Summer vacation has arrived in the desert! When school was still in session, we were counting the days for summer to begin. Now that it’s here, the kids are already bored. I don’t want the kids to forget everything they learned in school over the summer, so I created a fun math game to keep their multiplication and division facts fresh. Get ready for Multiplication Tic-Tac-Toe!
Multiplication Tic-Tac-Toe Math Game
The game is simple to play, and I’ve included game boards for advanced and beginner players. Kids can start with the beginner boards if they are still learning their facts, and then move to the advanced boards when they are more confident.
I’ve also included two ways to play. The first way focuses on multiplication, and the second way reviews division facts .
Instructions are included with the printables, but I’ll include them here as well.

Math Tic Tac Toe: Fun Way To Practice Mental Math
We love games and math games are even better! Tired of the old Tic Tac Toe game? Mix it up with some number sense and turn it into Math Tic Tac Toe! This basic math game is perfect for the early grades when kids are working on adding more than two numbers. It helps children practice mental math skills, which are crucial for math success in school. Kids will also have to use basic strategy skills because in order to win you really have to plan ahead.
I played this game as a fun math activity with both my 10 year old and my 7 year old, and it’s a good math activity for after school. Of course my older son caught on very quickly but I coached my younger son along until he was able to trick me once or twice
What you need:
- One playing board with a 3 by 3 grid.
- 9 tokens, numbered 1 – 9, preferably in 2 different colors, but not strictly necessary. We snagged some game pieces from Skippity, but you could use coins, too.
Objective:
Players take turns placing tokens on a single square in an attempt to create a row in which the numbers on the tokens adds up to 15. If you are the first to complete a row, even if it contains two different colors, you win!
As you can see in the photo above, the bottom row of 1-9-5 totals 15. The remaining 7 could be played in the upper right square to create a column of 15 on the far right.
Alternate Math Tic Tac Toe Version:
Continue to play even after one person has completed a row of 15, which may result in a tie game.

The only thing that wont fit in the file folder is a 12-sided math dice, or two regular dice. Kids can set up the game and play independently.

I would recommend this game for ages 6-7, or any child who needs to practice addition and subtraction facts.

Setting up the Game
The printable file has a tic-tac-toe board, a cover page, and 90 math problem cards.
I found some colorful file folders at Walmart. They have a clear pocket on the outside, which is perfect for holding the cover page! If your folders dont have a pocket, just tape or glue the cover page to the front of the folder.
I used a quart size freezer bag to hold the math cards, and I taped it to the inside of the file folder. Tape the game board on the other side of the folder.

I think Tic Tac Toe has absolutely nothing to do with math. except for counting and tallying, and maybe some small probability lessons when you play against a computer, or if you have kids that sit there and plan 12 moves ahead.if Tic Tac Toe can be classified as a math game. It also aims to see if tic tac toe has any value in todays curriculum .
Tic Tac Toe is part of a math unit I will be teaching soon. The students in this class are struggling readers and writers, which really limits what they can do. They are not ready for more abstract thinking problems yet. However, they need an opportunity to use their reasoning skills as well as their reading skills in order to be prepared for the MCAS.
The kids need to learn about what tic tac toe is before they can begin thinking about it mathematically. They dont know anything about it except that their parents used to play and that they are familiar with the rules of the game.

Control the corners. Most players go for the middle space whenever they can, but don’t ignore the corners! You can use the corners to set up multiple winning moves at once, leaving your opponent no way to block your win.
Watch your opponent. Take note of where they place their Os. Keep your eyes open for those winning spots so you can block them before they get three in a row.
Bigger grid, more space. The 5×5 grid can be quite the challenge. The rules are the same, except now youll be looking to get four in a row. Its best to control the center when playing on the bigger board. Since there are five squares in each row and column, putting your Xs three adjacent spots will give you two possible winning moves, leaving your opponent in a trap.
You are Xs and your opponent is Os. On your turn, click anywhere on the grid to place an X in that square. Your goal is to get three in a row before your opponent does. Try your skills getting four in a row on the 5×5 grid for an extra challenge. If things are still too easy, take it up a notch by switching to hard mode! You can play against a computer, or with a friend on the same computer.
