In fourth grade, kids learn to use a lot of math visuals and models to help them understand math. Kids typically see some of this new math, like bar models, in earlier grades. But its everywhere in fourth grade.
For example, for two- and three-digit multiplication problems, kids have to model the answer. They may be asked to use techniques like area models, box multiplication, equal sized groups, and arrays.
The purpose of these visual models is to help kids see how a problem can be solved in multiple ways. And thats great for many students.

Implement Guided Math Stations Into Elementary Instruction
My standard elementary math period now starts with a short, whole-group mini-lesson focusing on a fourth-grade skill or concept. The rest of the time students work at different stations, exploring concepts at their own pace and getting exposed to different skills. I float between stations, facilitating mathematical discussion and guiding students through new math concepts.
When I first set up these stations I realized one flaw: all of the stations were digital, and most involved working individually. While I embrace technology in my classroom, students also need time with non-digital media too so they can explore ideas together. Thats where DynaMath perfectly fits into my teaching strategy.

I was tired of teaching to one big group, with everyone working on the same thing at the same time. And if I was feeling this way, Im sure my elementary students were too.
Our team of teachers wanted to provide a more leveled approach to math to better serve every student. After analyzing data, we split the grade into three groups: those students needing extra help, those working on grade level, and those working above grade level . Elementary students could move between groups depending on what was best for them.

My kiddos love using technology because it allows them to transform learning digitally and do so many different things.

When introducing a new independent activity, I usually do it in small groups first, so when put in the independent stations, they are able to do it without my help. Carol V.

This is a creative way to teach multiplication facts. Start by drawing the center of a flower and write any number 19 in the middle. Next, draw 12 petals around the center, labeling them 112. Last, draw another 12 petals and write the product of the center number and the petal adjacent to the new petal. To make it easy as an in-home assignment, make a blank template that your students can download at home.
Keep An Eye Out For Math Concepts
Encourage your child to spot examples of some of the math concepts they are learning about. See how many right angles or right triangles your child can spot. Or have them look for parallel lines, such as train tracks or pillars in a building.
Baking and cooking are among the best ways to familiarize your fourth-grader with how fractions work. Having them help out in the kitchen also reinforces valuable sequencing skills and time management concepts.

- Build positive teacher-student relationships with simple and consistent activities. For instance, I consistently write individual notes to my students when I notice positive actions or achievements.

- Directly teach and model procedures for EVERYTHING! Dont assume that your 4th-grade students will figure out your expectations. My co-teacher calls me The Procedures Queen because I have a procedure for every single transition and activity in my room.
- Play music for transitions. Not only does this management hack stimulate learning, but it also gives 4th graders a chance to physically move in a fun way.
- Allow many opportunities for partner work and small group activities. Since 4th graders tend to be very socially driven, they also thrive when given chances to work collaboratively with others.
