Math Visuals And Models In Fourth Grade

In fourth grade, kids learn to use a lot of math visuals and models to help them understand math. Kids typically see some of this new math, like bar models, in earlier grades. But its everywhere in fourth grade.

For example, for two- and three-digit multiplication problems, kids have to model the answer. They may be asked to use techniques like area models, box multiplication, equal sized groups, and arrays.

The purpose of these visual models is to help kids see how a problem can be solved in multiple ways. And thats great for many students.

But some kids have a harder time with visual information. They may struggle to connect math symbols like;+;and;×;to a visual. And they may not see how these models can help them organize their work.

Simple Strategies For Teaching Math To Kids

  • University of Tennessee
  • Honolulu University

Teaching math to your children is as easy as 1+1=2. Go beyond pencil and paper to make math a learning experience that’s fun for you and your kids. These quick and easy strategies help you teach your kids math and will turn them into mini mathematicians.

Implement Guided Math Stations Into Elementary Instruction

4th Grade Guided Math

My standard elementary math period now starts with a short, whole-group mini-lesson focusing on a fourth-grade skill or concept. The rest of the time students work at different stations, exploring concepts at their own pace and getting exposed to different skills. I float between stations, facilitating mathematical discussion and guiding students through new math concepts.

When I first set up these stations I realized one flaw: all of the stations were digital, and most involved working individually. While I embrace technology in my classroom, students also need time with non-digital media too so they can explore ideas together. Thats where DynaMath perfectly fits into my teaching strategy.

DynaMath gives students a break from digital content, and keeps their attention during independent work. Not only that, it provides them with important reading practice.

More General Lesson Planning Tips:

Another thing to keep in mind as a new 4th-grader teacher is to make time for a daily snack and for brain breaks that allow movement.

In my class, I love GoNoodle because its free, engaging, and has variety.

My 4th graders enjoy the Zumba and Yoga exercises for brain breaks.

With so much movement during centers and brain breaks, your kids will definitely get hungry!

Even though eating and exercising arent an actual part of the lesson youre teaching, I still strongly recommend including a daily snack time and brain break in your lesson plans.

Trust mein my experience as a 4th grade teacherthese two activities boost the mood of my students in a way that makes learning better for everyone.

Use A Team Approach To Develop Leveled Math Teaching

I was tired of teaching to one big group, with everyone working on the same thing at the same time. And if I was feeling this way, Im sure my elementary students were too.

Our team of teachers wanted to provide a more leveled approach to math to better serve every student. After analyzing data, we split the grade into three groups: those students needing extra help, those working on grade level, and those working above grade level . Elementary students could move between groups depending on what was best for them.

I was tasked with teaching the above-level math group. My teaching strategy was to give my students:

  • The foundation of fourth grade math that the curriculum called for
  • A chance to explore concepts above the fourth grade standards

Elementary students read and discuss Scholastic articles during one of their guided math centers.

Fourth Grade Technology Integration

As a new 4th grade teacher, youll want to infuse technology into your activities and instruction to keep students engaged.

My kiddos love using technology because it allows them to transform learning digitally and do so many different things.

Not only can it help students create innovate projects, solve problems, and collaborate, but technology helps students make more real-world connections.

But heres the major caveat: they need LOTS of procedures training and step-by-step instructions to use technology correctly.

Many people assume that if you stick a device in a kids hands, theyll instinctively know how to use it wisely.

Really? I dont know who started that myth, but it does not apply to most 4th graders.

So be sure to plan your technology integration carefully.

Grade 4 Number & Operationsfractions

Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.A.1Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction / by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.A.2Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

Build fractions from unit fractions.

Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions.

Represent and interpret data.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.MD.B.4Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit . Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.

Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measure angles.

Set Up Interactive Exciting Centers In Your Classroom

Having centers, or workstations, in your fourth grade classroom allows students to work independently.

When introducing a new independent activity, I usually do it in small groups first, so when put in the independent stations, they are able to do it without my help. Carol V.

I have center folders that students keep their work in, and at the end of the cycle of centers, I grade the work as 100, 80, or 60 based upon whats done and the quality. I give one center grade for each cycle. Gary F.

