Complete A Doctorate Degree

At the doctorate degree level, you can choose between the Ph.D., which is a research degree, and the Psy.D., which is a clinical degree. As such, you need to already have a good idea of what you want to do once you graduate. It is incredibly hard to be accepted into these programs. In fact, on average, only 3% of applicants are matriculated into the programs. This is why it is so important to set yourself apart as an extraordinary student at bachelors and masters level.

The Ph.D. in clinical psychology usually takes four to five years to complete. To graduate, you will have to complete an internship, which is generally at least one year in length. You will also have to complete a dissertation and defend it, as well as pass a range of examinations.

A student registered for a 180-credit structured coursework masters degree must complete the study programme within three years. A student may make application to the Registrar for one additional year of study. The Registrar will consult with the Executive Dean of the College in which the student is registered.

• Depending on the need for scholarship funding, the student, with the assistance of his/her supervisor, will submit the program of research as part of a fellowship application , typically due late in September.
• As part of Psych 621:2, each second-year student makes an oral presentation on his/her research and answers questions from the faculty and students.

Clinical Training In Year 4

• Note about Psych 727: Efficacy and Program Evaluation: If this required course, offered in alternating years, was not offered in the students third year, it will need to be taken in Year 4.
• Senior students further expand their knowledge of psychotherapy by learning principles and techniques of Emotion-Focused Therapy .
• Choice of caseload composition: We allow students in their fourth and fifth years to select the age composition of their clinical work. Students may choose any of the following possibilities: the usual regimen of two adult cases and one child case two child cases and one adult case, all adult cases or all child cases. This important choice should reflect the particular students internship and career goals.
• Students who choose to see child therapy cases exclusively should not enrol in Psych 733A, B, & C. Students who choose to see adult cases exclusively should not enrol in Psych 732A, B, & C.

A PhD in clinical psychology is a degree that allows you to work in the highest levels of the field. Second Year Project

The second year project involves designing, conducting, and writing up an empirical study which is approved by the students 2nd year project committee. The committee consists of two members: the research advisor and one other faculty member with a full, research, joint, or adjunct appointment in the Department who is chosen by the student after consulting with the research advisor. At least one member of the committee must be from the core clinical faculty. Any joint or adjunct faculty member must be approved by the Director of Clinical Training . Students are advised to discuss the project with both committee members as early in the development of the project as possible and to confirm in writing all understandings reached. These discussions should include the substance of the project as well as the expectations of the committee members regarding a proposal . Upon completion of the project, the student will submit a manuscript in APA format to the committee for its approval. Approval forms may be obtained from, and must be returned to, the Psychology Graduate office. A l0-15 minute oral presentation of the 2nd year project to the clinical faculty and students is required at the end of the spring semester of the second year. Departmental: Faculty maintain active laboratories for research and graduate training . Clinical facilities include the Krasner Psychological Center and its affiliate, the Anxiety Disorders Clinic, which are training, research, and service units that provide psychological services and consultation to the community and campus, and the University Marital Therapy Clinic that provides consultation, assessment, and therapy for couples and individuals in the community who are experiencing relationship difficulties and serves as a center for research evaluation of couples.
