What Math Should An 11th Grader Know

Introduction to Math for 11th Grade

Typically, students in grade 11 take Algebra II . However, some students may be able to take Algebra I while still in 8th grade. In those cases, both 11th and 12th grade become open for advanced math options.

At the beginning of 11th grade, a lot of the foundations of Algebra are assumed to have already been mastered. With our 11th grade math curriculum, your junior student will learn:

  • How to solve equations using quadratics and complex numbers.
  • How to represent relationships between quantities using variables, equations, and inequalities.
  • Proper operations on polynomials, including exponents and multiple variables.
  • How to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational functions and radical functions.
  • To evaluate and graph trigonometric functions.
  • How to use statistics and probability to represent and interpret data.
  • About graphing logarithmic and trigonometric functions.
  • How to represent relationships between quantities using mathematical modeling.
  • Understand how to use a graphing calculator.

For some high school students, math is the bane of their existence. Others love numbers, logic, and how they can apply mathematical concepts to the real world.

But no matter which category you fall into, youll have to deal with math classes in high school. That said, not everyone has to take all the math classes available or reach the same levels.

Which math classes are common in high school curricula? And which ones do you actually need to take? Keep reading to find out.

Standard High School Math Curriculum

Most high schools require students to take three years of math in order to graduate and recommend taking four years. These requirements often also include completing an algebra class and a geometry class.

Forty-five states have agreed to follow Common Core standards for math, which aim to create a more standardized math curriculum across the country. The Common Core standards state that six content categories should be covered in high school math classes:

  • Algebra
  • Pre-Calculus
  • Calculus

However, this order is definitely not set in stone. Some schools teach algebra 1 and 2 back-to-back then move on to geometry, some schools include trigonometry with geometry or pre-calculus instead of algebra 2, and some students take pre-algebra or a similar course if they need to strengthen their math skills before taking algebra 1. However, most high schools follow a course order similar to the one above for their math classes.

The math class you take freshman year will be chosen based on your previous math classes and any placement tests you may have taken before starting high school. So, if you already took algebra 1 in 8th grade, you may be able to start with geometry as a freshman and continue down the list from there. Also, not every high school student takes pre-calculus or calculus.

Now Into The Back Half Of High School Junior Year Is The Time For Students To Take The Steps Necessary To Either Improve Or Solidify Their Collegiate Applications

All students as juniors should be taking classes in the following areas:

English, math, science, social science, and foreign language. Most students will take Algebra 2, Trigonometry, or Pre-Calculus for math, Biology, Chemistry, or Physics for science, and United Stated History as their social science.

In October, all 11th graders should take the PSAT/NMSQT®.

Students looking to apply to the most competitive colleges should also explore taking SAT® Subject Tests as juniors.

It is important to note that the Subject Test expectations for each college are different, so it is important for students to consult with their guidance/college counselor when deciding which exams to take. For students taking Advanced Placement exams junior year, it’s a good idea to take that particular SAT® Subject Test at or near the same time as the Advanced Placement exam, so that the student can take both exams when their subject area expertise is at its peak.

Continue participation in extracurriculars and potentially ascend into leadership roles.

For students that have not participated in extracurricular activities to this point in time, it is important to get involved to both build their leadership skills and to enrich their college applications.

In the United States, a student at this grade may also be referred as a junior .

Mathematics students usually take algebra II, but classes like trigonometry or pre-calculus are sometimes offered for students who wish to take Advanced Placement math classes their senior year. Depending on the location there may be a combination of any of the listed subjects. They may also take easier courses such as algebra I and geometry if they do not have the required prerequisites for the more advanced courses that are listed above.

In English class, a college-preparatory curriculum would also include American literature. Often, English literature is taught in the junior year of high school.

In a social studies curriculum, eleventh graders in the United States are usually taught US history or the world from the 1870s to the 21st Century. They may also learn more advanced world culture and geography knowledge along with some more advanced social studies such as psychology and government.

Best Electives To Take In High School

Because course offerings frequently depend on school location and district budget, not all classes will be offered at all schools. However, studies have shown that fostering creativity is key to growing future success. Students should choose a creative class that will help them see the world from a different perspective.

Students who like performing or who see themselves as a performer, or even a lawyer, as their future career should take Drama I. Studying theater will help students with public speaking skills as well as reading skills. Some classes even build theatrical sets, giving students the chance to exercise their visual creativity as well as their performance skills.

Some of the best electives to take in high school are foreign languages. Not only is high school foreign language required for many college applications foreign language helps students see their worlds from a more global perspective. Studying a foreign language fosters cultural understanding. It helps students develop higher-level speaking and writing skills, too.

Some classes offer vocational courses as electives, too. Students can take these ninth grade electives, and by the time they finish high school, they will have a certification in a real-world skill. For example, some schools offer courses that help students become certified nursing assistants.

For students that have received lower marks during the first two years of high school, it is now or never to take steps to improve their grades. For students that are able to develop the content and skills mastery to improve their academics, colleges do take into consideration the trend in student grades over the course of high school.

Look at the chart below to see the math class that your child is taking in eighth grade. Then look to see the order of classes they can take in high school. For example, if they take eighth grade math then they start in freshman Algebra 1-2. If they take Algebra in eighth grade then they start in Geometry as a freshman.

There are regular, honors and AP classes in high school math. Honors classes are more challenging than regular classes. Students who take honors classes can get a higher grade point average in high school. Colleges look at high school GPA to decide who will be admitted, what classes they will take, and who will get scholarships. Advanced Placement classes offer an AP exam. The exam is usually at the end of the school year. If a student gets a high enough score then they can get college credit for it.
