The Basis For Writing A Psychological Assessment Report

The assessment report of the psychologist is written on the basis of a strict psychodiagnostic examination of the client, compiled and conducted according to particular rules. It is impossible to write the assessment on the basis of the psychologists subjective view of the client after psychological counseling. It is technically possible to write it, but the value of such a psychological opinion tends to be zero. The subjectivism of the psychologist, multiplied by laziness, will naturally lead to an inaccurate assessment. At the departments of psychology, we strongly recommend studying psychodiagnostics for anyone interested in writing a high-quality psychological assessment. We will focus on the main points:

  • Do not use non-professional tests. They are good for entertainment, but the value and availability of psychodiagnostic information obtained through non-professional tests tends to be nonexistent. A psychologist who respects himself or herself and the client does not use non-professional tests.
  • Do not complete the tests in inappropriate conditions: between work, at home, etc. Any normal person can easily be declared insane if you show him or her tests in inappropriate conditions and at the wrong time. You will not get accurate and valid results if you fill out tests in the wrong conditions.
  • Now, lets find out how to write a psychological assessment. We should remind that our proposed method is not a standard or a role model, but simply a practical method.

What Is The Purpose Of A Psychological Assessment

Psychological assessments and reports can give an understanding of mental discomfort, pain and illness an individual may be experiencing. They can provide valuable information about self-perception, cognitive thinking and behavioural analysis of the ways individuals may think, process and apply information to real-life situations.

Understanding these factors can be of huge benefit to an individual as understanding the manner in which your thought process works, the way you apply information to real-life problems and the way you deal with emotions and feelings can provide an objective view of your cognitive thinking.

This objective view will enable you to see what is benefiting you and what is not.

A psychological assessment may also assist in developing different methods in approaching real-life issues that can be discomforting.

We often see clients with family problems, relationship problems, and severe stress often related to work, school or their social life.

In situations like these, a psychological assessment may allow a better understanding of why clients may be experiencing stress in these domains of life and help develop methods to manage these stresses.

Other purposes of a psychological assessment include for psychological court reports, medico-legal reports, psychometric assessment for autism, cognitive assessments, psychological testing for ADHD, using psychometric testing including WISC, WAIS and V.

Why Should We Have To Undergo A Psychological Assessment

There are various reasons why we have to undergo a psychological assessment. Sometimes we have difficulties and we have to take the psychological testing to assess the problem that we are having. We can know if we are struggling with a mental problem. We can provide the right solutions for it. We can make solutions before it is too late. When a person starts to have struggles with his thoughts, and can notice unusual behavior with himself, it is time for him to seek help before the problem gets worse. It is not usual to have unusual attitudes, so we have to take a psychological test to ensure that our mental health is not in danger. Aside from these things, a psychological assessment is needed in different situations like as evidence in the court or a test that we should take in the recruitment process in an employment. When our behaviour is needed to be examined, we have to undergo a psychological assessment. It is not bad. We will know the extent of our behaviour and we can be released with the mental stress. We can know if we have a mental problem or not.

How Can I Receive A Psychological Evaluation

Contact a medical practitioner, such as a family doctor, psychologist, or psychiatrist, to begin the process of getting a psychological examination. If the assessment falls outside of their area of expertise, you may be directed to another specialist.

Reduces Errors And Improves Overall Quality

The last thing we wanted to develop was a canned report.

Instead, our goal is to help guide psychological practitioners by providing a better way to see the results so that our clinical interpretations are properly formulated. We also thought of different ways where we can each use our own language to make sense of what we see and add our own flare.

Oh, and lets face it, we are all guilty of cutting and pasting reports.

Dont you get embarrassed when you forget to change the name or gender of someone in a report? Also, it is very easy to miss something seemingly minor when it is embedded in a very thick file overflowing with protocol sheets, case notes and other stuff.

As well, we can see where we may need to fill in some gaps with other testing if our results are not consistent.

How Is A Psychological Test Conducted

Psychological tests are administered by trained evaluators. A persons responses are evaluated according to carefully prescribed guidelines. Scores are thought to reflect individual or group differences in the construct the test purports to measure. The science behind psychological testing is psychometrics.

    How Do They Work

A psychological assessment encompasses multiple different components and can be conducted via different methods. The most common methods include:

    • Norm-referenced psychological tests which are standardised tests to assess areas of intelligence, reading, arithmetic, visual-motor skills and behavioural skills.
    • Informal tests and surveys
    • Analysis of school or medical records
    • Medical evaluation
    • Observational data

One of the most common assessment methods used is a clinical interview.

This involves a psychologist speaking to their client about their concerns and issues that they are experiencing. From here, a psychologist may ask about a clients history, observe their mannerisms, including their body language, the way they speak and listen and their interactions with others.

Often, clinical interviews will also be conducted with a clients friends, family, and co-workers to gain a greater understanding of the client themselves. However, this is only conducted with the acknowledgement and consent of the client themselves.

A psychologist may conduct only one, or a multiple of these different psychological assessments to obtain what is needed for a complete assessment.

The tests have been conducted and the observations compiled. For some psychologist practitioners, the most daunting step still awaits: how best to convey the complexities of whats been learned about an individual in a single report.

Developing and honing psychological assessment report writing skills is not easy, says Hadas Pade, PsyD, an assistant professor at Alliant International Universitys California School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco, who co-leads workshops on writing meaningful reports. Report writing is sometimes given short shrift in psychology training programs, she says, which focus more on teaching test administration, scoring and interpretations.

To be useful to a broad mix of potential readerspatients, their families, school officials, other clinicians and even possibly a judgeevery report must focus on quality and clarity, says A. Jordan Wright, PhD, a clinical faculty member at New York University and editor of Essentials of Psychological Assessment Supervision .

That means the report must rest on empirically solid data, synthesized and explained at a level that a nonpsychologist can understand, and answer the central question at handfor instance, Whats underlying the patients problems with attention?
