What Ap Physics Classes Are Offered

    All Mechanics Multiple Choice Solutions

The AP Program used to offer three physics classes: AP Physics B, AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism.

However, the AP program recently replaced AP Physics B, a one-year course, with two one-year courses: AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2. These are both algebra-based physics courses, which means they don’t require a math background beyond Algebra II.

The AP program still offers AP Physics C, which is broken into two courses and exams: Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism. Many schools teach these as the same class, or just teach one topic. Both of these courses are calculus-based.

This means that there are now four AP Physics exams:

    • AP Physics 1
    • AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
    • AP Physics C: Mechanics

The fact that there are now four AP Physics exams can be confusing. So do you take Physics 1, Physics 2, and Physics C in order? What’s new about Physics 1 and Physics 2? We will introduce you to all of the courses and help you decide which class is right for you.

Ap Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism

The AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism course is by far the most technically complex of the AP Physics courses. Beginning with electrostatics, the course includes a detailed look at charges, electric forces, electric fields, electric potential, and capacitors. These concepts are then applied to an analysis of electrical circuits, including circuits with multiple sources of potential difference, real and ideal batteries, and transient analyses of circuits which include capacitors.

From there, the course transitions into a look at magnetism, with a strong focus on the relationships between electricity and magnetism as Maxwells Equations are investigated. Its typically in this section that students really begin to challenge themselves, applying fundamental relationships to problems of increasing sophistication and technical complexity. With the added knowledge of magnetism, inductors are also discussed and tied back into the analysis of electrical circuits.

As you can see from the course descriptions, both of the AP Physics C courses are quite limited in scope, allowing for a much deeper exploration of the fundamental relationships and their application to various problems and situations.

    How Are Ap Exams Formatted

Some students want to know more than simply how long is the AP Chem exam, APUSH, and so on. For them, we have compiled an overview of AP exam formats.

For the most part, AP exams begin with multiple-choice questions and conclude with a free response section. Additionally, a few exams include alternative question formats:

    • Several AP history exams include short answer segments.
    • Most language exams include a speaking component.
    • The exams for AP Chinese and AP Japanese include several tasks, such as narrating a story or writing an email.
    • AP Computer Science Principles involves two multi-hour tasks in addition to the exam, such as developing a computer program.
    • AP Drawing and the AP Studio Art exams require portfolios rather than exams.
    • AP Research and AP Seminar are not assessed with a traditional AP exam.

Who Should Take Ap Physics 1 What Sort Of Students May Like It More Than Others

AP® Physics 1 is considered an introductory physics course, so it is a good choice for a variety of students. One the one hand, it is a good early course for students who are either starting their physics education and plan to go on to either of the Physics C courses.

On the other hand, it is also a good course for students who want to take a challenging AP® science course but dont necessarily want to major in science or engineering in college. Students who fall into this category typically choose to take the course later in high school.

AP® Physics 1 will cover both text based work and hands-on laboratory work. Students in this class will learn about systems, fields, force interactions, change, conservation and waves. If these topics interest you and you have taken Algebra II, you would be a good candidate to take AP® Physics I. You can learn more about the content of the AP® Physics 1 course in the course overview.

Since you are not required to take AP® Physics I, you will want to explore other AP® courses to make sure that AP® Physics 1 is the right course for you. If the subject matter does not align with your interests and strengths, you should choose a different AP® course that interests you.

If scoring a 5 on your AP® exams is a goal, you will want to approach AP® Physics 1 with caution. This course has one of the lowest percentages of students who scored a 5 in 2019n at 6.7%. The overall passing rate is also lower than average, at 45.4%.

    Take Another Practice Test

After youve completed an initial review of the material and the test, take another practice test to evaluate your progress. You should see a steady progression of knowledge, and be able to identify which areas have improved the most and which areas still need improvement. If you have time, repeat each of the steps above to incrementally increase your score.

    Ap Social Studies Exams

For the multiple-choice section of most social studies AP tests, you’ll have to work quickly. US Government asks 60 questions in 45 minutes, AP Psychology asks 100 multiple-choice questions in 70 minutes, and both World History and US History ask 55 questions in 55 minutes. You are responsible for more than one question a minute .

While the questions are often more straightforward than AP English questions you will have fewer blocks of text to break downyou will have to strike a balance between moving fast enough to answer as many questions as possible but not going so fast you make silly mistakes.

For free response, US Government gives 100 minutes for four responses . World History and US History require three short-response answers in 40 minutes followed by a 60 minute DBQ and a 40 minute essay.

While these times are variable, note that the longest you get for a response is 60 minutesand that’s for the ultra-complicated DBQ, which requires you to read and process multiple documents before weaving them together in a comprehensive essay. In all cases, you have to be able to move quickly through the organizing stage to have enough time to draft and edit your responses. Feeling the pressure yet?
