Can You Pass An Eighth Grade Arithmetic Test From 1908

Last week saw the release of the 2015 Nations Report Card scores in reading and math. When it comes to math, Americans were appalled to learn that only 25% of high school seniors are proficient in the subject.

Unfortunately, things arent all that much better for students in 8th grade. In 2015, only 33% of 8th graders scored proficient in math after answering questions like the ones below:

These questions are interesting, especially in light of the arithmetic exam 8th grade students took a century ago. The quiz below is taken from a 1908 examination booklet prepared by the Minnesota State High School Board. Students were expected to pass this exam without a calculator, mind you before being admitted to high school.

If todays students were required to take the 1908 examination, do you think math proficiency would be even lower than 33%? Is it time to raise the bar on rigor in modern education?

Is The Staar Test Difficult

The entire STAAR test is designed to be passable, but it is difficult to score full points. Therefore, if you are well-prepared and have revised all the topics beforehand, you should not find the STAAR test extremely difficult.

However, there will be challenging parts to the test. Each test is divided into three sections:

  • The easy concept-based questions
  • The regular application questions
  • The advanced questions

Normally, the simple questions are straightforward and relevant to the basic concepts taught in books. There is not much critical thinking needed to process this part. All you need is to memorize the book.

The application questions will dive into the concepts taught in the academic year by transforming them into scenario-based questions. For example, in the math exam, you will be given a scenario where the use of an algebraic formula is needed to solve the problem. These questions test the proficiency of a student in certain topics. Once you are familiar with the subject, these questions are not difficult.

Finally, there will be a few questions that are fairly challenging. The application of knowledge learned is not directly hinted at. Upon the first glimpse, it is not clear how the question relates to anything that you have learned. Students will have to work around the materials they have mastered and creatively come up with a way to solve those questions.

As mentioned, some of the questions that you will encounter are based on current social issues. Take the time to read about the newspapers every day. Find out what is going on in society that relates to some of the topics discussed and taught.

Being well-informed about current affairs gives you an advantage when answering those questions. You can even come up with more information than given in the question to gain additional points.

How To Prepare For The 8th Grade Staar Math Test

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness is developed under the supervision of the Texas Education Agency and is taken by all public school students in Texas, grades 312. The tests measure the progress of students from 3rd grade to 8th grade, as well as high school. STAAR is the states testing program and is based on state curriculum standards in core subjects including:

Students take STAAR tests in the spring. The number of tests a student takes each year will depend on what grade he or she is in. Most students will have two to four testing days during a school year.

Additional Considerations Regarding Grade Level Acceleration

  • Social maturity When advancing a course, your childs social and emotional maturity may not match the maturity level of the other students in the course.
  • Student desire– A student should have the desire and drive to accelerate and maintain the workload of the higher level class.
  • Teacher/counselor recommendation– Teachers and counselors see your student on a daily basis and may be able to provide additional information regarding whether or not acceleration would be appropriate.
  • Students may take an Exam for Acceleration during any of the four testing windows. However, placement in a new grade level will only occur at the start of a school year, regardless of when an EA is taken. All four content areas tests must have been completed and passed before the first day of school in order to accelerate.

If you do not want your student to accelerate or are not sure you want him/her to accelerate, your child should not take EAs
    • Depending on the testing vendor, scoring takes 4 to 6 weeks.

    Read The Instructions Carefully

Some questions are not as straightforward and require your logical and creating-thinking skills. For example, a question that asks you to interpret the core message in a passage means you have to paraphrase the main ideas conveyed instead of highlighting the opening or closing paragraph.

Read the instructions twice if possible to make sure you do not misunderstand the question. If you are unsure about it, read it over and over again before you attempt to solve it. Solving the question the wrong way will not get you any score, and it will be a waste of time anyway.
