What Happens If You Fail A Geometry Regents
A passing score of 65 or higher is required if you want to use the Geometry exam to satisfy the math requirement for graduation with a Regents Diploma. Students who fail the Geometry Regents exam have the option of taking it again as many times as necessary to receive a passing grade. In addition, even if you passed the exam you can re-take it to attempt to receive a higher score if you wish. Each Regents exam is offered three times per year, in January, June and August, giving you up to three opportunities to take the exam each school year.
Because the Regents diploma only requires successful completion of one Regents math exam, if you fail the Geometry exam, you could substitute a passing score on either the Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 exam instead.
How The Geometry Regents Is Scored
The Geometry Regents uses a conversion table to change a raw score into a scaled score. The raw score ranges from 0-86, while the scaled score ranges from 0-100. The raw score is the total of point gained for each question. The 24 Part I questions, multiple choice, are worth 2 points each. The rest of the test is free-response and each part has different scoring. The seven questions in Part II are worth 2 points each, the three questions in Part III are worth 4 points each, and the two questions in Part IV are worth 6 points each. All together, the points from the four parts add up to 86.
State: Geometry Regents Exam Has A Glitch Once Again

State school officials, for the second year in a row, have acknowledged a scoring glitch on a controversial Regents geometry exam administered earlier this week to thousands of high-school students statewide.
A notice marked Important and posted on the State Education Departments website after testing was completed indicated that one exam question had two possible correct answers, not just one. The notice asked districts to recheck students answers on that item, to make sure they get full credit for either answer.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your hard work on behalf of the students in New York State, the notice stated.
Last year, the department reported flaws in three questions on the geometry exam one of them discovered by a 16-year-old student in East Setauket.
Many local school officials condemned the state for its handling of that situation. In response, State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia pledged that exams would get extra vetting in the future in an effort to prevent such mistakes.

How Are Geometry Regents Graded
Your Geometry Regents exam will be graded by a minimum of three licensed New York mathematics teachers. No teacher is allowed to score the exam of their own students.
The Geometry exam consists of four sections: one multiple choice section and three constructed response sections.
- Part I of the exam is multiple choice and consists of 24 questions. Each question is worth 2 credits, allowing for a total possible score of 48 credits.
- Part II consists of 7 questions worth 2 credits each, allowing for a maximum possible score of 14.
- Part III consists of 3 questions worth 4 credits each, for a total possible score of 12.
- Part IV contains 1 question that is worth 6 total credits.
The combination of the four parts allows for a maximum score of 80 points. A students score on these four sections is totaled to determine their raw score. This raw score is then converted to a scale score using state-issued conversion charts. This scale score is your final exam score.
The scale score is then converted into the performance level that corresponds to the score on the conversion charts. Students must score a performance level of 3 or higher in order to receive a Regents diploma. A Local Diploma requires a performance level score of 2 or higher.
The January 2020 conversion chart lists the following scores that are needed to reach the different performance levels on the Geometry Regents exam:
Minimum Raw Score
Less Than 65% To Get A 65
For the majority of the Geometry Regents exams administered so far, a student only needed to have a raw score of 33 or 34 to get a 65. Since the maximum raw score is 86, a student only needed to get 40% of the points to get a 65. If we only examine the multiple choice questions and ignore the other three parts, we see that a student needs to answer 71% of the multiple choice questions correctly to get a 65 for the entire test.

State Must Address Regents Exam Flaws
On June 16, the New York State Board of Regents issued a dryly worded Notice to Teachers regarding this years geometry Regents exam. It read:
This notice applies to students who took the June 16, 2017 Regents Examination in Geometry . As a result of discrepancies in the wording, Questions 14 and 22 do not have only one clear and correct answer.
Question 14: When scoring this examination, either choice 3, the correct answer indicated in the Scoring Key, or choice 1 should be accepted and awarded credit.
Question 22: When scoring this examination, all students should be awarded credit regardless of the answer, if any, they record on the answer sheet for this question.
Please photocopy this notice and give a copy of it to each teacher scoring the Regents Examination in Geometry . We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we thank you for your hard work on behalf of the students in New York State.
Since June 16, yet another discrepancy in the exam has been discovered, this time by a student at Ward Melville High School, in Suffolk County, who has been described as a math whiz.
Note that the state apologized to the teachers scoring the exam, but not to the students who took it. The teachers arent the ones suffering because of the states inability to produce a fair and accurate exam. Those students are.
What Is The Purpose Of The Geometry Regents Exam
The Geometry Regents exam is designed to assess students understanding of geometry principles relative to the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics.
The Geometry exam is designed to test students mastery in the following categories of geometric knowledge:
- Similarity, Right Triangles, and Trigonometry
- Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations
- Geometric Measurement and Dimensions
- Modeling with Geometry
In their curriculum overview, the New York State Department of Education provides a detailed summary of the skills over which each student should have mastery in each of these categories.
The topics covered in the Geometry Regents exam are meant to build on the skills obtained in earlier grades. As they progress through increasingly complex math, students gain the ability to extend their mathematical knowledge and draw on that experience in problem situations.
How Many Geometry Regents Do You Need To Take To Graduate High School
Students only need to pass one Geometry Regents exam in order to graduate high school. Students who do not pass the exam on their first attempt may have to take it more than once in order to obtain a passing score.
A Regents diploma only requires students to pass one of three math exams . If a student successfully passed Algebra 1 or Algebra 2, they would not be required to take the Geometry Regents exam. Be sure to read our Algebra 1 Regents FAQ and Algebra 2 Regents FAQs.
An advanced Regents diploma requires that the student take and pass all three math exams with a scale score of 65 or higher. The advanced diploma allows students to show their proficiency in more subject areas. This additional academic effort can help a student gain admission to many colleges and universities. In addition, some colleges allow students an exemption from certain college courses with the successful completion of a Regents exam in that subject.
If a student wants to graduate with honors, they will need to score an average scale score of 90 or higher on all of the exams required for that Regents diploma. In the case of honors designations, it is not uncommon for students to retake the Geometry Regents exam more than once in order to attempt a higher score.

Break Up Your Studying
Cramming for an exam like the Geometry Regents is not a good idea. For more information, check out this BBC article Why Cramming for Tests Often Fails.
Instead, you should space out your studying over several weeks leading up to exam day. In addition to working on past exam questions, you should review your Geometry notes, practice problems, quizzes and tests as well.
One of the benefits of spacing out your studying is that it will give you opportunities to ask your geometry teacher for help before or after school. If you wait until the last minute to study, you will not have this option.
