We test out Cube’s race-ready Agree GTC SL

    Top marks to Cube; the Agree GTC SL is a decent rig, and not just at this price point its an all-round versatile bike that will suit many riders ability and ambitions. Cube may not have the team to race its latest showpiece, but its assured a place on the affordability podium.

    Its interesting to see how a brand like Cube maintains its place on the shop floor and ultimately under riders.

    Having a pro team gives a brand exposure and the opportunity to work with its team to produce new products. But Cube doesnt have this presence, unlike its German counterparts Focus and Canyon . Cube possesses a sterling reputation, though, for providing excellent value as it has done with the Agree GTC SL.

    The frame is produced from monocoque carbon using the brands Twin Mold technology. This process gives the engineers more control over the frames carbon layup. By manipulating the carbon and resin in this manner, Cube optimises the thickness of the walls inside the tubes thicker in areas of greater stress, thinner in others. The aim is to deliver the best strength-to-weight ratio.

    Its stiff. The power transfer from the press-fit bottom bracket and oversized tubing notably the big chainstays is efficient, while up front the headtube is uncompromisingly paired with Cubes house brand Syntaces alloy cockpit.

    The Agree C: 62 Sl: Longer And Lower With More Bling

    There was a time when the Agree was constructed from GTC, but from 2016, Cube started using a new carbon fibre blend dubbed C:62. This composite takes its name from the amount of fibre content, which is 62%, and is bolstered with nanoparticles to improve durability and impact resistance.

    According to Cube, the Agree C:62 frame weighs in at 1,150g while the fork is 400g.

    The Agree C:62 shares many of the same features as the Attain GTC including the same head tube , threadless BB86 bottom bracket, 27.2mm seatpost internal cable routing, and a replaceable alloy derailleur hanger to suit Shimanos new direct mount rear derailleurs.

    The Agree has been shaped with aerodynamics in mind, hence the seatpost clamp integrates with the frame and Shimanos direct mount brake callipers sit flush with the fork legs and seatstays. The bike is still a long way from occupying the same wind-cheating territory as Cubes Aerium but the Agree clearly has higher performance goals than the Attain GTC.

    With this in mind, its not surprising that the geometry of the Agree is more aggressive. The stack of the bike is 15-20mm lower with 6-11mm more reach when compared to the Attain, as shown in the table below:

    The Agree has a bottom bracket drop of 69-73mm, decreasing as the frame size increases, while the chainstay length is a uniform 412mm, regardless of whether the Agree is fitted with rim or disc brakes.

    A Great Value Entry Level Carbon Race Bike But It All Feels A Little Confused

    German brand Cube started in 1993 by selling bikes direct to consumers with a focus on good value. Here in 2015 and theyre available through a selection of shops but Cube still remains fixed on offering reasonable prices. The Agree GTC Pro sits just below the top-of-the-line Litening in Cubes road bike line range and benefits from trickle-down technology in the frame. All the info on the bike describes it as racy, so we were keen to put it to the test.

    German brand Cube offers a wide range of road bikes with a focus on performance, comfort and value for money, with smart design and choice of frame materials. Navigating a company’s range of bikes can often be bewildering, but Cubes road range is relatively easy to make sense of.     Two Cubes: Agree C: 62 Sl And Attain Gtc Sl Road Bike Review

    Cube has been selling bikes for 25 years and in that time the German brand has grown considerably to gain a strong foothold in the international market. And while Cube may be best known for its off-road bikes, the company has been supplying road bikes to the Wanty-Groupe Gobert Pro Continental team since 2015.

    In this review, Australian tech editor Matt Wikstrom compares and contrasts two bikes from Cubes road catalogue: the entry-level Attain GTC SL and the mid-level Agree C:62 SL. The thinking behind the design of each bike is quite distinct, as are the specifications and pricing, so what do they have to offer buyers?

    About Cube Agree Bikes

    One up from the Peloton range is Cube’s aluminium framed Agree road bike range. Bikes in the Agree range are very similar to the Peloton range being ideal for anything from training rides to club runs to sportives. The key difference between the two ranges is that Agree models are better equipped so are better suited to more serious riders looking for higher performance setup. Frames in the Agree range feature ‘aero flex’ seat stays which are designed to flex and absorb vibrations from the road whilst also reducing drag to a minimum. Agree frames also feature internally routed cables which help protect cables from the elements and creates a frame with nice clean lines. For a range of cheaper aluminium framed road bikes consider Cube’s Peloton range and for a range of carbon fibre framed road bikes for around the same price consider Cube’s Agree GTC range.

    Cube Attain And Attain Disc

    The Attain is the focussed endurance bike of the Cube range, complete with Road Comfort geometry, and features nine models in total. The carbon used here is GTC spec, which is said to provide high levels of comfort for all-day riding in partnership with the forgiving layout.;Its heavier than;the carbon used on Cubes Litening and Agree bikes, too.

