Three Methods Of Calculating Population Density

What is Drainage Density? | A Level Geography (2021)

There are three different ways of expressing the population density of our planet. These different methods are used to explain the relationship between people and the environment, so that geographers can understand the impact that population has on their quality of life, the services that governments can provide them, and the impact that humans have on our planets resources.

Population Density Information And Statistics

  • M.A., Geography, California State University – Northridge
  • B.A., Geography, University of California – Davis

Population density is an often reported and commonly compared statistic for places around the world. Population density is the measure of the number of people per unit area, commonly represented as people per square mile .

The population density of the planet is about 38 people per square mile . The population density of the United States is approximately 87.4 people per square mile, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

Why Do Ecologists Estimate Population Size Rather Than Count Individual Members Of A Population

The unique thing about population ecologists is that they study the relationships within ecosystems by studying the properties of populations rather than individuals: Population density refers to how many organisms occupy a specific area. Dispersion describes the distribution of a population throughout a certain area.

What Is Concentration In Human Geography

Dispersion- The spacing of people within geographic population boundaries. Concentration The spread of a feature over space. Dispersed/ Scattered- If objects are relatively far apart. Clustered/ Agglomerated- If objects are close/grouped together. The arrangement of features in space.

What are the three properties of density geography?

The arrangement of a feature in space, is made up of 3 properties : density, concentration, and pattern.

What Is An Example Of Arithmetic Density

Year 7 Geography

Human Population Density This type of measurement is called arithmetic density, and is reported as the total number of people per land area. For example, as of 2014, the Nile Delta has a pop. density of 1000 people per square kilometer. In other words, an average of 1000 people are living in an area 1 x 1 km.

How Do Geographers Use Arithmetic Density

Geographers most frequently use arithmetic density, which is the total number of objects in an area (Figures 2.2. In population geography, arithmetic density refers to the total number of people divided by the total land area. To compute the arithmetic density, divide the population by the land area.

What Is Physiological Density Used For

Physiological density is the number of persons per unit of agricultural land. This measure of density is useful, because it can give us a rough estimate of how many people an area of farmland can reasonably support. Physiological density is also helpful when studying population pressure and overcrowding.

Some Challenges In Measuring Density

  • Density is only a count of the number of plants present. It does not tell you much about plant health, forage, or productivity. For example, 4 healthy individuals per unit area will produce the same data as 2 healthy and 2 unhealthy individuals per unit area.

  • It is often difficult to determine whether you have one individual or many. For example, how do you record the density of sod-forming grasses?

  • It is very difficult to use density to describe fungi, mosses, or lichen.

  • Density is a scale-dependent measure. Importantly, it is dependent on both the size of the quadrat and the scale over which the species typically occupies. For example, if the species has a sparse population then you might need a very large sampling frame to capture any individuals. Alternatively, if the species occurs in patches, then depending on the size of your sampling frame you may record a high density where in other areas you may record none.

  • Determining density can be very time consuming in dense or complex environments. For example, imagine measuring the density of shrubs in the two figures below. .

  • Summary Questions

  • If we have a quadrat of size 12 inches by 12 inches what is the density in square feet if we record 20 individuals, 200 individuals, 4000 individuals and 50,000 individuals?

  • How would this answer change if we consider the measurement per square mile?

Physiological Density On The Ap Human Geography Exam

Population distribution and density | Geography Class 12

One of the most helpful portions of each AP® Human Geography Crash Course Review is our focus on the AP® Human Geography exam. On your AP® Human Geo exam, you may be asked to consider different types of population density. Youre likely going to need to define what exactly physiological density is and why its important for each country to understand theirs, so you will need a working physiological density definition. For example, study questions have considered a number of factors. Physiological population density is viewed as a superior measure of population density for what reason? It is more reflective of population pressure on arable land. Make sure you also know how physiological density is affected, for example, by countries that have lower levels of arable land or higher levels of population .

We look at population through double lenses of space and place. Human populations have moved and settled in a variety of locations over a long period of time. That movement or migration raises several questions. What makes up a population? What makes it grow or decline? Why do populations move to a new location? In this AP® Human Geography study guide, we will explore the concept of population density as a sub-set of demography, which is the study of the characteristics of a human population.

Population is an important topic in AP® Human Geography and is heavily tested on the exam. It is important to know and be able to apply the concepts of population density, at every scale from local to global. We will discuss population density as a way to explain the relationship between people and their environment. For the AP® Human Geography Exam, it is also important to know how to calculate population density and the implications it has on society and the environment.

