How Long Is The Ap Human Geography Exam

The AP Human Geography exam is split up into two sections that are each worth 50% of the total score.

The first section is an hour-long 60-question multiple choice test. This means you get, on average, one minute per question in the test.

There are two different types of multiple choice questions on the AP exam: individual questions and set-based questions. Set-based questions are a series of questions focused around a single topic.

The set-based format for the multiple choice test per the College Board is:

  • Of the 60 questions, there will be 58 sets that will each include 23 questions with a quantitative or qualitative source.
  • At least 1 of these sets will include a paired set of sources.

Per the College Board, 30%40% of the multiple-choice questions will reference stimulus material, including maps, tables, charts, graphs, images, infographics, and/or landscapes, roughly evenly divided between quantitative and qualitative sources.

The second section is 75 minutes long and features three free-response questions that are graded based on the presence of keywords and illustrative examples. This means you will have 25 minutes to spend on each of the long form questions.

Each of the free-response questions will have the following focus:

  • Describe, explain, apply geographic situation or scenario
  • Describe, explain, apply geographic data using data, image, or map
  • Describe, explain, apply geographic data using data, image, and/or map
  • The total exam time is 2 hours and 15 minutes.

    What Happens If You Fail Ap Human Geography

    Should you fail the AP® Human Geography exam, stay calm and understand that this is something you can easily fix.;

    The AP® Human Geography exam is given once every year in May. You can take the exam as often as you like in order to pass or in an attempt to get a higher score. Youll just need to pay the exam fee each time you retake the exam.

    Your high school GPA will likely not be impacted at all if you fail the AP® Human Geography exam. Most schools dont use your AP® exam scores as part of your overall course grades. Grades are based on a combination of coursework and class tests, so as long as youve scored well on those, your GPA will be fine.

    If you fail the AP® Human Geography exam, you will not receive college credit for the course. Most colleges will not award college credit for any score lower than a 3 . If college credit is your goal and you failed or scored lower than a 3, you will need to retake the exam.

    Some students are concerned with how failing the AP® Human Geography exam will reflect on their college admissions process. As the student, you are in control of where your AP® scores are sent, so you can decide who sees these scores. If you do end up sending a low or failing score to a college, you can often have that score replaced with a higher score when you retake the exam.;;

    Take Official Practice Exams

    There’s no better form of practice than using official test questions, which is why you should take a practice Human Geography exam to start off your studying. This will not only allow you to predict your scores on the real test but will also help you make an informed decision about how much more you need to study in order to reach your goals.

    You might find that you have trouble on certain types of questions that you didn’t expect to be a problem. A careful analysis of your mistakes on practice tests will ensure that you only revisit content that has the potential to trip you up on the exam .

    How Does Your School Affect Which Ap Tests Are Easiest

    Another important factor to consider is your school and teachers. For example, if there is a teacher at your school who has taught AP US History for 10 years, has their curriculum down pat, and has a higher passing rate than the national average, you’ll have a high shot of passing, even though AP US History has one of the lowest national passing rates.

    This can even be true of other AP classes considered tough by reputation, like AP Physics, AP Biology, and AP English Literature.

    This also means that if you take an AP class from a teacher who has never taught it before, you might have to plan on doing more studying on your own. The new teacher might not have as much experience with timing the curriculum or working practice tests into their class schedules.

    Don’t underestimate the importance of practice tests!

    So this means when signing up for AP classes, don’t just look at what your school offers. Try to find out who teaches it and figure out their reputation. But how can you do this?

    #1: Ask your guidance counselor. They should know about how many students take the AP class every year, what the teacher’s exam pass rate is, and if they notice students switching out of the class often. That could be a sign the course is challenging or students don’t do well with the teacher.
