There are four main ways you can generate the geometry for your simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics:
Each of these means of geometry creation provides different opportunities and advantages. The first method enables you to generate your geometry using only the COMSOL Multiphysics modeling environment. This method is the focus of todays blog post, as we will discuss its associated workflow.
The general steps for creating a geometry include:
Sometimes, it can be more efficient to create geometry primitives in lower dimensions using work planes and then extend them into the dimension that was not initially considered. Work planes can also be used to define cross sections from a higher dimensional entity to a lower dimensional workspace.
Lets now dive further into the details of using geometry primitives, geometry operations, and work plane operations. Note that these operations can be used for geometries native to COMSOL Multiphysics as well as those created through another CAD program.

The Geometry In The Simulation Process
Creating or importing a geometry is usually the first step in the COMSOL Multiphysics modeling process. Depending on the goal of our simulation, the geometry can be either a realistic or an idealized representation of a device.
There are various ways to build a geometry. For example, we can draw shapes on a work plane and extrude them, or we can create a solid object and combine it with other solid objects to obtain a final shape. On some occasions, the device we are drawing consists of several parts. To be able to apply different material settings, we would need to draw these parts as separate solid objects.
Imported geometry from a CAD file, for example, often needs repair or simplification by removing small, or otherwise unnecessary, details. In the COMSOL® software, we can draw new shapes to complement imported objects. Regardless of how we create the geometry, we can always go back and edit the various operations .
After we create the geometry, we can proceed to define the physics, include material and boundary settings, and then mesh the geometry. If necessary, we can go back to modify the design, in which case the physics settings are retained on the domains and boundaries we have originally selected. Before solving, we create the finite element mesh, which should provide an adequate approximation of the geometry. Finally, we evaluate the results of the simulation by plotting them on the geometry.
Advantages Of The Create Geometry From Mesh Feature
There are multiple options for importing meshes into COMSOL Multiphysics software for users that interface with specialized mesh programs. The mesh formats supported by COMSOL software include NASTRAN® Bulk Data, VRML v1, and STL. Building upon this practice, users of COMSOL Multiphysics version 5.0 now have the option to do more with these imported meshes.
The Create Geometry from Mesh feature adds an additional Component to your model with the geometry included, created from the imported mesh. With this new feature, you can create a surrounding domain around this geometry, as shown in the video further down the page. After creating this separate domain, perform boolean operations such as Difference, Intersection, and Union. If the original geometry is to be meshed as well, the new Copy feature for meshes comes in handy. No need to re-mesh the original geometry simply copy the mesh from the original Component into the new one.
Note that, for the time being, this can only be done when there are no intersections between the geometry objects.

Selecting The Geometric Kernel
When we install COMSOL Multiphysics® with a license that includes the CAD Import Module, Design Module, or one of the LiveLink products for CAD, the Parasolid® kernel is set to default when starting a new model. However, we can easily change this setting in the Preferences window.
To check and change the geometric kernel in a model component after we have started modeling, we can click the Geometry node in the Model Builder to navigate to the Settings window for Geometry.
By changing the Geometry representation in the settings, we can control which kernel handles the geometry in the current model component. Changing the kernel requires a rebuild of the geometry sequence by using the kernel we have switched to. When we switch kernels in a model that already contains solutions, we can avoid re-solving the model by clicking the Update Solution button on the Study toolbar to map the solutions to the rebuilt geometry.
The geometry sequence cannot be rebuilt using the COMSOL kernel if it includes any operations that are only available with the CAD kernel. These operations include those that appear under Defeaturing and Repair in the Geometry toolbar the Import feature and the Loft, Midsurface, Thicken, Chamfer, and Fillet operations included with the Design Module. In these situations, we can convert the geometry objects to be used with the COMSOL® kernel, as discussed below.

Geometry Parts And Part Instances
The CAD tools that are available for creating geometries with COMSOL Multiphysics include a number of so-called geometric primitives basic geometric shapes such as blocks, cones, cylinders, spheres, pyramids, and tori in 3D. You can combine such geometric primitives to form more complex geometries for use in simulations.
Geometry parts provide a way to reproduce and parameterize such complex geometries. They can be used to simplify geometry creation by providing easy-to-use parts with a number of parameters for tailoring the parts shape or dimension when added to a COMSOL Multiphysics geometry.
An example of a geometry part: A Helical Gear part from the Part Library available in the Multibody Dynamics Module.
When you add geometry parts , they become part instances in the active geometry, where they appear like any other geometry feature as part of the geometry sequence that defines the full geometry used for simulations. In the Settings window for geometry instances, you define the shape, dimension, and location of the part instance by specifying values of the input parameters that have been defined for the geometry part and the position and orientation of the instantiated part .
Not One But Two Geometric Kernels
Geometric kernels can be configured to do different tasks. To ensure the best possible performance, COMSOL Multiphysics provides not one but two kernels. It includes the COMSOL kernel, which works best with geometry created in the software. To handle imported CAD geometry, the CAD Import Module Design Module and LiveLink for CAD products, which you can view in the COMSOL® Software Product Suite, package a dedicated geometric kernel, the Parasolid® kernel .
The Parasolid® kernel provides repair functionality for imported CAD designs. It also includes functionality that enables simplification of the geometry to delete fillets or holes, for example. There is more to it than the repair and defeaturing of imported objects, however. The Parasolid® kernel also powers the geometric modeling functionality included with the Design Module, such as creating lofted surfaces, creating fillets and chamfers on 3D objects, generating the midsurface of solid objects, and adding material to surfaces to create a solid. Last but not least, the usual geometry operations are also implemented by the Parasolid® kernel. This means that even when using this kernel, we can create and modify geometry, including imported CAD objects.
