Factor : How Conceptual Is The Material
Does the AP exam involve applying a lot of abstract and theoretical concepts, or is it primarily based on memorization? Memorization can be kind of tedious, but it’s often easier to learn this kind of material on your own than to teach yourself to understand, say, particle physics.
Try to look for APs that are not overly conceptual. This is why I generally don’t advise people to self-study for math APs, with the possible exception of AP Statistics. Generally, a course weighted more toward memorization as opposed to complex concepts is more suited to self-study.
Organic Chemistry Is Three Dimensional
You will find that nearly all of the study skills developed in general chemistry are just as applicable in organic: you still have to put in the time for concepts to marinate, you have to dig deep in problems, and you have to be on constant vigilance to ask why. However, in organic chemistry, there is a new visual component to take into account: it is essential to begin viewing molecules three dimensionally , since the 3D structure greatly impacts the actual chemistry. To start visualizing these structures use a model kit to build molecules every time you do organic chemistry . Bring the model kit to section. Your models will reveal important properties of the molecules, like the spatial relationships between different atoms, or how easily a bond can rotate. Keep the model kit on you at all times and use it!
Above all, keeping trying!! Everyone learns at different speeds and in different ways. There are lots of resources here for you because we know you can do it with the right tools. If you dont know where to start just ask meet with one of the course TAs, tutors or professors. We are all here to help YOU SUCCEED!

Take every opportunity presented to work in the lab. Working through chemistry problems and conducting chemistry experiments in a practical environment will strengthen your understanding and knowledge of chemistry.
How To Study For Chemistry
Chemistry is one of those classes you either love or dread. At the high school level chemistry is usually not a required course it’s an elective. However, most reputable colleges require all undergraduate students to take at least one chemistry course as a prerequisite to graduation. If you plan on pursuing a career in medicine, engineering, or a field of natural science, then you’re likely going to be required to take at least one chemistry course before you graduate. Chemistry is a challenging subject for most people, but it doesn’t have to be. The number one reason people struggle with chemistry is that they don’t approach it the right way. Below we’ll explore proven strategies and techniques that will, if applied, improve your ability to study and learn chemistry.
Simulate The Test Day
Perfect Practice makes Perfect Whenever you do your practice tests / passages, always work under test-day conditions. That means eliminate all distractions, turn off the music, and make sure youre in a quiet place where nobody can disturb you. If possible, do the practice on a computer but a paper copy is fine too. Always time yourself with the same test-day timing and never let yourself go over the time limit. Always stop once time runs around. You want it to be as close to test day conditions as possible.
Week : Acid & Bases Salts Qa
These 3 topics are highly interconnected and should be studied together!
Topics for Week 3: 7.1 Acid & Bases7.2 Salts1.3 Qualitative Analysis
Start off with acid & bases. Be familiar with the 3 acid reactions and the 2 alkaline reactions. Be certain of the difference between bases & alkaline as well! Lastly, try to understand the difference between strength, concentration & basicity.
Refer to my notes Chapter 7.1 – Acid & Bases!
Next, spend time to be familiar with the salt solubility table and understand 3 different salt preparation methods. It is extra important to understand when you use which method to prepare certain salts.
Refer to my notes Chapter 7.2 – Salts!
Lastly, study the test for cations, anions & gases. Most teachers tend to ask students to just memorise but I disagree. Look closely and understand the relationship between amphoteric oxides & test for cations. Understand that the test for anions is directly related to insoluble salts.
Refer to my notes Chapter 1.3 – Qualitative Analysis!
But do note that studying the content is one thing, practicing and being able to apply to questions is even more important! So take out your TYS and dedicate yourself to the practices!
Ask Lots And Lots Of Questions
Scientists ask questions – all the time! Especially WHY! Instructors always appreciate when students ask questions because it shows they are listening and really thinking about the material.
- Ask what does that really mean? in each section while you read the chapter.
- Ask why of a problem as you decide what it is asking and how to solve it.
Ask questions about the lecture and section material. If you are reviewing material on your own write these questions down. If you can answer them on your own, great! If you are stuck, then take them along with you to office hours or a study group. Then you wont forget and youll make sure you get a more thorough understanding of everything.
Jump In With Both Feet
As with other challenging subjects, including biology, jumping in with both feet is key to your success studying and learning chemistry. Partial efforts don’t cut it. Decided now that you’re going to succeed in chemistry and that you’re going to give it your all.
