Lightning discharges may occur between areas of cloud without contacting the ground. When it occurs between two separate clouds, it is known as cloud-to-cloud or inter-cloud lightning when it occurs between areas of differing electric potential within a single cloud, it is known as intra-cloud lightning. IC lightning is the most frequently occurring type.

IC lightning most commonly occurs between the upper anvil portion and lower reaches of a given thunderstorm. This lightning can sometimes be observed at great distances at night as so-called “sheet lightning“. In such instances, the observer may see only a flash of light without hearing any thunder.

Another term used for cloudâcloud or cloudâcloudâground lightning is “Anvil Crawler”, due to the habit of charge, typically originating beneath or within the anvil and scrambling through the upper cloud layers of a thunderstorm, often generating dramatic multiple branch strokes. These are usually seen as a thunderstorm passes over the observer or begins to decay. The most vivid crawler behavior occurs in well developed thunderstorms that feature extensive rear anvil shearing.

Droplets Become Electrically Polarized

The droplets of ice and rain become electrically polarized as they fall through the atmosphere’s natural electric field. That means that one side of the droplet or ice particle has a positive electrical charge and the other side has a negative charge.

When these polarized raindrops and ice particles come close to each other or collide, they become charged by electrostatic induction. The smaller particles gain positive electrical charges and larger particles gain negative charges.

How To Survive A Lightning Strike

If unfortunately you are in flat lands during a thunderstorm remember that you are one of the shortest possible routes for charges to discharge. Laying flat on ground wont work as lightning can hit the ground and first and then your body. Avoid standing under trees, poles, any sort of tall conducting pointy things. Its just safe to be indoors during a thunderstorm.

    All thunderstorms go through stages of growth, development, electrification and dissipation. Thunderstorms often begin to develop early in the day when the sun heats the air near the ground and pockets of warmer air start to rise in the atmosphere. When these pockets of air reach a certain level in the atmosphere, cumulus clouds start to form. Continued heating causes these clouds to grow vertically into the atmosphere. These “towering cumulus” clouds may be one of the first signs of a developing thunderstorm. The final stage of development occurs as the top of the cloud becomes anvil-shaped.

    As a thunderstorm cloud grows, precipitation forms within the cloud. A well-developed thunderstorm cloud contains mostly small ice crystals in the upper levels of the cloud, a mixture of small ice crystals and small hail in the middle levels of the cloud, and a mixture of rain and melting hail in the lower levels of the cloud. Air movements and collisions between the various types of precipitation in the middle of the cloud cause the precipitation particles to become charged. The lighter ice crystals become positively charged and are carried upward into the upper part of the storm by rising air.

Although it is shocking, we have just experienced lightning on a much smaller scale. How is lightning formed outside? Within a cloud, ice crystals bounce off each other creating charged particles.

    Positively charged particles rise to the top of the cloud while the negatively charged particles sink to the bottom of the cloud. On the ground there is a negative charge but when a thunderstorm passes over, the ground becomes positively charged. If you were standing in a positively charged area, your hair would stand up and you would be in danger of being struck by lightning.

    The first action from the lightning occurs when a stepped leader appears from the base of the cloud. This leader reaches the ground in one-hundredth of a second.

    The second part is the action of streamers, positively charged ions that rush up to meet the stepped leader. When they meet the negative charge comes down to the ground and the return stroke begins, which only lasts a tenth of a second.

    Once the connection is made, other stepped leaders may travel that same path, which to an observer would look like the bolt of lightning was pulsing or gives a strobe affect.

    The upper cloud and lower cloud are good conductors of electricity. So the electric current easily flows inside the cloud.

    On the other hand, the air is a poor conductor of electricity. So the air does not allow charge transfer between the upper cloud and lower cloud. Thus, air acts as a barrier to the charge transfer between the clouds.

    However, the air allows the electric field exerted by the upper cloud and lower cloud. Thus, there exists an electric field between the upper cloud and lower cloud.

    In order to over the insulating barrier of the air, a tremendous amount of charge has to build on the upper and lower cloud.

    When the upper and lower cloud stores a tremendous amount of charge, they overcome the insulating barrier from the air. As a result, the charge is transferred between the clouds. The lightning we see in the sky is due to this charge transfer.

    The electric field “looks” for a doorknob. Sort of. It looks for the closest and easiest path to release its charge. Often lightning occurs between clouds or inside a cloud.

    But the lightning we usually care about most is the lightning that goes from clouds to groundbecause that’s us!

    As the storm moves over the ground, the strong negative charge in the cloud attracts positive charges in the ground. These positive charges move up into the tallest objects like trees, telephone poles, and houses. A “stepped leader” of negative charge descends from the cloud seeking out a path toward the ground. Although this phase of a lightning strike is too rapid for human eyes, this slow-motion video shows it happening.

    As the negative charge gets close to the ground, a positive charge, called a streamer, reaches up to meet the negative charge. The channels connect and we see the lightning stroke. We may see several strokes using the same path, giving the lightning bolt a flickering appearance, before the electrical discharge is complete.

    What’s Happening Within The Cloud

    As ice crystals high within a thunderstorm flow up and down in the turbulent air, they crash into each other. Small negatively charged particles called electrons are knocked off some ice crystals and added to other ice crystals as they crash past each other. This separates the positive and negative charges of the cloud. The top of the cloud becomes positively charged with particles called protons, while the base of the cloud becomes negatively charged.
