Conducting Psychology Research In The Real World

University of Arizona

Because of its ability to determine cause-and-effect relationships, the laboratory experiment is traditionally considered the method of choice for psychological science. One downside, however, is that as it carefully controls conditions and their effects, it can yield findings that are out of touch with reality and have limited use when trying to understand real-world behavior. This module highlights the importance of also conducting research outside the psychology laboratory, within participants natural, everyday environments, and reviews existing methodologies for studying daily life

    Treatment And Control Conditions

Between-subjects experiments are often used to determine whether a treatment works. In psychological research, a treatment is any intervention meant to change peoples behaviour for the better. This intervention includes psychotherapies and medical treatments for psychological disorders but also interventions designed to improve learning, promote conservation, reduce prejudice, and so on. To determine whether a treatment works, participants are randomly assigned to either a treatment condition, in which they receive the treatment, or a control condition, in which they do not receive the treatment. If participants in the treatment condition end up better off than participants in the control conditionfor example, they are less depressed, learn faster, conserve more, express less prejudicethen the researcher can conclude that the treatment works. In research on the effectiveness of psychotherapies and medical treatments, this type of experiment is often called a randomized clinical trial

    The Powerful Placebo

Many people are not surprised that placebos can have a positive effect on disorders that seem fundamentally psychological, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia. However, placebos can also have a positive effect on disorders that most people think of as fundamentally physiological. These include asthma, ulcers, and warts . There is even evidence that placebo surgeryalso called sham surgerycan be as effective as actual surgery.

Evaluating the different types of experiment is very straightforward, as soon as you understand that THE ADVANTAGES OF ONE DESIGN ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE OTHER. If you understand this then you actually don’t have to revise as much information, as you can reuse the same ideas in a number of different places! For example, a lab experiment will try to tightly control variables in an artificial setting. This means that it is less likely that any confounding variables will affect the results , but is also means that the situation will have very low ecological validity. This means that the situation does not resemble real life, so there is a danger that the behaviour produced by participants will not be realistic as a result. If this is the case, then we cannot generalise the results of the experiment to real life behaviour . A field experiment will be the opposite. It will have high ecological validity as it occurs in a natural setting, but the poor control of extraneous variables makes it much more likely that they could affect the DV and confound the results. A quasi experiment has the obvious drawback that the researcher is not properly in control of the variables involved, so again there is the possibility for the results to be confounded.

    Carryover Effects And Counterbalancing

The primary disadvantage of within-subjects designs is that they can result in order effects. An order effect occurs when participants responses in the various conditions are affected by the order of conditions to which they were exposed. One type of order effect is a carryover effect. A carryover effect is an effect of being tested in one condition on participants behavior in later conditions. One type of carryover effect is a practice effect, where participants perform a task better in later conditions because they have had a chance to practice it. Another type is a fatigue effect, where participants perform a task worse in later conditions because they become tired or bored. Being tested in one condition can also change how participants perceive stimuli or interpret their task in later conditions. This type of effect is called a context effect . For example, an average-looking defendant might be judged more harshly when participants have just judged an attractive defendant than when they have just judged an unattractive defendant. Within-subjects experiments also make it easier for participants to guess the hypothesis. For example, a participant who is asked to judge the guilt of an attractive defendant and then is asked to judge the guilt of an unattractive defendant is likely to guess that the hypothesis is that defendant attractiveness affects judgments of guilt.

    Research Involving Human Participants

Any experiment involving the participation of human subjects is governed by extensive, strict guidelines designed to ensure that the experiment does not result in harm. Any research institution that receives federal support for research involving human participants must have access to an institutional review board . The IRB is a committee of individuals often made up of members of the institutions administration, scientists, and community members . The purpose of the IRB is to review proposals for research that involves human participants. The IRB reviews these proposals with the principles mentioned above in mind, and generally, approval from the IRB is required in order for the experiment to proceed.

An institutions IRB requires several components in any experiment it approves. For one, each participant must sign an informed consent form before they can participate in the experiment. An informed consent form provides a written description of what participants can expect during the experiment, including potential risks and implications of the research. It also lets participants know that their involvement is completely voluntary and can be discontinued without penalty at any time. Furthermore, the informed consent guarantees that any data collected in the experiment will remain completely confidential. In cases where research participants are under the age of 18, the parents or legal guardians are required to sign the informed consent form.

International Conflict As A Contemporary Problem

Psychological Research: Example of a Two Group, Between Subjects Design

Psychological theory and research can make useful contributions to the understanding and amelioration of the violent manifestations of international conflict. Indeed, psychological concepts and findings have been used increasingly in the study of international conflict and international relations more generally as well as in the development of new approaches to conflict resolution. This article offers a perspective on international conflict that is anchored in socialpsychological theory and research and that, in turn, informs the practice of conflict resolution. Socialpsychological analysis is designed to complement approaches based on structural or strategic analysis by providing a special lens for viewing international conflict that brings some of its less explored dimensions into focus.

In this spirit, the article begins with a discussion of several propositions about the nature of international conflict that flow from a socialpsychological perspective and that have clear implications for conflict resolution. It then describes socialpsychological processes characteristic of conflict interaction that contribute to the escalation and perpetuation of conflict and that must be reversed if such conflict is to be resolved.

    Independent And Dependent Variables

In a research experiment, we strive to study whether changes in one thing cause changes in another. To achieve this, we must pay attention to two important variables, or things that can be changed, in any experimental study: the independent variable and the dependent variable. An independent variable is manipulated or controlled by the experimenter. In a well-designed experimental study, the independent variable is the only important difference between the experimental and control groups. In our example of how violent television programs affect childrens display of violent behavior, the independent variable is the type of programviolent or nonviolentviewed by participants in the study . A dependent variable is what the researcher measures to see how much effect the independent variable had. In our example, the dependent variable is the number of violent acts displayed by the experimental participants.

Figure 2.17 In an experiment, manipulations of the independent variable are expected to result in changes in the dependent variable.

We expect that the dependent variable will change as a function of the independent variable. In other words, the dependent variable depends on the independent variable. A good way to think about the relationship between the independent and dependent variables is with this question: What effect does the independent variable have on the dependent variable?

    Research Methods in Psychology

In the history of psychological research, there are many examples of when subjects

were in highly unethical ways, at least by our standards today. However, deception remains an important tool in modern psychological research with human subjects. As discussed in these lectures, any use of deception must first be approved by an Institutional Review Board and the experimenter must provide justification for why deception is essential to their study.

When is it acceptable for a researcher in psychology to use deception? That is, when are researchers permitted to not give a complete explanation of the study and obtain informed consent prior to participation?

    Select the two correct answers.

    a) If understanding the hypothesis being tested will affect or bias the participants behavior in ways that will render the entire experiment invalid.

    b) When the long-term benefits of the research out-weigh the short-term costs of deceiving the participants, as determined by an Institutional Review Board.

    c) If the researcher shares the final results of the study with the deceived participants when they are ultimately published.

    d) If the researcher obtains informed consent from the participant authorizing the deception.

    e) Deception is never allowed in psychological research under any circumstances.

Some psychologists argue that this is because we are not aware of what we are thinking about. When we are in our heads, we are rarely aware of what we are thinking. This is usually due to the fact we are in a world of our own. We are not a part of the world around us, so the thought of us in the world is not a thought and therefore not a thought that is in the world.

This is not the case for many people though, but for most people, it is. We think of others in the world as being in our heads, but in reality, most of the time, we are not in our heads. We are simply in the world.

In our brains, we are not aware of the things that are happening around us, but we are aware of the things that are happening around us. This reality is not the same as the world around us because in our minds, we are not truly aware of the world. This is also not the same as the actual reality, because in our brains, we are not aware of the actual real world around us.

That reality is the world that we live in. It is the reality that surrounds us, all around us. It is the reality that were in the same brain as the people around us, and it is the reality that we are aware of. It is the reality that the thoughts and feelings and actions we experience are not the same as they are in our brains.

    S Of Psychological Research

There are several methods for conducting research in psychology. The particular type a researcher chooses often depends on the type of data they wish to obtain and whether this data should be qualitative or quantitative. Researchers can then determine whether they will base their study on descriptive, correlational, or experimental research. From there, they decide which methods of data collection best suit their study.

The following section provides an explanation of these types of data, research, and collection methods. Students conducting online research may find that they lean heavily on descriptive and correlational research. Students also often use case studies and archival data collection. No matter your preferred methods of psychological research, online sources usually provide enough data for students’ research papers and literature reviews.

  • Refining Your Search Results

Combing through a seemingly interminable list of websites to find the information you need is a painstaking and inefficient endeavor. In order to narrow down your search results and focus on sources that fit your needs, you can take advantage of several tools Google offers. Search shortcuts allow you to target specific search results. These symbols or words allow you to indicate precisely which phrases or keywords you would like to include or exclude from your results. Shortcuts can also help you search for results on a particular site or related pages.

Site search allows users to search within a particular domain. To perform this function, simply type “site:” followed by the domain you want to search within. Note that there should be no spaces between “site:” and the domain name that follows. You can add a keyword before the site search to find information about a specific topic within that domain. For example: “psychology certification” followed by “site:apa.org.” This will bring up information about psychology certification on the official website for the American Psychology Association. Using the site function, you can filter results to a particular class of site .

You can use also the advanced search function to refine your searches without shortcut text. Advanced search allows you to add filters to control for the types of results you get, such as articles published within a certain timeframe.
