Still Harris Worked Hard On Her Relationship With Her Stepkids
In an essay for Elle, the VP has shared that she put in a lot of effort to make sure her stepkids knew she respected them and could take whatever time they needed to get used to her.
“As a child of divorce, I knew how hard it could be when your parents start to date other people,” Harris wrote. “And I was determined not to insert myself in their lives until Doug and I had established we were in this for the long haul… Theres nothing worse than disappointing a child.”
She shared that the first time she met Cole and Ella she “picked up a tin of cookies and tied a ribbon in a bow around them,” but worried they might find the gesture “weird” or “too much.”
Apparently, though, they loved it.
She Entered Their Family At An Interesting Stage
Harris became stepmom to Cole and Ella about five years after Emhoffs divorce. Cole would have been around 14 at the time of his fathers divorce and Ella would have been 9, and these tend to be ages when children of divorce can be incredibly psychologically vulnerable. However, because the divorce was a mutual agreement between their parents the two seemed to have adapted to it well. Harris became their step-parent when Cole was 20 but Ella was still in her teens, which can still be a difficult time in a childs development for a step-parent to enter the equation. However, there seemed to have been little to no animosity and the two accepted Harris readily. It seems Emhoff raised two very emotionally mature children. Their mother, Kersten, was even an attendee of Harriss inauguration.

Aunties Serve A Special Purpose
However, Kamala isnt just a mother in her role as a stepparent. Shes also an aunt. Seeing her on stage with her grand-nieces reminded me of my relationship with my sister and her children. They stretched me to love in ways I never could have imagined long before my son was a notion. Being Auntie has given me the opportunity to find a special purpose in my family, one that allowed me to experience motherhood long before morning sickness and labor pains.
Kamalas lawyer, author, and activist niece Meena gave us a glimpse of the influence her history-making aunt has on her, her girls, and ultimately, young girls all over the world.
Mothers like Momala can still see you. Love you. Support you. And yes, mother you.
In the Harris household, ambition means courage, Meena wrote in an Elleessay. It means living your purpose. But to a whole lot of other people, ambitionwomens ambition, that isis code for taking up space that wasnt intended to be yours.
As my aunt showed uswhen we encourage ambitious girls, they become ambitious women, she continued. And ambitious women can break barriers, shatter ceilings, and win.
And win she did.
The kind of love and devotion Kamala has for her step-children and nieces isnt reserved just for biological mothers. Women like Kamala make a choice to be in the lives of children who arent theirs when they, by no means, HAD to.
