However, studies have shown that fostering creativity is key to growing future success. Students should choose a creative class that will help them see the world from a different perspective.

Students who like performing or who see themselves as a performer, or even a lawyer, as their future career should take Drama I. Some classes even build theatrical sets, giving students the chance to exercise their visual creativity as well as their performance skills.

Some of the best electives to take in high school are foreign languages. Not only is high school foreign language required for many college applications; foreign language helps students see their worlds from a more global perspective. Studying a foreign language fosters cultural understanding. It helps students develop higher-level speaking and writing skills, too.

Some classes offer vocational courses as electives, too. Students can take these ninth grade electives, and by the time they finish high school, they will have a certification in a real-world skill. For example, some schools offer courses that help students become certified nursing assistants.

Eleventh grade math is advanced and students will have to know and understand linear equations, first degree inequalities, functions, quadratic equations and polynomial expressions. Students will also learn to manipulate polynomials, rational expressions, and exponential expressions. Often in eleventh grade the concept of the Remainder Theorem, the Factor Theorem, and the Rational Root Theorem are taught but in some states this is not brought in until 12th grade. The High School Math Courses You Should Take

Choosing which math classes to study can be one of the most challenging parts of planning your high school schedule. High schools offer numerous math classes, often at varying degrees of difficulty, and it can be difficult to know which math classes will be the best for you and your future.

Stop Splitting Up Students So Much And Dont Hasten The Curriculum

    11th Grade Math – MathHelp.com – 1000 Online Math Lessons

Over the years, some schools have sought to raise math achievement by pushing algebra down to eighth grade. High-flying students may adapt and have;room to take more advanced high school classes. Hastening the curriculum can widen the gulf in achievement between lower-performing students, including those who are economically disadvantaged and racial minorities.

The practice reflects a long-standing feature of American math education: As early as middle school, students are often split into “tracks”;in ways that predetermine who will take advanced classes in high school. The advanced classes are often full of students who are;white or Asian and attend suburban schools while black and Latino students continue to be underrepresented, research shows.

About six years ago, San Franciscos school leaders sought to tackle the problem. They halted;teaching algebra I in eighth grade. Students take the same three-year sequence of math courses in middle school, and everyone is enrolled in;mixed-ability classrooms, said Lizzy Hull Barnes, math supervisor at the San Francisco Unified School District.

In high school, all students take ninth grade algebra and 10th grade geometry. After that, students can choose their path: Some may pick algebra II, others may choose a course combining algebra II and pre-calculus. Some;may accelerate to AP statistics.

Its been a seismic shift, Barnes said.

For some kids, junior year is time to get serious. For those who have been serious all along, its important to avoid burnout and stay focused.

    Reality hits them in the face, says Vanessa Gomez-Lee, a counselor at Valley View High School in Moreno Valley, Calif. They say, Its my junior year, and I have two years to get my act together.;

Among the milestones you can expect in 11th grade: Your child will take the SAT or the ACTfor the first but not the last timeand will start working on a list of potential colleges or other post-high school opportunities. He may get his first part-time job. As a parent, you may have the first of many panic attacks as your child gets his drivers license.

Academically, 11th grade is the most rigorous yet for students aiming for selective colleges. Many load up with Advanced Placement and honors courses. Others will be tempted to improve their chances of a perfect GPA by taking easier courses. This is a mistake, counselors warn. Students should stay on the path they started, taking the right courses for their post-high school plans and getting the best grades they can.

Your junior-year grades are the last grades colleges will have to compute your GPA, Gomez-Lee says.

Which Math Classes Will Colleges Expect You To Have Taken

Like high schools, most colleges require applicants to have completed three years of math and recommend four years. Selective colleges often require four years of math, and some schools may also require the completion of particular math classes like algebra 2, geometry, or pre-calculus.

For students planning on majoring in humanities, the social sciences, or a similar field, the math classes you took in high school will not be as important to colleges because they’ll be looking more at the classes that relate to your intended major. This means you don’t have to take the most challenging math classes your high school offers, although colleges want fundamentally talented and well-rounded people, so you should still aim to do well in the math classes you do take in order to maintain a solid GPA.

If you plan on majoring in a STEM field , expectations will be higher because math skills will be more critical to your college courses and future career. Most colleges will require you to have taken four years of math in high school, sometimes including pre-calculus and calculus. You’ll be competing for college offers with many other smart STEM people, so you’ll want to help yourself stand out by taking rigorous math classes that are offered at a high level.

    Standard High School Math Curriculum

Most high schools require students to take three years of math in order to graduate and recommend taking four years. These requirements often also include completing an algebra class and a geometry class.

Forty-five states have agreed to follow Common Core standards for math, which aim to create a more standardized math curriculum across the country. The Common Core standards state that six content categories should be covered in high school math classes:

    • Algebra
    • Pre-Calculus
    • Calculus

However, this order is definitely not set in stone. Some schools teach algebra 1 and 2 back-to-back then move on to geometry, some schools include trigonometry with geometry or pre-calculus instead of algebra 2, and some students take pre-algebra or a similar course if they need to strengthen their math skills before taking algebra 1. However, most high schools follow a course order similar to the one above for their math classes.

The math class you take freshman year will be chosen based on your previous math classes and any placement tests you may have taken before starting high school. So, if you already took algebra 1 in 8th grade, you may be able to start with geometry as a freshman and continue down the list from there. Also, not every high school student takes pre-calculus or calculus.