Why Is Density In Geography Important

This measure of density is useful, because it can give us a rough estimate of how many people an area of farmland can reasonably support. It also suggests that the available agricultural land is being used by more people, and it may reach its output limit sooner than a country that has a lower physiological density.

Communities are made up of populations of different species. In biology, a population is a group of organisms of the same species that live in the same area. The population is the unit of natural selection and evolution. How large a population is and how fast it is growing are often used as measures of its health.

Population Density And The Ap Human Geography Exam

We know that AP® Human Geography concepts like population may be hard to study for. But thats why weve created this AP® Human Geography crash course on population density, to bring those concepts into focus. The AP® Human Geography exam will test your knowledge of human population characteristics and the how population density is used to explain the relationship between people and the environment. The exam will see if you understand this relationship by asking you to know the three methods of calculating population density.

You can expect multiple-choice questions on the how population density influences political, economic, and social processes. You should be able to express the influence that population density has on the environment and natural resources and the need for additional infrastructure and urban services.

    Physiological Density Around The World

Singapore tops the list when it comes to countries with the highest physiological density, at nearly 4 times that of the second highest Singapore has a density of 440,998 per square kilometer of arable land. When we view Hong Kong, we see 131,101 and Djibouti gets us 51,861. Remember, this is the number of people who are relying on one square kilometer of land to get all their food , and these numbers continue to rise.

Other countries have extremely low physiological density. For example, Australia has a density of only 43 people per square kilometer of arable land. Kazakhstan has only 69, and Canada is at only 78. This means that there are fewer people living in the country compared to the amount of farmland that they have. In these countries, farmland is more plentiful than in many of the higher density countries, which tend to have more urban areas and a lot less farmland. After all, when we look at the overall population density , we come up with 6,483. While still high, thats a far cry from 440,000.

How Does Population Density Impact The Environment And Natural Resources

    Population Densities (AP Human Geography)

As the world population grows, greater pressure is being placed on arable land, water, energy, and natural resources to provide a satisfactory supply of food while maintaining balance in our ecosystem. Population density can have a negative impact on our environment and natural resources. These pressures can lead to deforestation, result in overcrowding, and could lead to the destruction of our planets delicate ecosystem. Growing populations use large amounts of nonrenewable resources like timber, coal, and oil. Once these natural resources are gone, they are gone forever.

Population density impacts the carrying capacity of an area. The carrying capacity is defined as how many people an area can support on a sustained basis. Together with density, carrying capacity can define whether an area is overcrowded. You can have an area of high population density but is not considered overcrowded if the area has a high carrying capacity. The area may have very rich soil and modern farming methods. A country such as Greenland has a very low carrying capacity. This could make the country overpopulated at a density that would make other places underpopulated.

    Population Distribution And Density

People are unevenly distributed around the world. Population distribution is affected by environmental and human factors around the world. Find out more about these factors.

The map shows patterns of population density on a global scale. Note that:

    • areas of high and low population density are unevenly spread across the world
    • the majority of places with high population densities are found in the northern hemisphere

The population density of a country has very little to do with its level of economic development. For example, both Bangladesh and Japan are very densely populated, but Bangladesh is a LEDC and Japan is a MEDC.

    Why Is Arithmetic Density Useful

Arithmetic density lets us understand where urbanization is occurring and the pressures people place on land in areas that are not urban but are still very densely populated. Understanding agricultural density lets us keep track of where domestic food sources are and how many farms are in operation.

How Do You Calculate Density In Geography

    5/5calculate densitydensityanswered comprehensively

Population density is calculated by counting all the individuals present at a given time in a given space, divided by the number of units of area or space.

Secondly, what is density of population How is it calculated explain with examples? It is calculated by dividing the population by the area. For example, France has a population of 60,561,200, and an area of 551,695 square kilometres, so its population density is about 109.8 persons per square kilometre. A number of factors can affect population density. For example, the climate.

Likewise, what is population density in geography?

Places which are densely populated contain many people. Population density is a measurement of the number of people in an area. It is an average number. Population density is calculated by dividing the number of people by area. Population density is usually shown as the number of people per square kilometer.

How are the 3 types of population density calculated?

With this in mind, population density is most often calculated by the number of people per square kilometer. Population density is often measured in three different ways. There is arithmetic density, physiological density, and agricultural density.
