Appointments: Do I Start By Making An Appointment

No appointment is necessary for your initial visit. Students are encouraged to visit CAPS for an initial assessment between 9:00 am – 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm Monday – Thursday or 9:30 – 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm on Friday. These first-time assessments are helpful for a variety of reasons. Students are able to talk to a mental health professional on the day that they want help, rather than waiting for an appointment, while having the opportunity to share their stories and understand more about CAPS resources. This is the first step to connecting to CAPS for services.

Students are welcome to call CAPS 24/7 at 919-966-3658. Calling outside of office hours will connect students with a trained mental health professional who can assist with concerns in that moment, and remind students who want ongoing treatment to connect with CAPS during initial assessment hours.

Changes From Previous Caps For Dsm

Clothing & Accessories Hats & Caps Beechfield Junior ...

Several important revisions were made to the CAPS in updating it for DSM-5:

  • CAPS for DSM-IV asked respondents to endorse up to three traumatic events to keep in mind during the interview. CAPS-5 requires the identification of a single index trauma to serve as the basis of symptom inquiry.
  • CAPS-5 is a 30-item questionnaire, corresponding to the DSM-5 diagnosis for PTSD. The language of the CAPS-5 reflects both changes to existing symptoms and the addition of new symptoms in DSM-5. CAPS-5 asks questions relevant to assessing the dissociative subtype of PTSD , but no longer includes other associated symptoms .
  • As with previous versions of the CAPS, CAPS-5 symptom severity ratings are based on symptom frequency and intensity . However, CAPS-5 items are rated with a single severity score in contrast to previous versions of the CAPS which required separate frequency and intensity scores.
  • General instructions and scoring information are included with the CAPS-5.

Therapist Credentials: What Do All Those Letters Mean

For Professionals / For Professionals: Eleanor Haley

For further articles on these topics:

Sometimes I feel like I need a decoder ring to understand therapist credentials. You too? Seriously, who knew?

Should you even care about all those letters? Are they important? Is it just a way to make therapists feel important? Good questions! Basically, those letters are just identifiers to let you know what kind of education, license, and certifications a therapist has. This is one factor you may choose to take into consideration when searching for the mental health professional whos right for you.

A little while ago Litsa put together a super helpful guide for understanding mental health credentials and were posting it here for you to use as a reference. If you are looking for a therapist or counselor, have previously searched for one, or are open to the possibility of some day seeing one, this post should prove helpful. Though this is not an exhaustive list, it should be a pretty good place to start with knowing what those letters mean.

Our Pledge Of Support

What is MEDICAL PSYCHOLOGY? What does MEDICAL PSYCHOLOGY mean? MEDICAL PSYCHOLOGY meaning

CAPS would like to express our pledge of support to our students, to the campus community, and to the community as a whole as actions of hatred and threats of violence continue to occur in the world around us. CAPS stands by all communities who are targets for oppression, aggression, microaggressions, and discrimination. Particularly now, as Black lives continue to be targeted and Police Officers are being retaliated against, it is essential that we come together as a community to promote civil discourse and respect. CAPS at the University of the Pacific condemns the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless others who have died as a result of this unjust and inequitable system.

When our community is shaken by tragic or abhorrent events on campus or beyond, the CAPS staff wants to acknowledge the impact of these events on the students we serve, and the faculty and staff with whom we work. As believers in every human beings potential for healing and growth, we hold firm the values of inclusion, multicultural diversity, multicultural humility, and social justice. We believe in empowering all people, including those who are marginalized and oppressed, to act together peacefully, to challenge injustice, to condemn discrimination, and to promote a common humanity of equitable treatment and social cooperation.

You will be safe. You will be respected. You will be heard.

As advancements are made and plans develop, our top priority will remain the health, safety, and well-being of our community, on and off campus. We are planning for several contingencies and taking informed actions to limit the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring the continuity and availability of our services. We remain committed to our mission of providing timely, culturally responsive, and effective mental health services to our diverse UCSB student body, as well as professional consultation to faculty, staff, and families.

Support For The Asian/asian American Community

We at CAPS stand with and are in support of all Asian and Asian American students and community members. We are saddened by, and strongly condemn recent acts of racist-motivated intimidation, bullying, microaggressions, harassment, and verbal and physical attacks against Asian and Asian American community members. Sadly, the public health emergency spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic has been exploited to foster racism, ethnic scapegoating, and xenophobia. We recognize that these acts of prejudice have caused significant harm to our Asian and Asian American communities. CAPS and CSUSB strongly embrace inclusion and belonging for all peoples. If you have been impacted by this climate of intolerance, CAPS is here to support you. We offer same-day appointments as well as ongoing support to students. If you are experiencing distress and would like someone to talk to, we are here to listen.

Limitations: Is There A Session Limit For How Much Someone Can Be Seen At Caps

CAPS got rid of session limits years ago.

All students and post-docs are eligible for an initial evaluation. The initial evaluation helps us determine what the best treatment option will be for each student’s individual needs. CAPS generally provides short-term counseling because that is the format appropriate for most of the students who seek help at CAPS. In some cases, longer-term counseling or specialized therapy is in the students best interest, and a referral will be made to an outside provider.

Are You A Hero Positive Psychological Capital Explained

What is DIFFERENTIAL PSYCHOLOGY? What does DIFFERENTIAL PSYCHOLOGY mean?

Since it´s formulation at the onset of the new millennium, researchers have tried to apply Positive Psychology to organizational settings. E.g., Adam Grant promotes pro-social behavior in business settings, Amy Wrzesniewski looks at how employees can foster meaning via job-crafting, and Jane Dutton investigates the impact of high-quality connections.

Another interesting framework is offered by Fred Luthans and his colleagues. They have developed the idea of Positive Psychological Capital which is seen as a valuable extension to the concepts of economic, human, and social capital . PsyCap is theorized as a higher-order construct that is composed of four underlying constructs, precisely Self-Efficacy , Hope, Optimism, and Resiliency. It´s called higher-order because PsyCap is not just made of the underlying constructs, but taken together, they form something new, an entity that is more than the sum of its parts. Please see diagram at the bottom, based on Luthans & Youssef . This shows the whole framework, precisely: the H.E.R.O. formation by which the constructs is sometimes known to the general public. What are the building blocks all about as defined in Positive Psychology?

Why were these four concepts chosen? In the words of Luthans et al. :

The four psychological capacities of confidence, hope, optimism, and resilience are measurable, open to development, and can be managed for more effective work performance.

Why should you care ?

Child Abuse Potential Inventory

Psychologists are often asked to evaluate and to provide testimony about parental capacity. The Child Abuse Potential Inventory, a measure originally designed to screen parents for child physical abuse risk, is frequently used as a measure of general parental capacity. The CAP Inventory is a 160-item, forced-choice self-report questionnaire. It contains a 77-item physical abuse scale, six descriptive factor scales , and three validity scales . The three validity scales are used in different combinations to form three response distortion indexes . The CAP Inventory also contains two special scales: the ego-strength and loneliness scales. The Inventory has been translated into more than 25 languages, including multiple Spanish translations. Although the available data on the translated versions of the CAP Inventory are generally positive, the amount of published data on the reliability and validity of the CAP Inventory translations is highly variable.
