How To Organize Math Manipulatives Step : Decide On Storage

When it comes to storing your math manipulatives, you have so many options! But before purchasing any storage options, first you need to decide HOW you will store them.

For example, if you want to keep manipulatives readily available to students without having to do much distributing, your storage solution will look different than if you want to keep them all in a central place in the classroom.

How To Organize Math Manipulatives

If youve been with me for awhile, then you know that organization is my jam. And as an elementary math teacher, naturally I have a ton of math manipulatives floating around. Figuring out how to organize math manipulatives can be a challenge! They need to be easily accessible, but also out of the way. And often when manipulatives are used, they need to be distributed between all the students.

So, whats the best way to go about this? The good news is, there are lots of options! Im going to share with you a few different manipulative organization options to help you get started.

Arithmetic Vs Geometric Mean

How to find the median

For these applications, analysts tend to use the geometric mean, which is calculated differently. The geometric mean is most appropriate for series that exhibit serial correlation. This is especially true for investment portfolios.

Most returns in finance are correlated, including yields on bonds, stock returns, and . The longer the time horizon, the more critical compounding and the use of the geometric mean becomes. For volatile numbers, the geometric average provides a far more accurate measurement of the true return by taking into account year-over-year compounding.

The geometric mean takes the product of all numbers in the series and raises it to the inverse of the length of the series. Its more laborious by hand, but easy to calculate in Microsoft Excel using the GEOMEAN function.

The geometric mean differs from the arithmetic average, or arithmetic mean, in how it’s calculated because it takes into account the compounding that occurs from period to period. Because of this, investors usually consider the geometric mean a more accurate measure of returns than the arithmetic mean.

Similar Concepts Involving Averages

The weighted average calculator lets you assign weights to each number. A number weighting is an indicator of it’s importance. A common type of a weighted mean that is computed is the grade point average . To do this by hand, follow these steps:

  • Multiply the value of the letter grade by the number of credits in the class.
  • Do this for all the classes and take the sum.
  • Divide the sum by the total number of credits.
  • Suppose the grades are an A for a 3 credit class, two B’s for the 4 credit classes and a C for a 2 credit class. Using the standard value of 4 for an A, 3 for a B and 2 for a C, the grade point average is GPA = / = 40/13 = 3.08

Note that the average calculator will compute the average for all values that are weighted equally. For a weighted average, such as GPA and other statistical applications, the weighted average calculator linked above is the tool you want to use. In statistics the mean is known as a measure of central tendency.

Finding The Average And The Median

In todays post, were going to learn two basic concepts of statistics: average and median.

Imagine if we asked all of our classmates what grade their math grade was for this marking period. Assuming that there are 25 people in our class, well collect 25 numbers:

Its a little complicated to process the numbers if theyre jumbled like that, right? What would be the first thing youd do with these numbers? Id put them in order.

Now, lets take a closer look at a few things: a lot of my classmates got 5s or 6s:

and assuming that we needed a 5 to pass, only 7 students failed.

There are plenty of questions that we could ask ourselves regarding the information that we have on the class grades. The first question usually is: did the class get high grades in math or was that not the case? How can we know? We can know

    Isotopes And Mass Number

The mass number of an atom is the number of protons plus neutrons it has. Chromium , for example, has 24 protons and in its most stable form that is, the isotope that appears most often in nature it has 28 neutrons. Its mass number is thus 52.

Isotopes of an element are specified by their mass number when written out. Thus the isotope of carbon with 6 protons and 6 neutrons is carbon-12, whereas the heavier isotope with one additional neutron is carbon-13.

Most elements occur as a mixture of isotopes with one significantly predominating over the others in terms of “popularity.” For example, 99.76 percent of naturally occurring oxygen is oxygen-16. Some elements, however, such as chlorine and copper, show a wider distribution of isotopes.

How To Organize Math Manipulatives Step : Sort

Math Help : How to Calculate an Average

First things first before we figure out the best storage solution for our manipulatives, we need to sort them! We only want to organize exactly what we use. First, pull out ALL the math manipulatives you typically use during the year. Have a bunch of extras you dont need? Toss or donate them. No need for them to take up precious classroom space.

Once youve pared it down to only the manipulatives you actually need, pare it down some more! Have two class sets of Judy clocks? You probably only need one. 3 different sets of base-10 blocks? Ask yourself how many you really need and get rid of the rest.

As youre purging, consider how often you use the manipulatives and HOW you use them. Does each student need their own set, or can they share? If they need their own, how much do they really need to accomplish their tasks? Asking yourself these questions will help you narrow it down to what you really need.

Now that you truly have only what will be used, sort your manipulatives. Not just by type , but also by category. Group manipulatives used for certain topics together, like this:

    • Place value: base-10 blocks, place value disks
    • Addition & subtraction: base-10 blocks, place value disks, rekenreks, counters, linking cubes
    • Geometry: pattern blocks, geometric solids, geoboards
    • Fractions: pattern blocks, fraction strips
    • Measurement:rulers, scales, measuring cups, clocks

Once youve purged and sorted your manipulatives, you can move on to step 2!

    How To Calculate Average Mass

One of the common tasks you will have to perform as a budding scientist who is able to work with data is understanding the concept of an average. Often, you will encounter a sample of similar objects that differ according to a single characteristic you are studying, such as mass.

You may even have to calculate the average mass of a group of objects you cannot weigh directly, such as atoms.

Most of the 92 atoms that occur in nature come in two or more slightly different forms, called isotopes. Isotopes of the same element differ from each other only in the number of neutrons contained in their nuclei.

It can be useful to apply all of these principles together to come up with the average mass of a selection of atoms drawn from a known pool of different isotopes.