    There are four of these carbon Attain bikes, with the GTC SL and GTC Pro rim brake models coming built with Shimano Ultegra and 105 drivetrains respectively for £1,599 and £1,499 apiece.

    The disc brake versions feature a Shimano Ultegra groupset on the SLT for £2,049, and Ultegra mixed with non-series components on the Race Disc model to hit a lower price point of £1,799.

    Aluminium frames also enter the fray with the Attain, in exactly the same endurance geometry. These are made using 6061 T6 tubing and can be had in a number of builds from Shimano 105 level, through to a cost-effective eight-speed Shimano Claris model in the rim brake version , and Shimano Sora for the disc brake bike .;Whatever frame material you opt for, you always get a Cube CSL Race carbon fork.

    Making the switch from the Attain GTC SL to the Agree C:62 SL wasnt very difficult. After all, the geometry of the two bikes was near-identical, so all that was required was a change in stems to account for the difference in the stack and reach of each bike.

    With a lower front end and thicker tubing, the Agree C:62 SL looks more aggressive and aerodynamic than the Attain GTC SL, but it was the build, weight, and ride quality that really set it apart. Electronic cockpit controls will always add a level of sophistication to any bike; add in a lighter wheelset and better brakes and the result is a sound mid-level offering at an attractive price.

    Out on the road, the Agree C:62 proved race-willing with a stiff chassis and sturdy demeanour. There was more feedback from the road, too, and a satisfying amount of responsiveness. In short, compared to the sedate nature of the Attain GTC SL, the Agree C:62 SL was keen to be let off the leash.

    The Agree C:62 was quite smooth and quiet to ride on paved roads, but there was an edge to the ride quality that wasnt present for the Attain GTC. Thus, any kind of hit was felt more keenly at the bars and saddle, but the extra feedback was never harsh or overwhelming. In fact, the Agree C:62 SL managed to maintain a highly refined feel, even when I was riding on rough roads or unpaved tracks.

    Cube Agree Gtc Review

    The Agree GTC is stiff and fast, the equipment will be ripe for upgrade after a season or two of good use and the frame will more than handle it. Buy now, upgrade as you go – that’s the motto here.

    With no bikes in the pro peloton it would be easy to dismiss or simply overlook Cube. But this lack of sponsorship also means that, ultimately, you’re not paying for someone else to ride a bike.

    Our Agree GTC sits at the bottom of the carbon range. Another five models stretch out above, while below, the aluminium Peloton bikes sit awaiting keen newcomers.

    With the Agree GTC you can choose between a compact or triple chainset and, just in case you were wondering, GTC stands for Grand Tour Composite.

    Despite the obvious cost consciousness of the Agree GTC, Cube hasn’t opted for the heavyweight and slightly irksome 2300 Shimano groupset. Instead they’ve gone with Tiagra. You might still argue that it’s holding the frame back, but that’s the choice if you want carbon at this price.

    Shimano R501 wheels also hint towards cost savings, but Easton EA30 connections and decent Schwalbe tyres show that Cube knows what it’s about when it comes to spending a limited budget. A Selle Italia X1 saddle is another well-known name that adds a positive overall air to the bike and will surely have showroom snobs looking twice at the swing tag.

    Stiff and fast

    As we mentioned earlier, it’s clear where Cube has spent its meagre budget and we can’t fault the choices made.

    Our immediate benefit from this new supply chain is the Attain GTC Race, which features a top to bottom frame refresh for 2016. The Attain is Cubes version of the fondo/endurance bike, with GTC standing for Gran Turismo Composite no less. Well receive this model as well as the Attain GTC Pro Disc in Australia, paralleled by the racier Agree C:62 Pro and SL Team models.     German manufacturer Cube is a regular in our reviews section, but was a Tour de France newbie this year with the Belgian Wanty-Groupe Gobert team who got a wildcard entry.

    The Agree was a favourite of ours in its earlier race bike guise but underwent a major revamp in 2016 when it reappeared as an endurance bike with aero characteristics, bringing together two of modern cyclings major trends.

    Cube says it offers the high performance of a race bike, yet comfortable for long distances. This does make for a slightly quirky-looking bike, especially around the head-tube and the junction of the seat tube, top tube and dropped seatstays.

    As usual, Cube offers a lot of bike for your bucks. You get a complete Shimano Ultegra groupset including the chain, and Mavics Cosmic Elite wheels, whose 30mm-deep rims should offer an aerodynamic advantage.

    And though this has endurance riding as part of its remit, the geometry isnt that relaxed Im not talking sit up and beg here. Compared with the Scott Addict 30 a full-on race bike the geometry is similar. The Cubes head tube is a centimetre higher, the head tube angle a fraction shallower, but even the top tube length, stack and reach figures arent that far out.