Let Kids Make Their Own Multiplication Facts Flashcards

Math 4th Grade Math Posters

Teacher Jen W. recommends this activity. Have students put an artistic drawing to their flashcard answers. so the brain makes a connection between the answer and the drawing, she says. I teach fourth grade, and the kids have been very eager to make the cards at home. They keep them in their binders so that any time we have five minutes to spare, they can practice. They take a lot of pride in them as the cards arent just another set of flashcards.

How I Became A New 4th Grade Teacher

Let me start by saying Welcome to 4th-grade teaching! You have lots of questions, which I completely understand.

After teaching 2nd grade for four years, my K-8 independent school principal asked me to move to upper elementary ELA and SS because the teacher in that role was moving to another state.

I felt excited by the new opportunity, but also very nervous and unsure.

Teaching Strategies For Guided Math

Check out this teachers strategy for using DynaMath with small group instruction

Matthew Carrington

These South Carolina students use Scholastic as part of guided math instruction.

Im a 4th grade teacher at a creative arts elementary school in Charleston, South Carolina. I recently redesigned the way I teach math, and Ive seen wonderful results!

Now, my elementary math class is a dynamic environment where students are challenged to explore new topics, tackle complex concepts, and work together to find solutions. Ive accomplished this by incorporating small group instruction into my daily math blockalso known as guided math. This has led to:

  • More student enthusiasm for math
  • Highly encouraging growth on adaptive tests
  • Excellent achievement on standardized tests

Not only that, I enjoy teaching math again! Heres my teaching strategy.

This is a creative way to teach multiplication facts. Start by drawing the center of a flower and write any number 19 in the middle. Next, draw 12 petals around the center, labeling them 112. Last, draw another 12 petals and write the product of the center number and the petal adjacent to the new petal. To make it easy as an in-home assignment, make a blank template that your students can download at home.

Keep An Eye Out For Math Concepts

How to Teach Collecting Data in Math for Fourth Grade : Math Equations & More

Encourage your child to spot examples of some of the math concepts they are learning about. See how many right angles or right triangles your child can spot. Or have them look for parallel lines, such as train tracks or pillars in a building.

Baking and cooking are among the best ways to familiarize your fourth-grader with how fractions work. Having them help out in the kitchen also reinforces valuable sequencing skills and time management concepts.

Effective Classroom Management Strategies That Work:

  • Build positive teacher-student relationships with simple and consistent activities. For instance, I consistently write individual notes to my students when I notice positive actions or achievements.
  • I also weave Character Education into my weekly activities and routines. For example, The Golden Rule is my main classroom rule. Heres the nitty-gritty on that management approach.
  • Directly teach and model procedures for EVERYTHING! Dont assume that your 4th-grade students will figure out your expectations. My co-teacher calls me The Procedures Queen because I have a procedure for every single transition and activity in my room.
  • Play music for transitions. Not only does this management hack stimulate learning, but it also gives 4th graders a chance to physically move in a fun way.
  • Allow many opportunities for partner work and small group activities. Since 4th graders tend to be very socially driven, they also thrive when given chances to work collaboratively with others. This keeps them engaged and excited to learn. An abundance of individual seatworkespecially when its nothing but worksheetsleads to disengaged 4th graders who will rebel and misbehave because theyre bored!

Since these classroom management tips are general, you may benefit from seeing specific examples from my classes over the years.

Encourage A Positive Attitude Toward Math

Its around fourth grade that many youngsters become discouraged by math and begin to think of it as a subject theyre just not good at. Be aware of this and try to prevent your child from developing a defeatist attitude toward math. Encourage them to stick with it when a problem appears difficult and to approach it in different ways.

Check Homework Three Ways

1. Pick whats most important about the lesson, not the small details, and grade that way. Dont worry about spelling or grammar. The important thing is, did they understand the content? Megan P.

2. For my gradebook, students receive credit for returning homework completed. I go around and mark them off, then I put the answers up and students correct it themselves. I then go over any problems that the students request for me to explain. Montoya M.

3. I have a box of clothespins with each kids name on them. They clip their pin to their homework and drop it into the homework file up front. Its easy to tell who didnt hand in homework because you just take a glance at the remaining clothespins! I set a two-minute timer for them to complete this so it doesnt take too long, and my fourth graders do it in no time! You just have to practice and train them.
