Early Life And Career

Green was born to Mike and Sydney Green in Birmingham, Alabama, but his family soon moved to Orlando, Florida, where he was raised. He graduated from Winter Park High School in 1998 and then earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from Eckerd College and a M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana. His master’s thesis was entitled “Of Both Worlds: How the Personal Computer and the Environmental Movement Change Everything”.

Throughout high school and college, Green created and designed websites for himself and local clients. His first project, the “Mars Exploration Page”, in 1994, experienced minor success on the heels of the Mission. Later website, IHateI4.com, brought press from local news channels and the Orlando Sentinel. Green continued as a web developer after moving to Montana for graduate school, focusing on developing websites for educational institutions and environmental non-profit organizations.

During the mid-2000s, Green wrote regularly for Mental Floss and co-authored one of their books, Mental Floss: Scatterbrained.

Brotherhood 2.0

From January 1 to December 31, 2007, Hank Green and his brother John ran a video blog project titled Brotherhood 2.0. The original project ran every week day for the entire year, with the premise that the brothers would cease all text-based communication for the year and instead converse by daily video blogs, made available to the public via their channel Vlogbrothers and on their website.

Youtube Stars The ‘green Brothers’ And Asu Partner To Create High

Editor’s note: This story originally appeared in the fall 2020 issue of ASU Thrive magazine.

A lot of people watch YouTube videos 1 billion monthly users, in fact. Because much of that content is user-generated, quality can vary. Over the years, though, some content has become highly professional, including videos by the Green brothers . They have created several educational YouTube channels, including Crash Course, which has more than 1.3 billion video views and more than 11 million subscribers.

Arizona State University is helping to further expand professional-quality educational offerings by partnering with the Green brothers to create entertaining content based on curricula from ASU faculty. ASU Study Hall on YouTube serves up expert content in an entertaining format combining the brothers knowledge in scriptwriting and Thought Cafes animation to bring complex lessons to life.

Both Crash Course and ASU are all about providing high-quality educational content for a global online community, Hank Green said. So were excited to help you build your skills. Grab hold of this opportunity because its open to anyone and its going to be great.

John Green’s Online Work Yields Smart Money

When cameras flash and red-carpet reporters ask John Green about his first foray into the movie business, the Indianapolis novelist speaks up for his day job.

“This is wonderful, but I like being a writer,” Green said when promoting the film adaptation of “The Fault in Our Stars” last month in Nashville, Tenn. “Movies are fun and weird, but I’m a book writer.”

Oddly enough, Green likely would retain fame and fortune if he never wrote again. He works on so many other things that it’s a stretch to list “author” as his day job even if that’s how the general public will know Green when “Fault” arrives in theaters on June 6.

Online video built the John Green empire, making him an entrepreneur, educator and philanthropist:

His DFTBA Records, an Internet merchandise company, generated $2.2 million in sales in 2013, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

His “Crash Course” YouTube series, where he teaches world history, U.S. history and literature, rolls up about 350,000 to 400,000 views daily.

His annual YouTube videothon known as “Project for Awesome,” which raises money for not-for-profit causes, collected a record $869,171 last December.

But John Green isn’t entirely self-made. His brother, Hank Green, who John credits as the idea man, is a partner in DFTBA, “Crash Course” and “Project for Awesome.”

Hank said he saw the promise of online video shortly after the debut of “Brotherhood 2.0.”

But online buzz launched the novel’s ascent.
