Jokes With Numeral Bases

What school stands for

Some jokes depend on ambiguity of numeral bases.

There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don’t.

This joke subverts the trope of phrases that begin with “there are two types of people in the world…” and relies on an ambiguous meaning of the expression 10, which in the binary numeral system is equal to the decimal number 2. There are many alternative versions of the joke, such as “There are two types of people in this world. Those who can extrapolate from incomplete information.”

Another pun using different radices, asks:

Q. Why do mathematicians confuse Halloween and Christmas?A. Because 31 = 25 .

The play on words lies in the similarity of the abbreviation for October/ and December/Decimal, and the coincidence that both equal the same amount .

What Is The Mean Median And Mode

The mean is the number you get by dividing the sum of a set of values by the number of values in the set.

In contrast, the median is the middle number in a set of values when those values are arranged from smallest to largest.

The mode of a set of values is the most frequently repeated value in the set.

To illustrate the difference, lets look at a very simple example.

What Does Pemdas Stand For

PEMDAS is a great acronym to help you memorize the order of operations. You can use the common mnemonic “Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally” or even come up with your own phrase as part of your studying.

When you remember that parentheses come before exponents, which come before multiplication and division, which comes before addition and subtraction, youll be on the right track to getting the right answer any time you apply that set of rules to a problem.

Why Is The Order Of Operations Important

The " M" in MSNBC Does Not Stand For Mathematician

The order in which you calculate your operations will determine whether you find the correct answer to a complex mathematical expression. Let’s take even a simple example:

According to PEMDAS, you should do the multiplication first:

However, if you choose to do the addition first, you get a different and incorrect answer:

The PEMDAS rule helps you from arriving at the wrong answer if you mix up the order of parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, and addition and subtraction.

We did the heavy lifting for you and scoured the interweb for some of the most relatable reading memes ever! Enjoy the following 73 reading memes and curl up with a good book afterward!

Pemdas Is An Acronym For The Order Of Operations

When you take the letters in the mnemonic device, “Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally” , you get PEMDAS. Each letter represents an operation in math:

P: Parentheses

A: Addition

S: Subtraction

When doing order of operations, the order of the letters in PEMDAS tells you in what order you should complete mathematical expressions. Evaluating a set of parentheses always comes first. Next, compute any exponents. Then, move onto multiplication and division. Finally, finish with addition and subtraction.

Mathematical Twitter is normally a quiet, well-ordered place, a refuge from the aggravations of the internet. But on July 28, someone who must have been a troll off-duty decided to upset the stillness, and did so with a surefire provocation.

It has to do with something that high school teachers call the order of operations. The latest blowup concerned this seemingly simple question:

oomfies solve this

Many respondents were certain the answer was 16. Others heard Yanny, not Laurel, and insisted the right answer was 1. Thats when the trash talking began. Some of yall failed math and it shows, said one. Another posted a photo showing that even two different electronic calculators disagreed. The normally reassuring world of math, where right and wrong exist, and logic must prevail, started to seem troublingly, perhaps tantalizingly, fluid.

The question above has a clear and definite answer, provided we all agree to play by the same rules governing the order of operations. When, as in this case, we are faced with several mathematical operations to perform to evaluate expressions in parentheses, carry out multiplications or divisions, or do additions or subtractions the order in which we do them can make a huge difference.

Where Does Transitive Property Come From

The transitive property meme comes from the transitive property of equality in mathematics. In math, if A=B and B=C, then A=C. So, if A=5 for example, then B and C must both also be 5 by the transitive property. This is true ina foundational property ofmath because numbers are constant and both sides of the equals sign must be equal, by definition.

OK, enough math.

The transitive property slang/meme, on the other hand, misapplies the transitive property to non-numerical things to reach illogical conclusions or false equivalencies. For example, humans eat cows and cows eat grass, so by the transitive property, humans eat grass. Unlike in math, just because the first two statements are true does not make the final conclusion true. The humor in the meme relies on the absurdity of attempting to use the transitive property outside of math.

The meme apparently evolved out of the practice of sports fans attempting to apply the transitive property to sports teams and athletes. While it almost certainly predates the internet, as far back as 1992 sports fans were attempting to argue their team was the best using the transitive property on Usenet groups. It has reached the point of a sports cliché, with web sites like myteamisbetterthanyourteam.com created just to mock it.

Is Math Racist New Course Outlines Prompt Conversations About Identity Race In Seattle Classrooms

Is Seattle really teaching that “math is racist”? Why did parents start to see ideas for math lessons that go far beyond numbers and into questions of identity?

These and other questions erupted on Twitter, shortly after Seattle Public Schools released a draft of new learning objectives that integrate ethnic studies into math, and after conservative news outlets began berating the district.

Seattle schools are in the process of developing ethnic-studies frameworks for different subjects, including social studies and art.

Other states, including Vermont, Oregon and California, are already creating K-12 materials that prioritize the experiences of communities of color. But while some school districts are only building stand-alone ethnic-studies classes, Seattle is also rethinking existing courses to be taught through an anti-racist lens.

In a U.S. history class, for example, histories of oppression, institutionalized racism, community organizing and resistance can be worked into the lesson plan, said Wayne Au, a professor at the , who has helped lead Seattle’s ethnic-studies initiative.

In math, lessons are more theoretical. Seattle’s recently released proposal includes questions like, “Where does Power and Oppression show up in our math experiences?” and “How is math manipulated to allow inequality and oppression to persist?”

It’s not the first time the project has been attacked. Some detractors, Au said, don’t understand what ethnic studies is.

How To Find The Mean Median And Mode

Heres an example set of seven values: 2, 3, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9.

To find the mean: add up all the values and then divide that total by the number of values , resulting in a mean of 5. This is what most people are referring to when they refer to the average of some set of numbers.

To find the median: find the value thats sequentially in the middle. In a set of seven numbers arranged in increasing value, the median is the fourth number . In this set , the median is 4. When a set has an even number of values, the median is the mean of the two middle values .

To find the mode: simply look to see which value shows up the most. In the example set, the mode is 3, since it occurs twice and all the other values occur only once.

Of course, this set of values is very simple compared to data sets youre likely to encounter in real life. In cases when there is too much data to look at all at once, there are often special tools that you can use to determine the mean, median, and mode.

School Memes Only Students Understand

In his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, British scientist Richard Dawkins defended his newly coined word meme, which he defined as “a unit of cultural transmission.” Having first considered, then rejected, mimeme, he wrote: “Mimeme comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like gene.” Like any good meme, meme caught on and evolved, eventually developing the meaning known to anyone who spends time online, where it’s most often used to refer to any one of those silly captioned photos that the Internet can’t seem to get enough of.
