Algebra has procedural rules which must be followed exactly in order to get a correct answer–line per line to balance an equation. The problem is, many eighth graders are in a profound, But WHY? stage. This cannot be ignored. Logic-age students want to understand the whys and wherefores of a procedure. They are not likely to submit without a debate. This is a useful practice for other subjects, such as science or English, but it halts the process of algebra.
Just follow the yellow brick road, I sometimes tell my sixth graders. In other words, follow the procedure even if you dont understand it now. Understanding will come down the road. But this goes against the grain of a middle schooler who has a propensity to question until they understand. Therefore, waiting until ninth grade when abstract visualization is easier just makes sense.

Where I live in Florida, a gifted honors class would learn in8th grade, a regular honors class would learn in 8th grade, and normally you would learn Algebra 1 in 9th grade.

Where i live in Pennsylvania, we do algebra 1 in 8th grade Aclass, pre-algebra in 8th B class, Algebra 1 in 8th Independentclass , finish Algebra1 in 8th A class, and finish pre-algebra in 8th B class. I was inthe 7th grade A class and the 8th grade Independent class, cause Iwas a freakin’ genius and got straight A’s every trimester of everygrade.
I go to a private school, and most private school classes arenaturally ahead of the public school systems’. In 7th grade, I tookPre-Algebra and now as I’m in eighth grade I take Algebra 1 and 2and have a test every other week.
But usually, as said before, Algebra 1 is normally taken byninth grade students in public school =)

What Math Do 10th Graders Take
However, in some schools, this course has been phased out in favor of algebra courses that teach some geometry along the way. In that case, you might take Algebra 2 in 10th grade.
A more advanced 10th grader may also take Algebra 2 or even a pre-calculus course. Of course, this depends on the students math background from 9th grade.
If a 10th grader has already taken the algebra prerequisites, an elective course such as probability or statistics is also possible.

My Student Is Going Into 9th Grade And Taking Pre
Instead of Biology, Dr. Shormann recommends DIVE Earth Science which can be used as a high school science credit. Then, take ICP in 10th grade, Biology in 11th grade, and Chemistry in 12th grade.
Earth Science will be easier than Biology and allow your student more time to “catch up” in math. The math sections of the SAT and PSAT are half of the score. So math should be the priority.

Will My Child Be Ready For College Math
Wont waiting on Algebra I until 9th grade prevent my child from completing important college preparatory math courses? Not at all. A high schooler will still have opportunity to take a pre-Calculus class in 12th grade. More importantly, their foundation in algebra will be well established, ensuring a greater level of success in each subsequent math course.

How Should The Decision Be Made As To Which Math My Child Should Take
There are four indicators that can be used to determine which math course is right for your child:
1) a placement test
3) current grades
4) and most importantly, teacher recommendation.

Core Math Concepts Every 11th Grader Should Know
Still, no matter the level of aptitude a student has in mathematics, he or she is required to meet demonstrate a certain level of understanding of core concepts of the field including those associated with Algebra and Geometry as well as statistics and financial math.

Depending on the aptitude of the student for the field of mathematics, he or she may choose to enter one of three education tracks for the subject: remedial, average, or expedited, each of which offers its own path to learning the basic concepts needed for completion of the 11th grade.
Students taking the remedial course will have completed Pre-Algebra in the ninth grade and Algebra I in the 10th, meaning they would need to take either Algebra II or Geometry in 11th while students on the normal mathematics track will have taken Algebra I in the ninth grade and either Algebra II or Geometry in the 10th, meaning they would need to take the opposite during the 11th grade.
Advanced students, on the other hand, have already completed all of the subjects listed above by the end of the 10th grade and are thus ready to begin understanding the complex mathematics of Pre-Calculus.

As recently as 1990, taking algebra in eighth grade was unique. That has changed dramatically in recent years, and now more eighth graders take algebra than any other math class. Enrollment in eighth-grade algebraand in other advanced math classesvaries by state. This section of the Brown Center Report exploits that variation to study the relationship of states enrollment in advanced math classes and scores on NAEP. The research question is whether a relationship exists between changes in advanced math enrollments and changes in 8th grade NAEP scores. Do states that boost advanced enrollments experience a concurrent increase in achievement? A second analysis uses the same technique to look at the potential that advanced courses are being watered down. Are rising enrollments associated with lower mean achievement in advanced classes?
NAEP Data on Advanced Math Enrollment
Table 3-1 illustrates the steady increase of U.S. eighth-grade enrollment in advanced mathematics courses. The data are taken from the NAEP eighth-grade math assessment. Students are asked: what mathematics class are you taking this year? The category advanced mathematics combines several responses, including Algebra I, courses that stretch Algebra I content over two years , and courses that typically are more advanced than Algebra I, including Algebra II and Geometry. This amalgamated response is noisy and receives further discussion below.
