In an essay for Elle, the VP has shared that she put in a lot of effort to make sure her stepkids knew she respected them and could take whatever time they needed to get used to her.

“As a child of divorce, I knew how hard it could be when your parents start to date other people,” Harris wrote. “And I was determined not to insert myself in their lives until Doug and I had established we were in this for the long haul… Theres nothing worse than disappointing a child.”

She shared that the first time she met Cole and Ella she “picked up a tin of cookies and tied a ribbon in a bow around them,” but worried they might find the gesture “weird” or “too much.”

Apparently, though, they loved it.

She Entered Their Family At An Interesting Stage

Harris became stepmom to Cole and Ella about five years after Emhoffs divorce. Cole would have been around 14 at the time of his fathers divorce and Ella would have been 9, and these tend to be ages when children of divorce can be incredibly psychologically vulnerable. However, because the divorce was a mutual agreement between their parents the two seemed to have adapted to it well. Harris became their step-parent when Cole was 20 but Ella was still in her teens, which can still be a difficult time in a childs development for a step-parent to enter the equation. However, there seemed to have been little to no animosity and the two accepted Harris readily. It seems Emhoff raised two very emotionally mature children. Their mother, Kersten, was even an attendee of Harriss inauguration.

Emhoff and Harris have no children together, although he has two children, Cole and Ella, from a previous marriage.

He was married to Kerstin Emhoff for nearly 25 years prior to calling it quits.

Kamala Harris Has A Stepdaughter And A Stepson Thanks To Her Husband Doug Emhoff

Although Sen. Harris doesn’t have any biological children, she did gain two “bonus kids” when she married Doug Emhoff. She and Doug said, “I do,” on Aug. 22, 2014. Doug shares two children from his previous marriage to Kerstin Emhoff: a daughter named Ella and a stepson named Cole.

For an essay the California politician wrote for Elle in May 2019, Harris opened up about her stepdaughter and stepson and how she was embraced by them as a member of the family.

Kamalas father is Donald J. Harris, a retired economics professor from Stanford University. Her mother, Shyamala, was a breast cancer researcher, but sadly died of colon cancer in 2009 aged 70. The couple had split when Kamala was seven, with Shyamala winning custody of their daughters.

He had two children from his previous marriage, Cole, 27, and Ella, 22. They were named after John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald , Kamala wrote in an essay for Elle.
