need to worry about these type of writing conventions on the AP Biology Free Response Section.

As you discover on the Long Free Response, your long answer is merely a series of shorter answers about the same data set. As each task is compartmentalized, you are less likely to leave out or miss important information in your replies.

But how much is enough? Three sentences? A whole paragraph? In my time, Ive taught a lot of subjects, and no matter what type of writing youre doing, it all boils down to three steps :

 • Answer the question in your first sentence.
 • Back your answer up with sufficient evidence.
 • Connect your evidence with your answer through personal analysis.

Factor 4: Student Testimonials

What do students say about the class? This can change from high school to high school, but there should be some consistency based on the fact that everyone is supposed to be learning the same curriculum and taking the same test. Student feedback can provide more information about the day to day challenges of the class and whether the workload is especially daunting.

Ap Biology Vs Ap Chemistry

I’m a rising senior and am at a loss as to which class to choose. I feel that chemistry would be more useful in the long run and be more suitable for me because it is more mathematically oriented. However, many kids have said that it is a very hard class at my school. AP Biology, on the other hand, is simply a “read til’ you drop” class. Most competent students at my school have told me that it is relatively easy. I just don’t find reading and memorizing useless facts that will slip from my memory quickly very appealing. Suggestions?

What do you want to do in life? AP Chem is generally harder but AP bio is more busy work. AP bio is definitely easier IMO.

i faced this same dilemma about 2-3 weeks ago. i chose to go with ap chem because im more of a concepts/math person as opposed to memorization, plus i like the ap chem teacher better 🙂 have you taken either normal/honors chem/bio? if so, which one did you do better in?

I took Honors Biology in 9th grade and Honors Chemistry in 10th grade. I ended up with about the same grade in each.

bio = easier than chem in all respects

chem is memorization + math

bio is memorization

Bio => easier but A LOT more workChem => virtually NO WORK but harder. so u’ll need to study a bit.

People are making comments that aren’t universal; they are unique to their own opinions or their own experiences at their high school.

What Happens If You Fail Ap Biology

High School AP Biology – The Immune System Cram Course: Skin

Failing the AP® Biology exam is not the end of the world! This exam is given every year and you have the option to retake the exam as often as you like. You can retake it if youve failed the exam in the past or if you passed but would like to try for a higher score.;

Of course, each exam will be different and it is recommended that you study for your retake exam as hard or harder than you studied for your first AP® Biology exam.

There is little need to worry about the impact of failing the AP® Biology exam on your high school GPA. Most schools dont factor the AP® Biology exam score into your course grade, choosing instead to focus on your coursework and course tests. If youve maintained high scores in your AP® Biology course, failing the exam will not have any effect on that grade.

Colleges will typically only award college credit to students who score at least a 3 or 4 on the AP® Biology exam. If you failed or scored lower than a 3, you will need to retake the AP® Biology exam in order to be awarded college credit.;

You can also negate any effects a failing score would have on your college admissions chances by choosing not to send low scores to certain colleges. You are in control of which colleges receive your AP® exam scores. In addition, if you did send a low score to a college and then score higher on your retake, you can have the college replace your lower score with your higher score.

1 hour and 30 minutes

Section 2 consists of two long free-response questions, both of which will focus on the interpretation and evaluation of experimental results. One of these questions will require graphing in your response. The other four questions in Section 2 are short-answer questions that will cover the areas of scientific investigation, conceptual analysis, analysis of a model or a visual representation, and analysis of data.

Reminder: Improper or incomplete graphing can cost you points. Be sure to brush up on graphing best practices prior to the exam.

The units covered in the AP® Biology course are weighted in the exam as follows:

Units

10-15%

Senior Year: Optional Electives

There is no standard science subject for high school seniors. Most high schools do not require seniors to take a science class, but if you choose to, you can take an elective. Electives are offered on a wide variety of subjects, including astronomy, human biology, and zoology.

Take Your Academic Strengths And Weaknesses Into Account

As mentioned, although AP Biology is memorization-heavy, it’s also important to have a solid understanding of basic science and experimental design to succeed. There’s a small math component to the class as well, but it doesn’t go beyond algebra, geometry, and graphing skills.

If math and science aren’t typically your strong suits, AP Biology might be more difficult for you than it is for other students. On the other hand, if you’ve always done well in these types of classes, you might find AP Biology to be less challenging.

Still, AP Biology incorporates skills from many different subject areas. Because there’s just so much memorization involved, the actual study skills you need to succeed are somewhat similar to those required in social studies classes. Well-rounded students might actually have the biggest advantage in this class, as it draws on skills from a variety of subject areas but requires you to implement them in a scientific context.

Enrolling In An Ap Biology Course

Enrollment in this course is dependent upon the qualifications set up by your high school. Some schools may only allow you to enroll in the course if you have taken and performed well in prerequisite classes. Others may allow you to enroll in the AP Biology course without taking prerequisite classes. Talk to your school counselor about the necessary steps to take to enroll in the course. It is important to note that this course is fast-paced and designed to be at a college level. Anyone wishing to take this course should be prepared to work hard and spend time in class, as well as outside of class, in order to do well in this course.

What Is Ap Biology

Advanced-placement biology is an introductory, college-level biology course taught by high school biology teachers at participating high schools. You might take this course and the exam to skip your entry-level biology course once you enter college, or increase your chances of getting into an advanced college biology course. Or, you may just want the extra challenge. Plus, it can look good on your admissions application.

What’s The Standard High School Science Curriculum

Most high schools require students to complete two to three years of science classes in order to graduate. These classes often include a laboratory component in which students must conduct hands-on experiments as part of the class.

The course sequence for science classes in most US high schools goes like this:

Biology Chemistry Physics

Some schools teach earth science during freshman year and then move on to biology and chemistry, whereas others follow the “Physics First” curriculum in which students take physics as freshmen.

The majority of high schools, however, follow the course sequence above and which we look at in more detail below.

Don’t Miss: What Does Abiotic Mean In Biology

Factor 1: Passing Rate

The passing rate for an AP class is the percentage of students who earn a 3 or above on the exam. If the passing rate is on the lower side, it might indicate a more difficult class.

However, the passing rate can also be a deceptive statistic. Sometimes, passing rates in the most difficult subjects are very high because only the most dedicated students take the class. A smaller pool of more serious students will be a better prepared group overall.

Do Honors Classes Boost Your Gpa

Scientific method

It depends. A lot of high schools uses a weighted GPA scale, giving a GPA boost to students who take honors and AP classes. For example, an A in a college prep class might earn you a 4.0 while an A in an honors class gets you a 4.5 and an A in an AP class results in a 5.0.

Weighted GPA scales, and thus taking honors classes in high school, typically only benefit you GPA-wise when it comes to class rankings and scholarships. Colleges usually recalculate GPAs to get rid of the extra boost that high schools award to honors and AP students. This allows colleges to more equally compare applicants coming from different high schools because not all high schools use a weighted system.

If you apply for a scholarship from your high school or a local organization, your GPA generally stays weighted. This means taking those honors classes really pays off since you have the potential to earn higher than a 4.0. Youll look like an impressive candidate, especially if other applicants dont have weighted GPAs.
