I honestly wasn’t worried when they said it but the constant “if he is in standard Math, he can catch up” made me second guess whether I was missing some important trajectory or something. Glad I am not crazy. You all made me feel a lot better. thank you!!You arent. Most parents hear standard and automatically think their kid is doomed for life. When the opposite problem is way more concerning – students who are pushed in to advanced classes who dont belong there and then barely scrape by and cant keep up as it gets more challenging. Then theres no place for them to go – they have to take Calculus because theyve taken and passed all the toner classes.

said:In my school district growing up, you had to test into pre-algebra in 7th grade, and standard was to take pre-algebra in 8th grade. The test was administered in 6th grade, or it was based on your standardized test .Only those kids who tested into 7th grade pre-algebra also got to take calculus their senior year and sit for the AP exam. So in my class, there about 15-20 of us who did math together from 7th grade to 12th grade. However, we had a crap ton more kids go to college than just those 15ish of us who took senior calculus. Senior calculus is not the be all end all.Well, that is what I don’t get. Plus can’t they catch up later? I doubled up with Algebra and geometry Granted that was decades ago. In all honesty, he is not looking to go into a field in Math or even a very large school. This is my son who has SM and is very High Anxiety. I think he will do very well, in a small local college that he can come home when needed or feeling stressed/overwhelmed, etc. I just dont know how hard to push this kid.
