Homeschool Math Honors Courses

Thinkwell Algebra 2 Summer Edition

One of the very first things that intrigued me about Thinkwell was that they offered honors courses. Even for the middle school math. The Honors 6th Grade Math moves at a faster pace and is geared toward advanced students who would be preparing to do Algebra their 8th grade year. It still gives them a firm foundation of middle school math, while preparing them for upper level math sooner.

Likewise, they have three different options for Geometry. There is regular Geometry, Honors Geometry and then a Geometry Essentials Course. Honors Geometry covers more topics and has more class days than the normal Geometry course. The Essentials course is geared toward students who have already completed a Geometry course and need a refresher.

Reviews Of Thinkwell Math Courses

Honors Algebra 1 Course with Instructor

Time: 2 yearsI am a home school parent who has used Thinkwell Math for both of my children. My son completed pre-calculus a couple of years ago. I am using Algebra 2 with my daughter this year. I am viewing all the videos and working all the problems with her.Why you liked/didn’t like the book:The Thinkwell Algebra 2 & Pre-calculus are high standard, honors level courses. They are rigorous and thorough for a strong math student. There is not as much integrated review in the course as other courses, such as Saxon. However, the course does an excellent job of explaining the concepts, providing plenty of practice problems, and significant emphasis on word and real-life applications. Any other helpful hints:This is an excellent choice for strong, highly motivated math students. Students can work at their own pace, and proceed through the program at a quicker pace than the course is traditionally covered. Thinkwell offers a “free” two-week trail for all their courses. I would recommend spending some time on the free trial before purchasing. I would not recommend this program for students who struggle with math, and / or students who are not strong independent learners.Shelia StewartReview left December 26, 2010

We Loved Thinkwell Homeschool Math

My girls all loved Thinkwell Homeschool math. Specifically, they loved the teaching style of Professor Edward Burger. Ellawyn told me,

Its like youre not even learning math! He uses songs and things to teach, so then its just fun.

Several times one of my girls would call me over to watch a skit or song that he used. They would even re-tell me things that he did during the lesson that they thought were funny, such as winking when explaining how many times to move the decimal point.

Im not even sure how many times Raena replayed The Top Ten List of Mistakes. She thought his song countdown was great.

This was great because it provided an easy way for her to remember them and she didnt even realize how much she was studying because she was just having fun.

I loved this because it meant that my girls were excited for math. And even though they were all taking challenging courses, they didnt complain because he made the lessons engaging. Because they were having fun, the lessons felt easier.

His use of songs, skits, and props to teach also meant that my children remembered the concepts more easily. What they were learning stuck! It was great listening to them share with each other what Professor Burger did in their lesson. By sharing they were also recounting the math concepts they learned, so I know that they were actually remembering and understanding what they were being taught.

Great teachers lead to great learning. We definitely saw that with Professor Edward Burger.

Where Do You Start Begin With The End In Mind

A good guidepost to navigating your students mathematial journey is to understand where you want your student to be at the end of their course of study. In other words, begin with the end in mind! If your student is college-bound, and you want them to take Calculus before they go to college, then work backwards from the accelerated sequence below to see where you need to be right now.

Unless your student is planning to pursue a science or math-related degree, Calculus doesnt necessarily need to be the terminal course for your high school student.

A typical sequence of secondary math courses completed by a college-bound student is described below.

What Is Thinkwell Homeschool

Thinkwell is a company that looks to support the homeschool community by offering quality level math courses. Their pedagogy is that Learning challenging subjects doesnt have to be hardit just takes the right teacher. They believe that great teaching leads to great learning.

Knowing that each homeschool situation is unique, they offer many different course options and levels. The courses are all online video courses, so you can watch the video and do the work when it is convenient to you.

Classes are also self-paced, allowing your student to work slower or faster depending on their need.

Variety Of Middle School And High School Homeschool Math Courses

Thinkwell offers many online video courses for homeschool students.

6th-8th Grade Math

Middle School math courses include:

  • 6th Grade Math
  • Precalculus Essentials

College Math Courses and Foreign Language

Thinkwell also offers several college level math courses to help better prepare your high school student for college course work. The downside to these courses is that your student is doing all the work of a college-level class, without earning any of the credit.

However, it may be a good opportunity to see the type of work expected at a college level. If they do well enough in the class, theoretically, they should be able to test out of that math and into a higher level math once in college.

In addition, they have Rosetta Stone available for several foreign languages.

What Parents Are Saying

“We absolutely adore the Thinkwell programs, and consider them an essential part of our homeschool classroom. My son completed Algebra I as an eighth-grader, and now has Geometry as a ninth-grader. He has found them to be challenging but very captivating. The instructor is funny and brings the content alive. We loved the Math programs so much, that we purchased the AP Bio class for him this year, as well. He is even more in love with that class… the instructor is also fantastic and humorous. It is a challenging class but it brings out the best of what education should be — fueling the fire to learn more.

Amanda D.

We have used Thinkwells Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry for 3 of our home educated children. We have found the material to be of an upper level, corresponding to honors type classes. The videos are engaging, and there are plenty of opportunities to practice problems. Anytime I have needed to contact tech support the response has been almost immediate.

Tammy P.

“Thinkwell has been fabulous!! Video teaching, plus the worksheets, quizzes, tests and practice tests all provided and graded for you. If you choose to skip anything requiring grades you can do so easily. But if you wanted to, it is a complete stand alone course with printable worksheets, answer keys, grade tracking, a lesson plan outline and tons of videos and links! Not only do I love this but so does my high school daughter.”
