Checkers Tips & Tricks

Chess on Cool Math Games

Dont hug the sides. Rookie players sometimes rely on the sides of the board for safety, since pieces on the sides cannot be jumped. However, its best to advance your pieces towards the center. It may seem like youre more vulnerable to attacks from this position, but ultimately, claiming the center will give you more mobility.

Save the last row for later. The back row of checkers on either side is called the home row. Its best to keep this row in reserves until you need the pieces most. Keeping your home row occupied will prevent your opponent from making Kings and gives you an opportunity to jump and capture any opposing pieces that come too close.

Focus on the endgame. At the start of the game, you should put all your focus on moving as many pieces as you can to the other side of the board to build a team of Kings. In Checkers, the player with more kinged pieces on the table is the one most likely to win the match, so its best to start early!

Set up a blockade. Your opponent loses when you capture all of their pieces or if they can no longer make any moves. It may be a bit tricky, but as you move your pieces across the board, look for opportunities to create a wall around your opponents checkers. Blocking the enemy will automatically hand you the victory.

Make a trade. If youre ahead in the game, it may be beneficial to sacrifice or trade some of your pieces if it means obtaining more opposing pieces and advancing further across the board.

What You Learn From Playing Checkers

Playing Checkers teaches basic spatial awareness and boosts problem solving skills and memory recall.

The goal of Checkers, or “Draughts” is to remove all your opponent’s pieces from the board. Use your mouse to move your pieces around the board. Your pieces can only move forward one tile diagonally .

To capture an opponent’s piece and remove it from the board, you need to “jump” over their piece with one of yours. If after jumping, your piece could make another jump, it is allowed to make additional jumps. If one of your pieces gets to the opposite side of the board , it will turn into a King. Kings can move and jump diagonally in any direction. They can even combine jumps forward and backward on the same turn!

You win by removing all of your opponent’s pieces from the board, or if your opponent can’t make a move.

How To Do En Passant In Chess

Chess Games On Cool Math Games

The last rule about pawns is called en passant, which is French for in passing. If a pawn moves out two squares on its first move, and by doing so lands to the side of an opponent’s pawn , that other pawn has the option of capturing the first pawn as it passes by.

This special move must be done immediately after the first pawn has moved past, otherwise the option to capture it is no longer available. Click through the example below to better understand this odd, but important rule.

    How To Checkmate In Chess

The purpose of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king. This happens when the king is put into check and cannot get out of check.

There are only three ways a king can get out of check:

    • move out of the way
    • block the check with another piece or
    • capture the piece threatening the king.

If a king cannot escape checkmate then the game is over. Customarily the king is not captured or removed from the board, the game is simply declared over.

Checkmate can happen in the early stages of the game if one of the players does not act carefully. Below, you will find an example of the Fools mate, a checkmate that happens in just 2 moves.

  • 1Think about the entire game from the opening moves on. A game of chess is generally considered to have three stages, all of which are deeply linked. The best chess players are always 10-12 moves ahead in their brains, developing 3-4 strategies simultaneously depending on their opponent’s moves. They know that moves and pieces traded in the early stages will profoundly affect the game’s end, and they plan accordingly.
  • Opening: This is where you set the tone of the game. Your first 4-5 moves develop a lot of pieces quickly and begin fighting for the board’s center. You can go offensive, taking the fight to them, or defensive, holding back and waiting for them to make the first move.
  • The Middlegame: This exists purely to set up your endgame. You trade pieces, seize control of the middle of the board and set up 1-2 lines of attack that you can spring into motion at any time. A trade-off now may be beneficial, but you have to know how losing a piece affects your chances to win at the end.
  • Endgame: There are only a few pieces left, and they are all incredibly valuable. The endgame seems like it is the most dramatic stage, but really most of the work has already been doneâthe player who “won” the middlegame and ended up with the best material should wrap it up with a checkmate.
  • When behind in material, exchange pawns and go for a draw.
  • Threefold Repetition: If the same position has repeated itself three times, a player can claim a draw.
  • Just two kings on the board.

How To Move The Pawn In Chess

Pawns are unusual because they move and capture in different ways: they move forward but capture diagonally. Pawns can only move forward one square at a time, except for their very first move where they can move forward two squares.

Pawns can only capture one square diagonally in front of them. They can never move or capture backward. If there is another piece directly in front of a pawn he cannot move past or capture that piece.

How To Play With Chess Tournament Rules

Many tournaments follow a set of common, similar rules. These rules do not necessarily apply to play at home or online, but you may want to practice with them anyway.

    • Touch-move – If a player touches one of their own pieces they must move that piece as long as it is a legal move. If a player touches an opponent’s piece, they must capture that piece. A player who wishes to touch a piece only to adjust it on the board must first announce the intention, usually by saying adjust.
    • Clocks and Timers – Most tournaments use timers to regulate the time spent on each game, not on each move. Each player gets the same amount of time to use for their entire game and can decide how to spend that time. Once a player makes a move they then touch a button or hit a lever to start the opponent’s clock. If a player runs out of time and the opponent calls the time, then the player who ran out of time loses the game .

    Don’t Give Pieces Away

Don’t carelessly lose your pieces! Each piece is valuable and you can’t win a game without pieces to checkmate. There is an easy system that most players use to keep track of the relative value of each chess piece. How much are the chess pieces worth?

    • A pawn is worth 1
    • A knight is worth 3
    • A bishop is worth 3
    • A rook is worth 5
    • A queen is worth 9
    • The king is infinitely valuable

At the end of the game, these points don’t mean anythingit is simply a system you can use to make decisions while playing, helping you know when to capture, exchange, or make other moves.

ABOUT CHESSChess is one of the oldest board games. To play it, they use an 8X8 board, drawn into black and white squares, and a set of figures 16 white and 16 black. Players have 8 pawns each, a pair of horses, bishops and rooks, as well as a king and a queen . The goal is to checkmate the opponents king or ensure that he surrenders himself. With the development of computers, authors of computer toys could not ignore this ancient game. How To Castle In Chess

One other special chess rule is called castling. This move allows you to do two important things all in one move: get your king to safety , and get your rook out of the corner and into the game. On a player’s turn he may move his king two squares over to one side and then move the rook from that side’s corner to right next to the king on the opposite side. However, in order to castle, the following conditions must be met:

    • it must be that king’s very first move
    • it must be that rook’s very first move
    • there cannot be any pieces between the king and rook to move
    • the king may not be in check or pass through check

Notice that when you castle one direction the king is closer to the side of the board. That is called castling “kingside“. Castling to the other side, through where the queen sat, is called castling “queenside“. Regardless of which side, the king always moves only two squares when castling.

How To Move The Queen In Chess

The queen is the most powerful piece. She can move in any one straight direction – forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally – as far as possible as long as she does not move through any of her own pieces.

And, like with all pieces, if the queen captures an opponent’s piece her move is over. Notice how the white queen captures the black queen and then the black king is forced to move.
