Coyne College is one of Chicagos top skilled trade education institutions and is proud to offer two programs for aspiring electrical workers: electrical construction and planning and electrical construction maintenance.

Coyne College offers both programs during days and nights to help accommodate the busy schedules of its students. Both programs are offered at the Coyne College campus, located in the heart of the Chicago Loop at the intersection of State and Madison Streets.

The electrical construction and planning programs curriculum is more extensive than that of the electrical construction maintenance program and can be completed in as few as 78 weeks. The electrical construction and maintenance program, on the other hand, also prepares you to enter the field, but can be finished in 42 to 56 weeks, depending on whether you take day or night classes.

As a student in either of Coyne Colleges electrical programs, you will be submerged in classes such as:

  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Electrical Test and Equipment Safety
  • Electrical Construction Residential

What Does It Take To Become An Electrician The Education And Certification Process

Being an electrician can offer a hands-on occupation with good wages and a high level of job security. Licensed electricians, known in the industry as journeymen electricians, can take on most electrical projects and may decide to work for a company or to be self-employed.

    Calculating Currents And Voltages

    Electricians must always consider voltage, current and resistance. Voltage is what makes electric charges move. It is the push that drives charges around in an electric circuit. Current can be considered as the speed at which the charges move, or the rate of flow of charge, measured in amps. Resistance is just as it sounds, the resistive force the wire provides, against the flow of charge.

    A wire conducts electricity just like a pipe carries water. Push too much water through a pipe and it will burst. When a current is too great, similarly to the pipe, the wire may fail overheating, melting and potentially causing a fire.

    To accommodate for higher currents, electricians must increase the size of the wire. The larger the diameter of the wire the more current it can conduct however larger wire is expensive so an electrician will need to determine the right wire gauge for any job.

    Maintenance electricians usually have regular work which they complete in a typical 40-hour week. Most keep regular business hours on weekdays and dont usually work on weekends, public holidays, or late at night.     Electricians use simple math, like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, to perform routine measurements and calculations at work.

    You’d be working with fractions, percentages, and decimals to figure out things like room dimensions, wiring lengths, convert watts to kilowatts, and calculate loads.

    For example, load calculations typically involve converting percentages to decimals or whole numbers .

    And then, the electrician would multiply that number by the value of the load to figure out what size circuit breaker or fuse is needed. Sound complicated? It’s really not.

    Once you’re applying the math to real-world electrical work, it becomes much easier to grasp than typical questions you’d see in a high school math classroom. Before you know it, it’s second nature.

    Electrical Formulas Made Easy

    Not every day will include working with complicated electrical formulas, but there will times during your career as an electrician when you will have to do some calculations.

    This is true regardless of which type of electrician job you choose. Your classroom training will include units on these formulas, and you will likely be asked to either explain or calculate some formulas on the final licensing exam.
