HANDS ON 2021 NEW Giant TCR Advanced SL Disc

Top of the TCR tree is the Advanced SL range. Itâs the bike ridden to Giro dâItalia victory by Team Sunweb’s Tom Dumoulin in 2017 and comes with the spec options and price tag youâd expect for a grand tour winning machine.

Itâs made with Giantâs Advanced SL carbon composite, which includes carbon nanotubes in the resin, which Giant says increases strength and adds impact resistance. It also has the OverDrive 2 steerer sizing.

Unlike the other TCR frames, thereâs an integrated seatmast. This saves weight, but may need to be cut down to suit the bikeâs rider, although thereâs some adjustability in the saddle clamp.

As with the Advanced Pro, you get Giantâs built in RideSense speed and cadence sensor and tubeless ready carbon Giant SLR 1 wheels. Tyres get an upgrade to Giant Gavia AC 0 25mm tubeless ready.

There are three rim brake specs alongside one disc brake options. The TCR Advanced SL is also available as a frameset, priced at £1999.

Giant Tcr Advanced Sl 0 Disc Ride Impressions

I was initially a little apprehensive about riding such a light bike. I own the previous TCR Advanced SL and have upgraded it above and beyond whats rational, and even that weighs 7.18kg. The new bike shares the same dimensions and a very similar silhouette but is nearly half a kilo lighter.

My concern was that because I weigh 92kg, the new frame wouldnt be stiff, but I neednt have worried.

On the road, I was completely blown away by the TCR Advanced SL0 Discs dynamism. Its stiffness is resolute, its responsiveness when youre riding is little short of brilliant.

The swiftness of its handling makes it a bike you can flick around and throw into corners in an instant, where its helped by the high-quality Cadex wheels.

This Giant simply refuses to be anything but spot on when it comes to its handling nothing knocks it offline or knocks your absolute confidence in its ride.

Any bike that dips in underneath the UCIs minimum weight limit is going to climb with the best of them and this TCR excels on ascents.

New aerodynamic features also contribute to an equally impressive straight-line speed. The frames subtle truncated aerofoil tube profiles have given the TCR a wind-cheating, aero bike-like edge, with Giant having the wind tunnel figures to back them up.

Giant claims that if you ride 25 miles/40km at a constant 200W power output youll be 34 seconds quicker than if youd been riding the previous TCR.

Giant Tcr Advanced Sl 0 Disc Kit

A top-level frameset demands kit of equal standing and the Giant TCR Advanced SL0 Disc has it in the form of SRAMs 12-speed wireless Red eTap AXS.

The 48/35 chainset and 10-28 cassette combine for a gear range thats slightly wider than the 52/36 and 11-28 pairing youre likely to find on a race bike of this pedigree.

It actually has both a slightly higher top gear and a slightly lower bottom gear, which is a veritable win-win.

Giant Tcr Advanced Pro Road Bike

Move from the TCR Advanced to the TCR Advanced Pro range and you get Giantâs all-carbon fork with an OverDrive 2 steerer, which has wider 1¼ inch top and 1½ inch lower head tube bearings. This should provide a bit more steering accuracy than the standard OverDrive set-up found on the TCR Advanced range, with Giant quoting a 30 per cent increase in torsional stiffness.

You also get a wheel upgrade to Giantâs carbon rimmed SLR1 wheel system and Giant Gavia AC 1 25mm tyres.

The left chainstay carries a built in Giant RideSense speed and cadence monitor, letting you pair up to a Bluetooth or ANT+ head unit for extra ride stats without needing to buy a separate device to zip tie to your shiny new frame.

As well as complete bikes, the TCR Advanced Pro has a frameset-only option for £1299 set up for rim brakes or £1349 with discs.

My Analysis Of The Tcr Advanced Sl 2021

Giant had a very difficult task of updating its top of the range road racing frame by making it lighter, stiffer and more aerodynamic.

I think did it successfully by implementing a lot or R& D and even developing new production method to stay on top of the game.