    Average Atomic Mass: Example

Chlorine-35 has an atomic mass of 34.969 amu and accounts for 75.77% of chlorine on Earth.

Chlorine-37 has an atomic mass of 36.966 amu and a percent abundance of 24.23%.

To calculate the average atomic mass of chlorine, use the information in a periodic table of the element to find the average but changing the percents to decimals:

How Do You Calculate An Average

The average is also called the ‘mean’ which is the sum of the values divided by the number of values used. It represents the number that all the values in the group would add up to if they were all the same number.

Say you want the average score for 17 students who took your art history exam. You add the 17 individual scores together. Then you divide this sum by 17, the number of scores being averaged. The answer you get is the average, or mean score on the exam.

An average may be an integer, a fraction, a mixed number, or a decimal number, and it could be positive, negative, or zero too, if some or all of the items in the group are zero or negative.

To calculate the average of a group of numerical items:

  • Add up all the items in the group.
  • Divide the sum by the number of items in the group.
  • The quotient is the average of the group.
  • Another Example:

Four students pick apples: one has 3, one has 4, one has 5, and one has 8.

To evenly divide the apples, you would find the average .

    3 + 4 + 5 + 8 = 20, divided by 4 students is 20/4 = 5 apples.

    What Is The Arithmetic Mean

    S293 Mean, Median, Mode

The arithmetic mean is the simplest and most widely used measure of a mean, or average. It simply involves taking the sum of a group of numbers, then dividing that sum by the count of the numbers used in the series. For example, take the numbers 34, 44, 56, and 78. The sum is 212. The arithmetic mean is 212 divided by four, or 53.

People also use several other types of means, such as the geometric mean and harmonic mean, which comes into play in certain situations in finance and investing. Another example is the trimmed mean, used when calculating economic data such as the consumer price index and personal consumption expenditures .

. Accordingly, how do you explain average in math?

In maths, the average value in a set of numbers is the middle value, calculated by dividing the total of all the values by the number of values. When we need to find the average of a set of data, we add up all the values and then divide this total by the number of values.

One may also ask, what is the range in math? The Range The Range is the difference between the lowest and highest values. Example: In the lowest value is 3, and the highest is 9. So the range is 9 3 = 6. It is that simple!

Likewise, people ask, how do you calculate a new average?

i.e. to calculate the new average after then nth number, you multiply the old average by n1, add the new number, and divide the total by n. In your example, you have the old average of 2.5 and the third number is 10.

How Do You Calculate Mean Vs Average

The mean is the average of the numbers and to calculate both averages and mean we need to add up all the values, then divide by the total number of values. In other words, it is the sum of the values divided by the count of the values. The formulas for both are more or less the same. Average = Mean = Sum/Count

    What Is The Average

ACT Math: How to Find Weighted Average?

Commonly known as “the mean”, the average is a mathematical term that refers to the sum of a set of numbers divided by the number of figures in the data set. In other words, it’s the central number that represents an overall data set. The average is also known as the “median” and “mode,” though these terms and calculations are used less often than the mean. For comparison purposes, the “mode” refers to the number in a data set that occurs most often and the “median” is the number in the middle of a data set when the data set is put in order. For our purposes, we’ll focus on the mean.

    Why Using Averages Is Bad

Whenever an average is taken into account to works with an uncertain quantity, remember that it ends up distorting the outcomes, the reason for this just because it ignores the impact of the inevitable variations. Averages routinely are something that gums up investments, accounting, sales, production planning, and even weather forecasting.

    Why Use A Rolling Average

A rolling average can help you find trends that would otherwise be hard to detect. Using the data from above, you get a graph that looks like this:

Thats not terribly helpful as a trend detector. It looks like my website got a case of the hiccups.

Use a rolling average, though, and you start to see a pattern emerge, with peaks happening more and more often:

Thats why rolling averages are so useful: Apply them at the right time and you can get an idea of emerging trends, even if those trends are happening because of sudden jumps in your data.

Ill stop there. Math-competent folk, feel free to leave endless comments about how I just mangled your favorite concept

Identify The Mode Of A Set Of Numbers

The average is one number in a set of numbers that is somehow typical of the whole set of numbers. The mean and median are both often called the average. Yes, it can be confusing when the word average refers to two different numbers, the mean and the median! In fact, there is a third number that is also an average. This average is the mode. The mode of a set of numbers is the number that occurs the most. The frequency, is the number of times a number occurs. So the mode of a set of numbers is the number with the highest frequency.

    Definition: mode

The mode of a set of numbers is the number with the highest frequency.

Suppose Jolene kept track of the number of miles she ran since the start of the month, as shown in Figure 5.7.

    Figure 5.7

If we list the numbers in order it is easier to identify the one with the highest frequency.

Jolene ran 8 miles three times, and every other distance is listed only once. So the mode of the data is 8 miles.

HOW TO: IDENTIFY THE MODE OF A SET OF NUMBERS

Step 1. List the data values in numerical order.

Step 2. Count the number of times each value appears.

Step 3. The mode is the value with the highest frequency.

    Example \:

The ages of students in a college math class are listed below. Identify the mode.

    18, 18, 18, 18, 19, 19, 19, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 21, 21, 22, 22, 22, 22, 22, 23, 24, 24, 25, 29, 30, 40, 44

    Solution

    Exercise \:

    The number of sick days employees used last year: 3, 6, 2, 3, 7, 5, 6, 2, 4, 2. Identify the mode.

    Answer

Find The Sum Of The Data Set

    Interactive Math Lesson

The second step in calculating the average is determining the sum of a data set. This can be done by a calculator, by hand, by using a spreadsheet or via an online calculator. For example, let’s say you’re taking the sum of the following numbers: 2, 3, 4 and 5. This means you’ll be adding each of these numbers together to reach the sum of 14.
