Instead, focus on the larger and more news-making countries to start, and spend your deliberate learning energies on the more important geography facts outlined above.

As a bonus, youre going to have an easier time with political boundaries once you know the landscape: many political boundaries fall along the lines of rivers, mountain ranges, or other natural features.

Were fans of the BrainBox games for their ability to teach trivia facts quickly with a brain training component. All Around the World is no exception. Players have 10 seconds to look at a card representing a country and memorize as much information as possible. After 10 seconds, the player rolls a dice and must answer a question on the back of the card that will quiz a particular fact like bordering countries, bordering waters, capital cities, flags, or cultural references.
Where in the World? includes 6 different playing versions some of which are card games and others that are board games. Each version helps children discover comprehensive facts about the geography of the world, while the most advanced version even includes a current events component. Children should be at least 3rd grade for the easier leveled-games. This one has enough difficulty variation to last your family many years.
There are four different game options in the Flags of the World card game. The version that works for children as young as six expects them to draw a flag card from the pile and attempt to guess which country it belongs to. In more the more difficult versions, players will not only be able to match flags with countries, but recognize factual clues about countries and remembering capital cities, too. This game is especially good to play during an Olympics year.

There are two types of geography: physical geography and human geography. Physical geography is the study of the earth’s physical characteristics and processes, including climate and weather systems, rock formations, oceans and the shifting of tectonic plates. Human geography, on the other hand, studies human societies how they’re formed, how they operate, and the struggles they face to thrive and survive. The branch of geography that most students will study at some point in their high school or college career is physical geography.

When youre talking about geography, you need to start with the big things: continents. The major landmasses of this planet are split up into continents. Knowing the names and locations of these is the first step in learning geography. Quick: can you name all 7 continents?
Dont forget that the Arctic isnt a continentthere isnt any land under that ice, just ocean . If you dont know your continents, study up! Get a good globe or atlas , and spend some time just browsing the planet. Learn the shape of the landscape and refer back to those continent names frequently until you have them down.
Also, pro tip: remember not to refer to Africa as a country! It’s a continent.
A Basic Familiarity With The State And Capital Names
You don’t have to know which ones go together. And you don’t have to know where these places are–you just have to recognize that Tallahassee is a place. You might also know that Miami is a place, and you might not know which is a capital, but at least you can pronounce the words. If you’re an American adult, you already know intuitively that it’s “Florida,” not “Flopowillow.”
However, if you’re hearing these words for your first time, and you have to learn the names themselves, this will take a little longer. If that’s you, I recommend searching youtube to find your favorite State Capitals song. I like this one, and my kids like this rap, or there’s this classic catchy tune by the Animaniacs! If you’re part of Classical Conversations, the state capitals song they’ve created is ideal because it goes in the same east-to-west order we learn them in Cycle 3.
Once you’re familiar with the names of the states and capitals, you’re ready for this exercise. Let’s memorize where all these places are!

Another method that can be very effective when studying history may be a surprising one watch movies! There are fantastic films and documentaries available which depict historical events. The great thing about these is that they are entertaining , while at the same time educational. Before you sit down with a bowl of popcorn in hand though, make sure that the film is true to historical fact. Unfortunately, sometimes Hollywood goes a little mental and takes liberties with history. Bad news: Braveheart isnt historically correct.

If you just want to learn about the world and where everything is, buy a big 3-foot world map and hang it on a wall somewhere. Refer to it every time you see something in the news about X country and eventually it’ll begin to sink in.
I suggest this but with a globe. I am unhappy with most 2D representations of the earth.
It’s got single player and multiplayer. World, europe, US. It gives you the name of the city or country, you click on the map, it tells you how many miles off you are. If you played for a few hours a day, I’d say you’d have a decent grasp of geography in a few weeks.