The Giant TCR Advanced SL frame is designed for racing and it is the one used by Team CCC. If you are young and aiming at racing, it is a great quality and performance frame. But if you are not aiming at racing, I recommend picking a frame with longer chainstays than 405mm.

It features sharp steering angle, short chainstays and relatively short wheelbase, the one piece seat post also adds up on the stiffness.

If I had to buy a Giant TCR frame I would pick the TCR Advanced Pro model. It it the exact same frame geometry and has a normal seatpost that you can remove or adjust fully. It is more practical to pack and carry in a travel bag or a car with limited space.

Adding the fact you save over US$ 1,000 between a LTD and PRO for less than 100g weight difference for any size makes it a great pick. With that saving you can grab some fantastic components!

Giants ninth-generation TCR family follows in the footsteps of other major players in the industry in that it now adds a generous dose of aerodynamic shaping to its previously light-and-stiff formula. However, the family of carbon fiber frames has also gone on a diet, gains a newly refined geometry, and of course has room for bigger tires, all while still retaining its superb stiffness and composed ride quality.

We got our hands on one of the very first production flagship samples worldwide, and those of you who have been waiting in anticipation for this day to come will be happy to hear that its one hell of a good bike.

Giant TCR Advanced SL 0 Disc Review | Cycling Weekly

Over 20 years ago, the Giant TCR shook up the racing world with its then-revolutionary geometry and construction. The compact geometry was so extreme that it was banned from racing at first but was ultimately deemed legal. Now nearly every bike on the market relies on a compact geometry design, but what hasnt changed is Giants drive to push for a better and more refined race bike.

The new TCR is available as three different frames: the bells and whistles Advanced SL, the Advanced Pro and the basic Advanced. All the models are available with both disc and rims brakes and expected prices range from 1,799 to 10,199. You can choose your dream TCR from seven options. For lovers of traditional shifting and braking systems, the Advanced SL is also offered with rims brakes and a mechanical groupset, which is by no means a given in 2021 anymore.

The top of the range, matte raw carbon GIANT TCR Advanced SL 0 Disc we tested costs 10,199 . Our size L, fitted with CADEX Road Race 700 x 25C tires weighs 6.68 kg. Like all TCR bikes, the tires come setup tubeless as standard, saving you some effort. We think thats fantastic. The Quarq DZero power meter, which is integrated into the SRAM RED eTap AXS cranks is handy and makes a lot of sense for a road bike of this calibre. Another nice feature is the wireless sensor for speed and cadence integrated in the chainstay, which is compatible with either ANT+ or Bluetooth compatible devices.

The Traditional Fundamentals Still Matter

When it comes to going fast, numerous studies have proven that aerodynamic efficiency is usually the most important factor. But that said, its not the only thing that matters, and given that low weight and high chassis stiffness were two of the attributes that people found most appealing about the existing TCR, Giant wisely didnt want to mess with a good thing. Even better, Giant says the new bike has actually improved in both areas.

Its worth noting here that Giant is one of the only major brands that still manufactures all of its own frames in-house, and its composite frames begin life from rolls of raw fiber. The company even makes its own pre-preg sheets instead of purchasing it elsewhere using resins that are blended in-house and that level of control affords some additional freedom in how the frames are made. For the latest TCR Advanced SL, the company has instituted a few rather interesting-sounding manufacturing innovations.

Conversely, certain sections of the TCR Advanced SL frames are made with fewer, but bigger, plies that prioritize longer continuous fiber runs for more efficient use of material.

At least for the flagship TCR Advanced SL Disc model, Giant claims to have cleaved a substantial 140 grams off of last years already-light version utilizing all of those new processes, with 54 g shaved from the frame and fork structure itself, 65 g saved thanks to a new minimalist paint job , and the rest coming from smaller ancillary bits.

Giant Tcr Advanced 3 Road Bike

The entry into the TCR Advanced range is the TCR Advanced 3. At this level you get a full Shimano Tiagra 10-speed drivetrain. That includes a Tiagra chainset and brake calipers. These are popular items for other manufacturers to swap out for cheaper components, so their inclusion is a bonus.

