In 2006, an aspiring PhD candidate was fascinated with the idea that some people seem to be grittier than others. Her exploration started after deciding to become a 7th-grade math teacher several years earlier. She noticed that some students appeared to have the ability to tackle long-term challenges better than others, regardless of IQ scores.
You probably have heard of Angela Lee Duckworth and her work around grit and resilience. In case you have not or need a reminder, here is her 2013 TED talk, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.
Duckworth et al. define grit this way:
Grit is the tendency to sustain interest in and effort toward very long-term goals.
People are born with various levels of grit, but Duckworth contends that it is a trait that develops through experience. One key to improving it, as she points out in her TED talk, is by shifting your mindset from a fixed to a growth orientation.
Because grit is about intense passion for a particular goal, people can demonstrate it in one area, but not others. Those other areas might require self-control, but not grit. Duckworth provides the example of completing your taxes by April 15th.
Grit is about sustained, consistent effort toward a goal even when we struggle, falter, or temporarily fail.
Grit is the engine that moves us toward our goal. Resilience is the oil that keeps the engine moving.

Who Came Up With The Concept Of Grit
Psychologist Angela Duckworth brought the concept of grit to the public, providing evidence that talent and luck arent all that matter for succeeding in a challenging institutional context. Duckworth has defined grit as the passionate pursuit of long-term goals. She and her colleagues published research in 2007 introducing the Grit Scale, which they used to analyze educational achievement, persistence at a military academy, and success in a spelling bee.

In this regard, the PISA Report, which assesses academic performance among teenagers around the world, is giving increasing weight to non-cognitive abilities, and shows that this does not only apply to the best students, but also those who stand out for their determination. The language we use to describe grit and self-control words like character or personality trait — may connote to some immutability. However, it is now well-established that traits change across the life course. So, while there is enough stability to traits to sensibly describe one individual as grittier than another, it is also true that children and adults change their habitual patterns of interacting with the world as they accumulate additional life experience.

I cant tell you whether happiness or achievement is more important. Thats a question of values, not science. I can say that when you measure both, you find they tend to go together more than they split apart. In other words, while we can all think of someone we know who is happy but not successful, or successful but unhappy, these are exceptions. The grit paragons Ive interviewed over the years are on the whole quite happy and successful. While I would not call them carefree or laid back, I would say that they are tremendously satisfied with their liveseven if that includes never being satisfied with their level of skill or achievement. I myself think, daily, about what I could do better. And yet Im happy.

It is therefore essential to carry out investigations on the incremental validity of triarchic model of grit and revised model of grit on retention outcomes in different domains of performance .
