Geometry: Seeing Doing Understanding Third Edition

With Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding, Harold Jacobs has managed to write a user-friendly geometry text that is heavy on logic and proofs. This is one book where you dont want to skip the introduction that fills students in on the influence of Euclid and teaches them the basics of construction with a straight edge and compass.

In the third edition , the first chapter is an introduction to vocabulary, tools, and basic ideas of geometry. This chapter ends with a lesson titled, We Cant Go On Like This, a lesson that takes students through some intriguing problems to demonstrate the practical necessity for learning;geometry along with a deeper understanding of why and how it works. For example, the first set of problems harkens back to ancient Egypt where three Egyptians purchase plots of land. The tax assessor is using a formula for the area of a quadrilateral that was used by the ancient Egyptians to determine the area of each plot for tax purposes. The rest of the problems have students determine the actual area of each plot, then compare that with the area determined by the assessor’s formula. The final question in that section asks, “Which one of the three is cheated the most by the tax assessor’s formula? Why?”

Problems from old SAT tests are interspersed throughout the exercises. They are labeled as such, but students need to be aware that these problems are not from current versions of the tests.

Geometry: Seeing Doing Understanding

Now in third edition and being published by Master Books, this newest version of Jacobs Geometry: Seeing, Doing, and Understanding preserves all the features that have made his text so popular with educators in the past. Like previous editions, this text stresses logic and deductive reasoning but does not take a “discovery” approach. This is an excellent geometry course with clear explanations of geometric concepts that include practice with proofs . Please note: instructional content of this version including answers and solutions is mostly identical to the content of the older, out-of-print version published by W. H. Freeman & Co.

The full color Student Text offers a thorough study of Euclidean geometry beginning with an introduction to geometry then topics builds incrementally – nature of deductive reasoning, lines & angles, congruence, inequalities, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, transformations, area, similarity, right triangle, circles, concurrence theorems, regular polygons and the circle, geometric solids, and non-Euclidean Geometries. Each chapter ends with review and a midterm and final review. For every lesson, there are three sets of exercises – all three practice the concepts presented, but the third set may offer a bit more challenge. Each exercise assumes knowledge gained in previous lessons in order to construct proofs. An appendix containing a glossary, all presented theorems, postulates, and formulas, and selected answers to exercises is most helpful.

Why WinterPromise Loves Jacobs Geometry!

Here are;the reasons;why WinterPromise recommends Jacobs Geometry for High School students above many others!

  • Introduces concepts and ideas with engaging stories, comics & illustrations. Math can be very dry especially at more advanced levels like High School math. This program does a great job of introducing each lesson with a story or illustration. Throughout the resource there;are full-color illustrations to not only introduce the idea but to illustrate the idea further and teach. This goes a long way to help teach math in an engaging way.

Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding by Harold Jacobs presents a revolutionary approach to teaching geometry. The subtitle Seeing, Doing, Understanding reveals the sequence of teaching presented in this course. With thousands of photographs, diagrams, and figures the student is presented with a visual feast illustrating the subject matter in a dynamic way that does not require long pages of explanation. After engaging with the material visually, the learner is directed to relevant, practical, real-life exercises that help the student practice the new concepts directly. This process of seeing and doing leads to the ultimate goal in mathematics: understanding.

Harold Jacobs Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding third edition is a Euclidean geometry textbook meant for a high school geometry course typically grade That price alone tells you about the popularity of this book. Of course Jacobs’ Geometry isn’t popular without a reason. I will strive to explain here why people like it so well. First of all, it has to do with Jacobs’ writing style: he clearly loves geometry and mathematics himself, and writes about it in an interesting and humorous way.

Review Of Harold Jacobs Geometry: Seeing Doing Understanding

Harold Jacobs Geometry: Seeing, Doing, Understanding is a Euclidean geometry textbook meant for a high school geometry course .

I had been wanting to get a copy of this book for years, and I kept looking if I could find a used copy for $10-$20 somewhere. But after several years, I decided that just wasn’t going to happen, and got me a used copy for what they generally sell: between $30-$50. That price alone tells you about the popularity of this book.

Of course Jacobs’ Geometry isn’t popular without a reason. I will strive to explain here why people like it so well.

First of all, it has to do with Jacobs’ writing style: he clearly loves geometry himself, and writes about it in an interesting and humorous way. Every new lesson starts out with some clever notion of that particular geometric topic taken from real life, often from cartoons. So… it is not written as a “facts book” alone, but as a book that you enjoy reading through, even if you weren’t studying geometry.

And secondly, the exercises. It is here that Jacobs really exceeds. A tremendous portion of the exercises are tied in with real-life examples and illustrations, which makes them more interesting than regular textbook exercises. They often cite old math books or math books from other cultures, or come from art, architecture, nature, illusions, sports, chemistry, geography, astronomy, etc.

Below you can see an example of the colorful exercises, often tied to real-life. Click to enlarge the image.

When Stephanie and Melissa finished Saxon Algebra 1 and started into Saxon Algebra 2 it didn’t go well. Wisely, Linda decided to hold off on Algebra 2 and use Geometry by Harold Jacobs instead. After completing this course, they again started Saxon Algebra 2, follwed by Saxon Advanced Math, and did quite well. In fact, Stephanie scored a 30 on her ACT test in math, the highest math score that any of our children attained on the test. Why the turnaround? Was it just an extra year of maturity, or was it the way that Harold Jacobs presented the material that helped math to “gel” in their minds?

    What About Proofs

It is easy to notice that the exercises rarely ask the student to write a complete proof on his own. Instead, most of the proofs in the exercises ask the student to give the reasons for the statements, or ask why something is this way or that.

I am sure that some educators object to this book because of this fact. But, writing complete proofs has always been a big problem for a lot of high school students. Jacobs is NOT omitting deductive reasoning nor proofs… but they are handled in a way that helps students get used to proofs little by little.

Besides asking students to complete the reasons for statements in proofs, Jacobs often asks, “What can you conclude about…?” Then there are many, many “why” questions in the exercises. So, a lot of the exercises have to do with deductive reasoning and with proofs, just not asking students often to write the complete proofs.

Also, the second chapter of the book is titled “The Nature of Deductive Reasoning”. It has lessons about conditional statements, direct proof, indirect proof, and a deductive system. After that, if you look closely, the whole book IS indeed written as a deductive, formal system of geometry that starts form postulates and proves the theorems used . However, I would say that the emphasis of this book is definitely on applications, understanding the theorems, and deductive reasoning, but not on the nature of the deductive system as a whole.
