How Is The Money And Job Security For Chemistry Careers

Why I Love Biology

Like biology careers, jobs for chemists are also on the rise, with a predicted 4% growth through 2028, according to the BLS. That should add up to about 3,500 jobs added to the U.S. economy over 10 years. Some of the fastest-growing positions are registered nurses and food scientists .

The value of a career in chemistry is just as dependent on time in school and experience as one in biology, but unlike biologists where medicine is the most secure path, the most secure jobs for chemists are in supplying to pharmaceutical companies. Drug manufacturers are the biggest employers of chemists in the United States, according to Data USA, with more than 300,000 employees in this country making an average annual salary of more than $104K.;

Government jobs are harder to come by, as you might imagine, and pay closer to an average salary over $114K. There are also successful careers to be had in architecture and engineering , research , and manufacturing of non-health-related chemicals .

You Can Use Its Principles To Answer Big Questions

People often think about the sciences as being all facts and figures, yet it is these evidence-based subjects that help us to question all else in this world.

By understanding facts surrounding what is physically and anatomically possible, budding scientists can apply these principles again and again as they begin to question things that intrigue them: for example, if an afterlife truly exists, whether the Big Bang Theory could ever be a reliable concept, or if the story of Adam and Eve could be biologically possible.

Explains The Changes Of The Human Bodies

Humans beings are scientifically known as home sapiens. They have similar characteristics with apes but are more developed in terms of body shape and erection, speech, and reasoning. And being considered as the highest form of animals, humans have bodies that are complicated to comprehend.

But by studying biology, everyone will know the reasons behind the sudden changes happening in their respective bodies. For instance, when kids unexpectedly grow taller and they experience changes in their physical appearances and sleeping patterns, these mean that their bodies have started releasing hormones in preparation for their puberty stage.

Biology explains why such circumstances happen and how the bodies produce the natural substances, preventing anyone from thinking that there is something wrong with their own bodies.

Also, the importance of biology has produced the scientific branch called Pathology, which studies the different kinds of diseases and how they affect the bodies of both humans and animals. It can also develop or discover new medications that will alleviate some health conditions without medicines yet.

Gaining Internship And Work Experience As A Biology Major

Many students work at internships to build up their resumes before graduation. For biology majors, this can be in corporate or academic labs, field research, hospitals, and the like. Career-building work experience is available for ambitious students: the biology department at the University of Utah, for example, keeps an available, and Louisiana State University regularly compiles research experience opportunities for science-major undergraduates. The Career Center at the University of Kansas has a section devoted to resources and opportunities for students studying the biological sciences; Ole Miss has a similar resource especially for biomedical sciences.

Of course, you do not have to research opportunities on your own. Many Shorelight universities offer a Career Accelerator Program that prepares students for professional opportunities while they study. CAP includes resume prep, finding internship opportunities, and job interviewing skills. This valuable training helps students prepare for entering the workforce after graduation.

After graduation, many biology majors spend a few years working before deciding whether to pursue an advanced degree in biology, such as an MD or PhD. Potential employers look for a combination of academic and internship experience from biology majors, so developing both is key to being a competitive candidate for top biology jobs and graduate programs.

Whos A Good Fit For The Bachelors In Biology

It would be misleading to suggest that in order to succeed in the field of biology, a person must have a defined set of personal characteristics or traits. Thats simply not the case. Every person out there working in the field or pursuing a bachelors in biology is an individual with unique strengths, talents, background, and professional goals.

That being said, there are personal skills and characteristics that do contribute to a person being drawn to biology and thriving in any of the professions to which a degree can ultimately lead. For instance, while youll find many biologists who work primarily in outdoor settings and personally enjoy being out in the field, youll find others who arent interested in the outdoors and instead prefer spending a majority of their time in an indoor lab setting. At NU, Dr. Maxwell estimates around a 50/50 split among undergraduate biology majors who prefer working outdoors to those who would rather spend time inside the lab.

Still, it helps to be aware of at least some of the broader characteristics and areas of interest that can contribute to a persons ability to succeed in biology. Some of these include:

Being A Biology Major Is Challenging

I often times spend many nights in the library in a given week. My fellow biology majors and I are typically the stressed students you will see in the library at 3 a.m. writing lab reports, studying piles of worn flashcards, drawing horrifically detailed notes for anatomy, or crying over a general chemistry or OChem textbook. Many biology courses demand a student memorize large chunks of information and it takes a lot of studying to make sure our brains actually encode what we are expected to know. If being a biology major was easy for me, I wouldnt find it rewarding and I would not be pursuing a degree in this field. However, it is a challenge and I find it to be a very rich and adventurous one that is worth any perceived pains, turmoil, or lack of sleep. If it didnt challenge me, it wouldnt change me. At the end of the day, biology is the area Id love be an expert in!

    General Biology Vs Biology Subfields

General biology degrees are quite popular because they provide the broadest base of knowledge in this diverse area of study. You can frequently find these listed as “general biology” or “biological sciences.”

General biology degrees can be good choices for people who want to keep their options open as they advance their studies. They may also be good for students interested in joining the medical field.

If your interests are strongly drawn to a specific area, however, you may want to consider specializing. Think about what types of jobs you’re interested in, and see which types of biology degrees are most popular for people who have those jobs. It may be hard to get a job as an epidemiologist with a general biology degree, for example, when most professionals have a graduate degree specifically in epidemiology.

What Kind Of Job Can I Get By Studying Biology

Jobs for graduates with a degree in biology can be just as diverse as the nature of the study. Aside from working in a lab, many biologists find themselves in other closely related fields, such as agriculture, food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, health care, research and development and more.

Undergraduate Vs Graduate Degrees In Biology

The next question to consider is how far you should take your education. Not all degrees are available at all levels of study. For example, epidemiology degrees are only available as graduate degrees, as are veterinary degrees. It’s common for people to choose a broad biology degree, such as general biology, for their undergrad and then specialize in a more specific topic as they advance, but this isn’t always the case.

A good question to ask yourself is where you’d like to end up. For example, if you want to be a professor of virology or a surgeon, you’ll need to get an advanced graduate degree. Alternatively, if you’d rather just work in the lab and leave all the grant-writing or patient-handling to others, you may be better off earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Increasing your level of education often leads to a higher salary, but it can also make you overqualified for some roles and limit your options. It can sometimes be tough to get a foothold with an advanced degree because the number of positions available may be relatively small. This is where networking can help set you apart from your competition.

If your network is small, consider enrolling in for-credit internship and practicum experiences while youre in school.

Based on these numbers, your chances of finding a job as a nurse are probably much greater than your chances of finding a job as a wildlife biologist.
