He studied philosophy and medicine. An introspective man, he was very interested in the acquisition of knowledge. One of his goals was to separate psychology from philosophy and turn it into a science. He wanted to show that it was a scientific field that deserved recognition. The true father of psychology was born in Germany in 1832, and his name was Wilhelm Wundt.
Its interesting that this notable scientist, a man who laid the foundations for the field of psychology, is completely unknown to most people. If you asked anyone who the most important names in psychology are, youd probably hear Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, William James, or Albert Ellis. Despite his relative obscurity, however, Wundt was responsible for crucial research into concepts that would later be the key to understanding this discipline.
Interestingly, Wilhelm Wundts efforts made him stand out from the crowd. He wanted to fully understand what we call consciousness, and what he saw as law of the mind. To answer his questions, he did what no one else had done: he created the first laboratory devoted exclusively to psychology.
Freud And Psychoanalytic Theory
Perhaps one of the most influential and well-known figures in psychologys history was Sigmund Freud . Freud was an Austrian neurologist who was fascinated by patients suffering from hysteria and neurosis. Hysteria was an ancient diagnosis for disorders, primarily of women with a wide variety of symptoms, including physical symptoms and emotional disturbances, none of which had an apparent physical cause. Freud theorized that many of his patients problems arose from the unconscious mind. In Freuds view, the unconscious mind was a repository of feelings and urges of which we have no awareness. Gaining access to the unconscious, then, was crucial to the successful resolution of the patients problems. According to Freud, the unconscious mind could be accessed through dream analysis, by examinations of the first words that came to peoples minds, and through seemingly innocent slips of the tongue. Psychoanalytic theory focuses on the role of a persons unconscious, as well as early childhood experiences, and this particular perspective dominated clinical psychology for several decades .
Sigmund Freud was a highly influential figure in the history of psychology. One of his many books, A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis, shared his ideas about psychoanalytical therapy it was published in 1922.

The 4th Wave: Positive Psychology
As already pointed out earlier in this article, positive psychology is psychology with a positive orientation, concerned with authentic happiness and a good life.
Humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow maintained that psychology itself does not have an accurate understanding of the human potential and that the field tends not to raise the proverbial bar high enough with respect to maximum attainment.
He wrote:
The science of psychology has been far more successful on the negative than on the positive side it has revealed to us much about mans shortcomings, his illnesses, his sins, but little about his potentialities, his virtues, his achievable aspirations, or his full psychological height. It is as if psychology had voluntarily restricted itself to only half its rightful jurisdiction, and that the darker, meaner half
While the previous waves of psychology focused on human flaws, overcoming deficiencies, avoiding pain, and escape from unhappiness, positive psychology focuses on well-being, contentment, excitement, cheerfulness, the pursuit of happiness, and meaning in life.>
The humanistic movement wanted to look at what drives us to want to grow and achieve fulfillment. However, even though their conceptual ideas of human nature did influence the development of positive psychology, they are separate. While the humanistic approach used more qualitative methods, positive psychology is developing a more scientific epistemology of understanding human beings.

Who Was The Father Of Psychology
If you want to know more about the father of psychology, you have to travel back in time to 1857 Germany. That was the year that Wilhelm Wundt graduated cum laude with a degree in medicine from Heidelberg University. Later, he started practicing with Hermann von Helmholtz, known for his important contributions to the field of physiology.
The relationship between von Helmholtz and Wundt wasnt very good. In fact, due to this, Wundt decided to transfer to Leipzig University to study philosophy. There, he became the chair of the psychology department. To understand how significant that was, you have to know that, at the time, psychology was considered part of philosophy.
In the second half of the 19th century, the scientific community still believed in Plato and Aristotles ideas. When defining the mind, they still used terms such as soul or spirit. Later, Descartes strayed away from these precepts to separate the thinking self, res cogitans, from the material or the physical plane.
Little by little, the understanding of these psychological concepts became independent from the philosophical tradition. The biggest and most decisive leap, however, came from Wilhelm Wundt.

Sigmund Freud: Father Of Psychology
Sigmund Freud is a very well-known name. Freud developed theories about the mind and its functioning and founded psychoanalytical treatment for psychological problems based on those theories. He devoted his life to learning, helping patients, and developing theories to further the understanding of the human psyche.
While Freud took copious notes on his sessions with clients, his observations were mostly his interpretations of one persons problems at a time. His theories were largely extrapolations of very limited data. Freuds theory of the mind and the problems his patients experienced were based largely on the idea of unconscious motivations or thoughts and stimuli outside the awareness of the person.
While Freud worked, he had no means of studying and quantifying the mind or his theories by the scientific method. Since modern psychology is a scientific field, it might be best to look for another person to fill the role as the leader of psychology.
The 3rd Wave: Humanistic Psychology
This wave is known for its two major strands of thought existentialist psychology and humanistic psychology .
According to Sartre, every human being is responsible for working out his identity and his lifes meaning through the interaction between himself and his surroundings. No one else can do it for him, least of all a non-existent God. For this reason, meaning is something truly unique to each person separate and independent .
One cannot quarrel with this strand of thought, particularly the responsibility of the individual for his own destiny, but the underlying atheism is dampening.
What about people who cannot find their identity and their lifes meaning on their own?
Uncontrollable anxiety would be inevitable, particularly in the absence of faith in a supernatural being, an idea rejected by existentialism. This anxiety is recognized in psychotherapy as existential anxiety and has been of major therapeutic concern of many leading psychologists, particularly Victor Frankl, the originator of logo-therapy.
There is a considerable divergence of views on the question of What is lifes meaning? and, clearly, each individual needs to work it out for themselves, with their own unique experience and surroundings.
Here is a very thoughtful quote from Kierkegaard, arguably the earliest exponent of existentialism:
The 5 basic principles or postulates of humanistic psychology are:

