Thermodynamics And Statistical Mechanics

The first chapter of The Feynman Lectures on Physics is about the existence of atoms, which Feynman considered to be the most compact statement of physics, from which science could easily result even if all other knowledge was lost. By modeling matter as collections of hard spheres, it is possible to describe the kinetic theory of gases, upon which classical thermodynamics is based.

Thermodynamics studies the effects of changes in temperature, pressure, and volume on physical systems on the macroscopic scale, and the transfer of energy as heat. Historically, thermodynamics developed out of the desire to increase the efficiency of early steam engines.

The starting point for most thermodynamic considerations is the laws of thermodynamics, which postulate that energy can be exchanged between physical systems as heat or work. They also postulate the existence of a quantity named entropy, which can be defined for any system. In thermodynamics, interactions between large ensembles of objects are studied and categorized. Central to this are the concepts of system and surroundings. A system is composed of particles, whose average motions define its properties, which in turn are related to one another through equations of state. Properties can be combined to express internal energy and thermodynamic potentials, which are useful for determining conditions for equilibrium and spontaneous processes.

Relation of Biology with Other Sciences

Biology constitutes the relation with every aspect of human and every sciences. The study of biology needs experiences of almost all the branches of science including chemistry, physics, sociology, geology, climatology etc.

    Relation of biology with chemistry

    • Metabolism is the chemical reaction occurring in living organisms. The synthesis of a complex organic compound from raw materials is called anabolism. The breaking down of the complex substance into a simpler form called catabolism. Metabolism includes anabolic and catabolic activities which are purely chemical phenomenon.
    • Living organisms have organic and inorganic chemical substances which influence the life of living organism.
    • DNA, RNA are the genetic materials which are also made up of a chemical substance.
    • Energy transferred to the body by the organic chemical substance like protein, fats, carbohydrate etc.
    • Enzymes, hormones, and other body fluids are exclusively chemical substance.
    • Mutation, variation, genetic recombination etc are of chemical basis.

    Physics And Other Disciplines

    Chemistry, Matter, and Measurement

Physics is the foundation of many important disciplines and contributes directly to others. Chemistry deals with the interactions of atoms and molecules, so it is rooted in atomic and molecular physics. Most branches of engineering are applied physics. In architecture, physics is at the heart of structural stability and is involved in acoustics, heating, lighting, and the cooling of buildings. Parts of geology rely heavily on physics, such as the radioactive dating of rocks, earthquake analysis, and heat transfer in the Earth. Some disciplines, such as biophysics and geophysics, are hybrids of physics and other disciplines.

Physics in Chemistry: The study of matter and electricity in physics is fundamental towards the understanding of concepts in chemistry, such as the covalent bond.

Physics has many applications in the biological sciences. On the microscopic level, it helps describe the properties of cell walls and cell membranes. On the macroscopic level, it can explain the heat, work, and power associated with the human body. Physics is involved in medical diagnostics, such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging , and ultrasonic blood flow measurements. Medical therapy sometimes directly involves physics: cancer radiotherapy uses ionizing radiation, for instance. Physics can also explain sensory phenomena, such as how musical instruments make sound, how the eye detects color, and how lasers can transmit information.

    Physics And Its Scope

Physics is the branch of science related to the study of basic laws of nature and their manifestations concerned with the different natural phenomena. It is also referred to as the fundamental science because it constrains all the other significant branches of the sciences. It can be considered to be the study of the physical world and matter along with its motion through space and time. It also pertains to the concepts of energy and force as well.

Physics consist of two principal types of approaches :

  • Unification- Different constraints are applied to all the phenomena occurring together as a collection of universal laws in different domains in the world. It is an attempt to unify various laws and combine to carry out an activity. It is based on trial and process. For instance, both electric and magnetic phenomena are governed by electromagnetic laws.
  • Reduction-

Definition Of Terms: Model Theory Law

In colloquial usage, the terms model, theory, and law are often used interchangeably or have different interpretations than they do in the sciences. In relation to the study of physics, however, each term has its own specific meaning.

