Training Needed For A Psychologist
Degree: Training consists of 5 years of academic training at a university, with an internship of 12 months at an accredited institution. The basic minimum qualification for registration as a psychologist is a Masters degree in Research Psychology/Clinical Psychology/ Educational Psychology/Industrial Psychology and Counselling Psychology. Firstly, a B-degree must be obtained with psychology as a major subject e.g. UJ, NWU, UCT, NMMU, UL, UNISA, US, UFS, UP, UV, UKZN, Wits.
Post-graduate study:
After completing this degree the prospective psychologist must apply for selection for a Masters degree in one of the five fields: clinical, counselling, educational, industrial or research psychology. The selection is a very intensive process and only a limited number of students are selected.
Masters degree in Psychology: The duration of this degree is 2 years. The first year is predominantly theoretical but includes supervised practical work. In the second year an internship has to be done under the supervision of a registered psychologist. A short thesis must also be written.
Registration: After complying with all the requirements for the Masters degree and successfully completing the internship, the prospective psychologist has to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa in one of the five recognised categories of clinical, counselling, educational, industrial or research psychology.

What does your job involve? I provide therapy to clients who experience difficulties or worries. It involves listening and reflecting to clients in a safe environment. Some psychologists work for hospitals, schools or businesses. I run a private practice, where I see clients for therapy on a weekly basis, either for a short or longer period. I also work for an organisation, where I offer mentoring and support to the staff.
Why did you choose psychology? As a former teacher I became aware that labelling children/people is not constructive. I studied further to understand the rationale for behaviour and develop insight into human functioning and dysfunctionality. I have to admit that I also chose this profession to develop further insight into myself.
What training did you undergo? After completing an undergrad degree, which included a major in psychology, I studied my Honours in Psychology part-time through UNISA. My Masters in Clinical Psychology at UCT, which I got into after a tough selection process, took two years full-time. This included practical training, course work, a years internship at a hospital and the completion of a thesis. Plus, I completed a year of community service before beginning private work.

I have lectured Psychology Honours students for seven years, which means that at this time of year, Im inundated with requests for referee reports for Psychology Masters applications! There is much mystery surrounding the selection process. Who will be selected? What is the interview process like? What if I dont get in?
Most students are engrained to believe that Masters selection would be close to impossible! I remember visiting the admissions department at Stellenbosch University in my Matric year. I was encouraged to register for a B.A. Social Work for a number of reasons, but particularly because selection for Masters is unlikely. Im all for being rational and realistic, but I remember the disappointment that day. I also remember my first week at Varsity: So, what are you studying? Well, Im studying Social Work but I want to be a Psychologist!
In South Africa, to register as a Psychologist you need a Masters Degree. If you go the Clinical route, you need to complete a community service year before you can register for independent practice. Masters takes two years to complete . According to my experience, the first year is a combination of theory and practical experience. The second year is a full-time internship. During these two years you need to complete your thesis.
Many students ask my advice on how to improve their chances of getting selected. While I have never been involved in the selection process as a lecturer, these are some suggestions:
