What Psychology Careers Involve Working With The Elderly

What does a Clinical MSc course involve? My experience of studying a Clinical Psychology Masters.

Psychology for the elderly, or geriatric psychology, is a crucial part of taking care of our aging populations. As people live longer and populations skew toward having a larger percentage of older people, and as research continues to highlight the special needs of older adults, careers in geriatric psychology are on the rise. A geriatric psychologist may wear many different hats, but here are a few careers in psychology that involve working with the elderly:

What Are The Responsibilities Of A Clinical Psychologist

Students with an interest in a career in clinical psychology will generally have the option of pursuing general clinical psychology or choosing a focus area in one particular type of patient or disorder. A clinical psychologist has three general responsibilities, regardless of their area of employment. These are:

  • Assessing the patient
  • Diagnosing a disorder
  • Recommending a possible treatment
  • In order to properly assess a patient, the clinical psychologist will interview the client as well as any family members who might have insight into their diagnosis. During interviews, a clinical psychologist will learn about the difficulties and issues facing the client. Another way for clinical psychologists to gather information about a patient is by observing them in their environment. Once the assessment is complete the clinical psychologist will evaluate all of the data and make a diagnosis. This process may take a few days to complete and include the psychologist studying information, such as unusual thoughts and behaviors to create the best fitting diagnosis for the client. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is typically used to help choose a diagnosis depending upon the clients specific symptoms.

    Psychological Testing And Assessment

Another tool used in assessment is psychological testing. The term sounds ominous, but APA.org says it is similar to the concept of medical testing. Medical patients displaying certain symptoms may be advised to undergo blood tests, heart stress tests and other assessments. The results help the physician decide upon a course of treatment. In the same way, psychology patients displaying certain symptoms are given targeted psychological tests.

For instance, a child may have learning difficulties for a variety of reasons. There may be an underlying behavioral issue, memory problems, a lack of aptitude, or a medical issue among other causes. Someone experiencing difficulties at work or in a relationship may have anger management problems, depression, anxiety or even delusions.

Testing involves using standardized, or norm-referenced tests that are evaluated in the same manner by anyone administering them. Results are then compared to the performance of similar individuals. Assessments, on the other hand, include norm-referenced testing, surveys and informal tests, medical records, input from other professionals and other material. Just as different medical tests are ordered for patients, psychological tests are chosen for the needs of specific clients.