The laws of nature are concise descriptions of the universe around us. They are not explanations, but human statements of the underlying rules that all natural processes follow. They are intrinsic to the universe humans did not create them and we cannot change them. We can only discover and understand them. The cornerstone of discovering natural laws is observation science must describe the universe as it is, not as we may imagine it to be. Laws can never be known with absolute certainty, because it is impossible to perform experiments to establish and confirm a law in every possible scenario without exception. Physicists operate under the assumption that all scientific laws and theories are valid until a counterexample is observed. If a good-quality, verifiable experiment contradicts a well-established law, then the law must be modified or overthrown completely.

  • Electrodynamics- The branch of physics dealing with rapidly changing electric and magnetic fields. It also pertains to the understanding of the particle motion and interactions produced within the variable fields. Maxwell devised numerous laws that are concerned with the motion of electric fields and their attributes.
  • Optics- The branch of physics dealing with the behavior and the interactions of light with each other. It can be used to simulate the construction of devices used to visualize and detect the aspects and components of light. It takes into account both ray and wave optics. It involves concepts related to the formation of images and the working of topics of reflection, refraction as well as diffraction.

What Is The Relationship Of Chemistry With Other Sciences

The Chemistry relates to other sciences So it is said that it is a multidisciplinary discipline within the scientific field. Among its links are physics, mathematics, biochemistry and astronomy, among others.

Initially, all the studies that had to do with the environment that surrounds us was known as natural sciences. The relation of these matters allows us to explain the complex phenomena that happen in nature.

With the specialization of the fields, these were specializing and acquiring the name of science themselves.

The first four major fields of natural sciences to specialize were the physical , the chemistry , the biology and the geology . With the passage of time the studies of each of the sciences were delimited and new sciences appeared that were more specialized like biochemistry, biophysics, geochemistry, etc.

The greatest relationship of chemistry is with physics. The interaction between them was very important in the development of atomic theory.

The rules of materials found in nature were explained by quantum mechanics, so theoretical chemistry really is theoretical physics.

Physics In Relation To Other Sciences

Physics in relation to other branches of science

Physics is a very significant branch of science that plays a crucial role in understanding the developments pertaining to the other branches of science, such as Chemistry, Biology, etc.

  • Physics in relation to Mathematics. The study of physical variables involved in the study of mathematics has led to the discovery of ideas of differentiation, integration, and differential equations involved in the estimation of quantities. Theories in physics and derivations in mathematics coexist with each other. Math is considered to be a deterministic tool for the development of modern theoretical physics. It provides a way to formulate and evaluate experimental results.

    Biology And Physics Working Together

Physics provides the basis for biology. Without space, matter, energy and time — components that make up the universe — living organisms would not exist. Physicist Richard Feynman said that everything on earth is made of atoms, basic units of matter, that constantly move. Since biology has its foundation in physics, it applies physical natural laws to the study of living organisms, according to Muskegon Community College. For instance, physics helps explain how bats use sound waves to navigate in the dark and how wings give insects the ability to move through the air. The American Physical Society shares that many flowers arrange their seeds or petals in a Fibonacci-like sequence to maximize exposure to light and nutrients. In some cases, biology helps prove physical laws and theories. Feynman states that biology helped scientists come up with the law of conservation of energy.

How Did It Get That Way

In order for physics to be useful to other sciences in atheoretical way, other than in the invention of instruments, thescience in question must supply to the physicist a description of theobject in a physicists language. They can say why does a frogjump?, and the physicist cannot answer. If they tell him what a frogis, that there are so many molecules, there is a nerve here, etc., thatis different. If they will tell us, more or less, what the earth or thestars are like, then we can figure it out. In order for physical theoryto be of any use, we must know where the atoms are located. In order tounderstand the chemistry, we must know exactly what atoms are present, for otherwise we cannot analyze it. That is but one limitation, ofcourse.

There is no historical question being studied in physics at the presenttime. We do not have a question, Here are the laws of physics, how didthey get that way? We do not imagine, at the moment, that the laws ofphysics are somehow changing with time, that they were different in thepast than they are at present. Of course they may be, and themoment we find they are, the historical question of physics willbe wrapped up with the rest of the history of the universe, and then thephysicist will be talking about the same problems as astronomers, geologists, and biologists.
