What Style Should I Use

Harvard referencing tutorial

There are many different citation styles that continue to evolve as technology and varieties of resources increase. Generally, a citation style is established by a ruling body, typically one of a specific profession or subject area, and provides rules and conventions that best fit the types of sources used by that profession/ subject area.

While in school, you should use the style required by your assignment or professor.

Citation And Evaluation Of Sources

Citing Sources

Citation and referencing is a very important part of academic research. Not only does it give credit to the authors who did the work of creating information, it also evidences the work you have done in constructing your research, and builds the conversation network between researchers – inviting more and more voices into the interaction. For much of scientific writing you will be citing and referencing in the CSE style. Here are some tools & tips for citing in CSE Style:

The CSE citation style is based on Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, 8th edition produced by the Council of Science Editors, formally known as the Council of Biology Editors . The CSE format is often used by authors writing in the natural sciences including biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, and physics. The CSE style uses two different citation systems: the Name-Year system and the Citation-Sequence system. Make sure to verify if a specific system is required when using this CSE style.

  • CSE Citation Style – Quick GuideThis quick guide summarizes rules set out by the Council of Science Editors in Scientific Style and Format, sometimes known as the CSE style manual. In addition to providing formatting rules, it serves as a guideline for consistency among references and their in-text citations.

There are hundreds of different citation styles. Here is the same citation formatted in five different scientific citation styles. What if I don’t find the journal title I need to abbreviate?

Often journal titles that are one word do not get abbreviated so typically you will not see one word journal titles in journal title abbreviation lists. Check the journal’s website to see if they provide an abbreviation there. If you still cannot find an abbreviation, contact any University of Manitoba library for assistance either through the Ask Us chat service, email, phone, or in-person.

When Should I Cite A Source

    What is Plagiarism?

The DU Honor Code defines plagiarism as “including any representation of another’s work or ideas as one’s own in academic and educational submissions.”

At DU, plagiarism is seen as a form of academic misconduct and can result in severe consequences. These explanations of the most common types of plagiarism from Bowdoin College can help you learn to detect plagiarism in your own and other’s work.

To avoid plagiarism, cite sources when:

    • You directly quote a source
    • You paraphrase a source
    • You summarize someone else’s ideas in your own words
    • You draw on facts, information, or data from someone else
    • You want to add supplemental information not included in your paper, such as footnotes or endnotes

Note: You do not need to cite generally accepted knowledge. For more information, see Not-So-Common Knowledge.

A general rule of thumb is: “When in doubt, cite it.”

The text above is a direct quote from the Northern Arizona University e-Learning Center’s tutorial. The e-Learning Center was paraphrasing Princeton University’s guidelines.

    What is Plagiarism Detection Software?

DU uses a plagiarism detection software called VeriCite. When a student turns in a paper through Canvas, VeriCite checks the internet and many databases to see if anything has been copied from another persons work.

    Why Do You Need Citations

When you write your lab report, you will need to create a list of the References that you cite in your report. Here’s why:

    1. Shows the reader where you found your information

    2. Gives credit to the original author/researcher of a work you have consulted

    3. Allows others to find more information about your topic

    4.Helps prevent plagiarism

Works Cited Or References Vs Bibliography

The most common way to cite sources is to use a “Works Cited” or “References” list at the end of your research paper. “Works Cited” is the title of your list of citations when using the MLA format the title “References” is used when citing sources using APA style. The list includes a citation for each of the sources you used to write your paper. The citations are formatted in a consistent style according to whichever citation format is used. Many instructors specify which format they prefer some leave it up to the students as long as they maintain one consistent format.

A “Bibliography” is not the same as a “Works Cited” or “References” list. In your “Works Cited” or “References” you only list items you have actually cited in your paper. In a “Bibliography” you list all of the material you may have consulted in preparing your essay, whether or not you have actually cited the work. A “Bibliography” may include any sources related to the topic of the research paper.

The list of all citations is commonly organized in a single alphabetical list. Each different type of source–book, magazine article, journal article, newspaper article, article from a reference book, World Wide Web page–has a precise format that is specified by the given format .

How To Find Information About A Specific Journal’s Citation/reference Style

  • Search for the journal title in either the University of Manitoba Libraries’ One Stop Search or through Google.

  • On the journal’s website look for a section called either ‘Instructions to Authors’, ‘Manuscript’, or ‘Authors Information’. In this section should be information about how citations/references are formatted.

  • On the journal’s website look at a recent journal article published in the journal. Look at this recent journal article’s references section and in-text citations.

  • Ask yourself the following questions when looking at a sample journal article to figure out the journal’s citation/reference style:

  • How do in-text citations appear in a journal article from the journal? Do the in-text citations appear as numbers or names? You will look through the body of the journal article to answer these questions.
  • How does the reference section look like for a journal article from the journal? Is it called a references or literature cited or bibliography or something else? You will look at the end of the journal article to answer these questions.
  • How does a journal article reference look like? Are journal titles abbreviated? Is there any special formatting, such as bolding or italics? You will look at the references section of the journal article to answer these questions. Remember that journal articles often provide a journal volume, issue, and page range in the reference.

Why Do I Need To Cite My Sources

    Essay referencing styles apa

    Citing your sources is:

    • the smart thing to do: readers will consider your work more credible if they know where your information comes from.
    • the honest thing to do: it prevents plagiarism by giving credit to the original author of an idea.

Imagine research as a conversation — scholars are trading ideas back and forth and building on the findings of earlier work. Citing your sources is an important part of contributing to this conversation — it allows readers to understand how your work fits into the overall conversation.

Citing your sources in a standard style also helps readers tell at a glance what type of source you used , and it helps readers find and reference the sources you used.