Distinguished Psychology As A Science
Before Wilhelm Wundt, there was no science known as psychology. People who studied the mind did so by learning about biology and philosophy. Wundt also started with these two subject areas, but he melded them together to create a distinct science of psychology that was more complete than the sum of its parts. Wundt was the first person to label himself a psychologist to study psychology.
Founded First Experimental Psychology Lab
Publications and Psychological Journals
Wundts book Principles of Physiological Psychology, published in 1874, detailed the experimental techniques hed developed for psychology research at that time. Wundt also established the first psychology journal, titled Philosophical Studies, which reported on experimental psychology findings as well as general concepts of psychology.
Contributions of Students
Wundt didnt start a specific field of psychologyat least, he didnt give a name to any school of thought or write any works devoted to one school of thought. What he did, though, was to approach psychology in a unique way. By doing so, he laid the foundation for a school of thought a student, Edward B. Titchener, would found and call Structuralism.
Structuralism involved breaking down the processes of the human mind to study them separately. Structuralism was also devoted to studying the overall mind structure, and how each individual part worked together to form a conscious thought.
Who Were The Pioneers Of Psychology In India
Turning now to the academic psychology that was transplanted from the West, we may note two pioneers: Narendra Nath Sengupta of the Calcutta University, who was trained in experimental psychology with Hugo Munsterberg at Harvard, and his successor Girindra Shekhar Bose, who became a self-taught psychoanalyst to be

Why Did Sigmund Freud Marry His Mother
In an effort to understand the nature of hysteria, he imagined that his father had abused him and some of his siblings. He came to realize that, as a boy, he had wanted to marry his mother, and saw his father as a rival for her love. Freud understood his own wishes to be universal among all boys in all cultures.
Inspiration In A Bed Of Roses
The story of Seligmans epiphany in his rose gardenwhich started the movement of positive psychologyhas become somewhat a folk legend. This is how the story goes:
Seligmans daughter, who was 5 at the time, had been trying to get her fathers attention when he turned around and snapped at her. Unhappy with this response, his daughter asked him whether or not he remembered how she used to whine when she was 3 and 4?
She told him that when she turned 5 she decided to stop and if she was able to stop whining, then he was able to stop being a grouch!
This revelation of developing what was right, rather than fixating on what was wrong, sparked what Seligman would go on to promote during his career as APA presidentthat we should teach our children and ourselves to look at our strengths rather than our weaknesses .
Positive psychology can be viewed as the fourth wave in the evolution of psychology, the first 3 waves being, respectively, the disease model, behaviorism, and humanistic psychology.
This approach contrasts with how, in its early years , the practice of psychology focused mainly on cure and treatment of psychic ailments, which is a decidedly negative focus.
Some of the greatest names in the early field of psychology were foundational, such as Freud, Adler, and Jung. But over time, psychology began to acquire a negative outlook and stereotype, with its focus on the darkest chambers of the human mind and the near total exclusion of its sunlit highlands.

The Unconscious Mind
Although, Freud did not invent the idea of the unconscious versus the conscious mind, he made it popular by developing a model he called the topographical model of the mind. Freud , described the three levels of the mind, by using an analogy of an iceberg.
He explained that the conscious mind consists of all the mental processes of which individuals are aware, which is seen as the tip of the iceberg.
The Psyche
Following his theory of the unconscious mind, Freud , developed a more structural model of personality consisting of what he called the id, ego and the superego or the psychic apparatus, as he described it. He argued that personality is defined by those three stages.

Misunderstandings Of Basic Terms And Principles
Wundt’s terminology also created difficulties because he had from today’s point-of-view given some of his most important ideas unfortunate names so that there were constant misunderstandings. Examples include:
- physiological psychology specifically not a scientific physiological psychology, because by writing the adjective with a small letter Wundt wanted to avoid this misunderstanding that still exists today for him it was the use of physiological aids in experimental general psychology that mattered.
- Self-observation not naive introspection, but with training and experimental control of conditions.
- Experiment this was meant with reference to Francis Bacon general, i.e. far beyond the scientific rules of the empirical sciences, so not necessarily a statistically evaluated laboratory experiment. For Wundt psychological experimentation primarily served as a check of trained self-observation.
- Element not in the sense of the smallest structure, but as a smallest unit of the intended level under consideration, so that, for example, even the central nervous system could be an “element”.
- Völkerpsychologie cultural psychology not ethnology.
- Apperception not just an increase in attention, but a central and multimodal synthesis.
- Voluntaristic tendency, voluntarism not an absolute metaphysical postulate, but a primary empirically-psychologically based accentuation of motivated action against the intellectualism and cognitivism of other psychologists.