The chainset is a 50/34 compact and thereâs a 12-28 cassette, so you miss out on some of the top end range of more expensive models, which come with an 11-speed 11-28 or 11-30 cassette. Wheels are alloy Giant SR2 with Giant Gavia AC 1 25mm tyres.

At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don’t intentionally try to break anything but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product’s function and value with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

What the road.cc scores mean

Good scores are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.

The Giant TCR Advanced SL 0 Disc is a lightweight and hugely responsive road bike with aero features, and it puts in a performance that is absolutely stunning.

Giant Tcr Advanced Sl 0 Disc Features

Giant has put so much detail into the new TCR frameset weaving their own carbon fibre sheets in-house in Taiwan, the brands engineers use laser-cutting tools to design and shape each piece. This new Giant TCR frame requires about 500 pieces of carbon fibre to create, unlike the previous version, which requires 380 pieces. Giant employed robotics to ensure the pieces were accurately placed in the mold, especially the 150 smallest pieces.

With the advanced carbon materials and manufacturing techniques used to design this new TCR, the aerodynamics and stiffness of the bike has been greatly improved. Giant has also reduced the weight of the frame and the fork by using special Thin-Line paint. This makes the bike up to 140.43g lighter than its predecessor.

Also included is the integrated seat post, which is much lighter than the conventional post. It grips well and prevents you from slipping during wet rides. However, some people have made complaints about this post because it makes the bike difficult to pack for travel. Giant has also incorporated two different clamps in this new TCR, 25mm and 45mm height adjustment clamps. This is a good feature for riders with longer legs.

Which Model Should You Go For

Giantâs road bike range has consistently garnered plaudits in our reviews over the years. As the largest bike company in the world Giant has the resources to put into its R& D, developing innovative solutions like its compact road geometry and OverDrive steerer.

Giantâs emphasis on composite technology and its development of quality own brand wheels and tyres mean that youâre unlikely to feel short changed by the components fitted to its bikes either. So whichever model you go for, you can expect a quality machine for the price.

The whole TCR Advanced range is race-oriented, so if you see yourself more as an endurance rider it might be worth considering the Defy range instead, which has a more relaxed geometry.

But if youâre looking for a moderately priced road bike for faster sportives, club runs and entry level racing the TCR Advanced range is likely to fit the bill. As we said above, itâs got quality features like full Shimano groupsets and carbon seatposts throughout.

For serious riders with a budget of over £2000 though, itâs worth stepping up to the TCR Advanced Pro range, even if that means a lower spec groupset. Not only do you get an OverDrive 2 steerer, the range includes a full-carbon fork and carbon wheelset too. And all Shimanoâs groupsets are so good that youâre unlikely to feel disappointed if you need to trade down a notch.

PRO BIKE CHECK | MICHAEL MATTHEWS 2022 GIANT TCR ADVANCED SL DISC

The TCR is now in its ninth generation and the newest version is claimed to put its predecessors in the shade and be ready to break new records. This model has been on the road for more than 23 years in various incarnations so how can it be improved further? GIANTs engineers have gone back to basics and analysed every last detail and feature of the TCR. Thats resulted in a frameset that is more than 10% lighter without sacrificing any stiffness. The frame is constructed from up to 150 pieces of pre-preg, the layup of which can be seen through the clear coat finish. The TCR certainly looks the part!

The integrated seatpost, dubbed ISP, is reserved for the GIANT TCR Advanced SL. It forms a seamless part of the frame and as well as contributing to the sensationally low 6.68 kg weight, also allows the compliance of the bike to be carefully tuned. This construction allows the stiffness and flexibility of the seatpost to be designed within clear parameters, rather than having to accept varying levels of stiffness with different insertion depths of a conventional seatpost. The bike comes with two seatpost toppers with different lengths and offsets, allowing you to tune your riding position.
