High School Students In Florida Have The Option To Graduate Early

A high school student in Florida can complete his or her education at an early age. Students are given the same diplomas as regular high school students under this policy. Every school district must establish a policy that allows for this option, and parents must be notified when their children are eligible to graduate early. In Florida, 24 credits, which include English/Language Arts and Math/Science, are required to graduate early. A 2.0 GPA is also required for students to graduate and take state tests. Make sure you read your schools handbook for any additional information on graduation requirements.

A Final Word About Science In High School

For any college or university, you will be in the best position if you have taken biology, chemistry, and physics. Even when a college requires just one or two years of science, your application will be stronger if you’ve taken courses in all three of those subject areas.

For the country’s most selective colleges, biology, chemistry, and physics represent the minimum requirements. Fine Visual Or Performing Arts

One-half credit or one trimester of study is required in the fine, visual or performing arts.

If completed in high school, the credit should be chosen from art appreciation, band, ceramics, choir, dance, dramatic performance and production, drawing, fiber arts, graphic arts, metal design, music appreciation, music theory, orchestra, painting, photography, print making or sculpture.

Courses generally not accepted include architecture, color guard, creative writing, drafting, drill team, fashion design, foreign languages, interior design, sewing, speech, woodworking and yearbook.

If made up through college coursework, one course, chosen from the following subjects, will satisfy the requirement. Two college credits are sufficient.

• Art, art history, cinema/filmmaking, dance, music photography
• Drama, except drama as literature courses
• Architectural history courses.

Selecting Your First Chemistry Course

Students who do not have AP, IB, or A-level credit for chemistry should take Chem 107 in the first semester and Chem 108 in the second semester.

Students who have fulfilled the AP, IB, or A-level requirements may place out of Chem 107 and/or Chem 108, whether they choose to use their credit or not. The requirements for AP, IB, and A-levels are found here. Due to the content covered in high school courses, we typically recommend that students with credit take Chem 107 and use their credit for Chem 108. However, students who feel they have a very strong background in chemistry may take Separation Science/Analytical Chemistry in the fall and/or Inorganic Chemistry in the winter of their first year. First-year students may not take Organic Chemistry .

Pre-health students: Most post-graduate health sciences programs require two semesters of college chemistry with a lab in addition to a year of organic chemistry. Since AP, IB, and A-level credit may not be used to meet this requirement, students with incoming credit should consider this carefully when deciding whether to take Chem 107/108. Both Inorganic Chemistry and Separation Science/Analytical Chemistry have an associated lab.

Im a junior this season and presently while altering my schedule to ensure that I dont need to take Chem. Im from NY, and our board of regents mandates that you are taking 2 regents exams and 1 additional science credit. Ive already taken the 2 regents exams, and scored a 95 and 96. Ive got a feeling Ill be terrible at Chem, and also to my relief, its apparently not needed. Im intending to take AP biology rather, which is my 3rd AP for that year. Some colleges list the science courses that they expect students to have completed in high school when stated, these courses usually include biology, chemistry, and/or physics. As you map out your high school curriculum, keep in mind that taking biology, chemistry, or physics at the advanced level will typically impress colleges more than earth science.
